Texas Instruments’ DLPC8445 is a compact DLP display controller for projector makers—not a complete projector. In a 4K UHD design, it works with a matched micromirror device such as the DLP472TP and a compatible power-management IC such as the DLPA3085. That chipset supports 4K UHD at up to 60Hz; its listed 240Hz mode is for 1080p/WUXGA, not 4K.
What TI introduced
The DLPC8445 is the controller at the center of TI’s compact-projector announcement. TI currently lists it as active and identifies it for use with the DLP472TP and DLP391TP DMDs. The controller must be paired with the appropriate DMD and compatible power-management components; these parts are not arbitrary substitutes. TI’s DLPC8445 product page lists DLPA3085 and DLPA3082 for relevant configurations.
The controller family also includes DLPC8445V and DLPC8455, which are distinct variants with different compatibility and feature considerations. A related controller, DLPC8545, is also listed for DLP472TP; designers should compare exact system requirements rather than assume any of these devices is a drop-in replacement.

How the three-part chipset works

The DLPC8445 accepts video through one V-by-One HS input, configurable for one, two, four or eight lanes. TI lists up to a 600MHz pixel clock and up to 3.0Gbps per input transmission rate. The controller also provides image processing and timing functions, including warping and keystone-related processing, variable refresh rate (VRR), DynamicBlack, frame-rate multiplication, degamma, color adjustment and 3D support. Its interfaces include an internal Arm processor, 52 configurable GPIOs, USB 2.0 high-speed, SPI, I²C, UART and JTAG. These capabilities make it a system component for an OEM design, not a standalone graphics processor or projector.

The DLPA3085 supports RGB LED driving, DMD high-voltage supply generation, two buck converters for controller and DMD supplies, an additional programmable buck converter, two LDOs, and protection and sequencing functions. TI describes LED capability up to 16A per LED, or up to 32A for series LEDs, subject to implementation and operating conditions. Laser-phosphor designs may need different supporting components; TI identifies the DLPA100 motor driver for applicable systems. See the DLPA3085 product page for its device-level specifications.
What “4K UHD” means for the DLP472TP
The DLP472TP’s physical micromirror array is 1,920 × 1,080, or about 2.07 million mirrors. TI specifies it as a 4K UHD system component because DLP projection systems use optical and temporal pixel-shifting techniques to produce a displayed 3,840 × 2,160 image. It is therefore important to distinguish the mirror-array resolution from the system’s displayed resolution: this is not a native 3,840 × 2,160 mirror array.

TI lists the DMD as a 0.47-inch diagonal device with 5.4µm mirror pitch and ±17° mirror tilt. It also lists 4K UHD at 60Hz, 1080p up to 240Hz and maximum system brightness of 1,800 lumens. That brightness figure is a system-level maximum specification, not a promise that every retail projector using the DMD will deliver 1,800 ANSI lumens. The DLP472TP product page also gives an operating-temperature range of 0°C to 70°C; the DLPC8445’s listed range is −30°C to 85°C.
4K at 60Hz and high refresh at lower resolution

These are different operating modes. The cited DLPC8445 specifications do not support describing this chipset as 4K at 240Hz: 240Hz applies to 1080p/WUXGA operation. For a gaming projector, 4K/60Hz may suit many console and home-cinema uses, while the lower-resolution high-refresh mode targets situations where motion and response rate matter more than pixel count.

Why the smaller controller matters—and what it does not mean
The DLPC8445 is housed in a 9mm × 9mm, 484-pin FCCSP package, an area of 81mm². GamesBeat reported TI’s claim that the controller is about 90% smaller than the previous generation. That comparison refers to the controller, not the finished projector, and is an attributed manufacturer claim rather than an independently established industry-wide ranking. GamesBeat’s 2024 report, updated in 2025, also describes TI’s broader positioning around size, speed and power.
A smaller controller can free circuit-board area for power, connectivity, memory or thermal components and give designers more room to build compact electronics. It does not make the projector 90% smaller: the lens, light source, cooling system, battery, speakers, input board and enclosure may occupy far more volume than the controller. Nor does a compact package by itself establish lower system power, brightness, noise or battery life.

What VRR and the latency claim mean for gaming
TI describes the DLPC8445 as its first DLP display controller with VRR. Variable refresh rate lets display timing follow a variable-rate source, helping reduce tearing and stutter as frame delivery changes. Its usefulness in a finished projector depends on the source, input chain, firmware and the modes the manufacturer enables.

This is a qualified controller/display-path measurement, not a measurement of the complete trip from a gamepad action to visible pixels. Input conversion, scaling, HDR processing, keystone correction, frame interpolation and other upstream processing can add latency. What a portable projector still has to solve
A small controller can help make a compact design possible, but portability is a system-level engineering problem. Designers still have to balance:
- Battery and power: energy capacity, illumination efficiency and brightness while running on battery.
- Thermals and noise: heat removal, fan or heatsink size, safe operation and acoustic performance.
- Optics: lens size, focus uniformity, alignment and the mechanical mounting of the DMD.
- Image quality: contrast, black level, color gamut, white point, HDR behavior and potential color-sequential rainbow artifacts.
- Image geometry: warping and keystone correction can help placement, but digital correction may reduce usable resolution.
- Durability: dust control and protection of the optical path and components.
TI presents reduced board size and power as enabling factors for mobile projector designs, not a guarantee that a particular finished projector will be battery-powered or small. Projector brightness, image quality and operating noise depend on the complete optical, electrical and mechanical implementation.
Availability and who can use the parts
The DLPC8445 is an OEM design-in component, not a consumer upgrade for an existing projector. Using it requires a compatible DMD and PMIC as well as an optical engine, illumination source, board design, firmware and mechanical and thermal engineering. TI’s product page showed the DLPC8445AMD as out of stock and with no public price displayed when checked on August 18, 2026; that is a dated availability signal, so consult TI for current ordering status.

TI’s present part-detail page did not display a public price. Design teams can start with the DLPC8445 product page and its linked documentation, while verifying that each evaluation board or tool explicitly supports the intended controller and DMD combination. TI’s DLP472NEEVM listing is a tool reference, not proof that it is an evaluation platform for the DLPC8445/DLP472TP chipset.

Choosing among related TI parts
DLPC8445V, DLPC8455 and DLPC8545 should be assessed against the exact DMD, illumination architecture, refresh modes, firmware and PMIC requirements. TI identifies the DLPC8455 for different DMD families, while DLPC8445V is a related variant with its own feature and compatibility details. The DLPC8545 is another controller listed for DLP472TP, but similarity of DMD alone does not establish interchangeability. For an engineering decision, compare the product documentation and design resources rather than selecting by family name.
