It isn’t replacing you. The 2025 Volvo EX90 can receive software updates, use driver-assistance features to handle some routine inputs, and monitor whether you appear distracted or drowsy. But Volvo’s own manual keeps responsibility with the driver: Pilot Assist and related systems require supervision, and the EX90 is not an unsupervised self-driving car.
“Learning” describes several different things here: updates to the vehicle, Volvo’s use of real-world data to develop safety software, and the EX90’s monitoring of the person behind the wheel. None means the car independently learns to drive itself or can take over your judgment.
What “learning” means in the EX90
Volvo designed the EX90 as a software-defined electric SUV: its central computers run functions that can be revised or expanded after the vehicle is built. Some changes arrive over the air; others require a workshop visit. Volvo’s U.S. software release notes document updates to driver assistance, parking, charging, connectivity, and other vehicle functions.
There are three distinct ideas behind the “learning” language:

- The vehicle changes through updates. Volvo can issue software that adjusts or adds functions. That is not the car spontaneously rewriting its driving rules; updates are developed and released by the manufacturer.
- Volvo can use real-world data in development. The company describes using driving data and AI as part of its safety-development work. Fleet data can help engineers refine and validate systems. It does not mean an individual EX90 autonomously trains itself on every trip and then assumes control. See Volvo’s safety-technology overview.
- The car monitors the driver. Driver Understanding uses interior sensors and cameras to look for signs such as distraction or drowsiness. That is an estimate of the driver’s condition, not a system for learning the owner’s habits well enough to replace them.
Personalization is another separate matter: a supported phone or profile can make some settings more convenient, but it does not transfer driving responsibility to the vehicle.
The hardware behind the promise
The EX90’s sensing architecture includes roof-mounted lidar, cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and interior driver-monitoring sensors, with onboard computing and Volvo software combining information about the vehicle and its surroundings. Volvo has described this hardware as a foundation for future safety and automated-driving development.
It helps to separate three steps: sensing what is nearby, interpreting that information in software, and being approved and capable of controlling the vehicle without a supervising driver. A sensor supports the first step; it does not by itself prove the third.

That distinction matters particularly for lidar. Early production road tests by Cars.com and Ars Technica reported that the system was initially collecting data rather than delivering the full driver-assistance integration suggested by the launch narrative. Those reports describe vehicles and software at the time of testing; they do not establish the status of every EX90 today. Check the vehicle’s software, market specification, and Volvo documentation rather than inferring a capability from the presence of lidar.
What it can do—and what you still have to do
The EX90 offers a suite of driver-assistance and safety functions. Exact availability can vary by market, equipment, and software version, so the owner’s manual and the functions shown on a particular vehicle should take precedence over a general feature list.

Volvo describes Driver Understanding as capable of escalating warnings and, in an emergency where the driver cannot continue, initiating a controlled stop and seeking help. The precise sequence and conditions matter: this is a contingency for a driver who may be incapacitated, not a promise that the EX90 can safely complete a journey alone. Consult the Emergency Stop Assist support information and the manual for the applicable vehicle.

No: this is not unsupervised autonomous driving
Volvo originally described the EX90 as hardware-ready for future unsupervised driving. Read “hardware-ready” as an architectural intention, not an available feature. It does not mean that the 2025 EX90 can take you to a destination while you stop supervising, nor that lidar makes it Level 3 or Level 4 automation.

Heavy rain, fog, snow, glare, dirty or blocked sensors, faded lane markings, construction zones, and unpredictable traffic can all challenge assistance systems. Lidar does not remove those limits.
How the EX90 has changed through updates
Volvo’s U.S. release notes show that “improving over time” has so far meant a series of defined software changes, not a vehicle gradually teaching itself to drive:

- February 10, 2025 — software 1.2.6: added wireless Apple CarPlay and listed improvements to hands-off detection, Pilot Assist graphics, forward-collision warnings, stability, and charging. Volvo listed this release as workshop-only.
- June 16, 2025 — software 1.3.17: added Curve Speed Assist and Smart Charging, and listed changes to Pilot Assist information, digital-key reliability, connectivity, and charging stability.
- November 3, 2025 — software 1.4.15: primarily listed general stability improvements.
- 2026 workshop releases: Volvo’s notes describe updates associated with a core-computer hardware change, alongside improvements to features including Pilot Assist, Driver Alert, Park Pilot Assist, Connected Safety, charging, menus, and lighting.
Release timing and function availability can differ by market, model year, vehicle specification, and installed software. OTA delivery is not universal: some changes require an authorized workshop.

Volvo says eligible 2025 EX90s can receive a complimentary core-computer upgrade at an authorized U.S. workshop during 2026. The upgrade installs a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based computer. Volvo’s support material says newer software that needs the additional processing capacity is not compatible with the original computer.

That is a meaningful qualification to the promise of a vehicle that improves after purchase. Software can add or refine functions only within the limits of the vehicle’s hardware. In this case, at least some future software requires a physical computer change and a service appointment, not simply an overnight download. The upgrade may provide the computing foundation Volvo wants for newer software, but it does not guarantee a particular future autonomous-driving feature. Verify what is actually enabled on the vehicle rather than treating a hardware upgrade as proof of a promised capability.
What early ownership reports say about software risk
Software updates can improve a vehicle, but they also make software maturity part of ordinary ownership. Consumer Reports’ 2025 road-test report described repeated updates and resets on its test vehicle, with issues including radio and charging problems and blank screens. It also criticized the reliance on the touchscreen for frequently used controls. These are reports about its test experience, not proof that every EX90 has the same faults.
Cars.com and Ars Technica likewise reported missing or delayed features in early vehicles. Taken together, the reports illustrate the trade-off: tightly integrated software can be updated, but bugs, changing controls, service visits, and differences between versions can affect everyday use. A 2025 EX90 that has received a later update or computer upgrade may not behave exactly like an early test vehicle.

If you are considering a used 2025 EX90—or checking the status of one you own—ask a Volvo retailer to confirm the details for that specific VIN:
- Model year and market: specifications and feature availability can differ.
- Installed software version: compare it with Volvo’s current release notes for your market.
- Core-computer upgrade: ask whether the dual Orin upgrade has been completed, whether the vehicle is eligible, and whether a workshop appointment remains necessary.
- Active functions: confirm which assistance features are actually enabled on that vehicle rather than assuming all announced or hardware-supported functions are available.
- Service history: check for outstanding service campaigns, software-related repairs, or unresolved faults.
- Owner’s manual: read the current instructions for Pilot Assist, driver monitoring, sensor limits, and emergency functions.
The EX90 may suit buyers who value a large electric SUV, extensive driver monitoring, and the prospect of software improvements. It is a poor fit for someone seeking a hands-off autonomous car today, who dislikes screen-centered controls, or who expects the vehicle’s features and behavior to remain fixed after purchase. The honest description is a sophisticated driver-assistance vehicle designed to evolve—not a car that has learned to replace its driver.
