In January 2023, shortly after ElevenLabs launched its beta voice-generation platform, some 4chan users reportedly used it to make realistic-sounding fake audio of public figures saying abusive or extremist things. One widely reported example falsely portrayed Emma Watson reading Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. The episode was user misuse of a publicly available tool—not evidence that ElevenLabs had been hacked—and it exposed how quickly realistic synthetic speech could be turned into harassment and deception.
What the beta tool could do
ElevenLabs introduced its voice-AI platform in January 2023, promoting lifelike speech generation and tools for creating or adapting voices. The terms “voice AI” and “voice cloning” can describe different processes:
- Text-to-speech turns written text into spoken audio, using an existing or generated voice.
- Voice cloning creates a model intended to approximate a particular person’s vocal identity from audio samples.
- Voice conversion transforms a spoken performance so it resembles another voice while retaining aspects of the original delivery.
These capabilities can support narration, accessibility, dubbing and other legitimate work. But a convincing voice imitation can also make invented words appear to come from a real person. The 2023 reporting described users supplying audio samples and generating speech from typed text; it does not establish that every clip circulating in the controversy was made in the same way or with the same feature.

What some users reportedly generated
Contemporary reports described fake celebrity and public-figure audio containing racist, transphobic, extremist, threatening or otherwise abusive material. The Emma Watson clip reading Mein Kampf became the most widely cited example. Coverage also discussed voices associated with people including Joe Rogan, Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates.
These were fabricated recordings, not statements those people made. The evidence in the coverage concerned particular posts and examples shared by users. It does not show that all 4chan users took part, and the forum’s anonymous, fast-moving format makes the overall scale difficult to measure.

Reports from VICE, the Associated Press and the OECD incident record documented the controversy and examples. There is no need to reproduce the abusive audio or its language to understand the harm.

Older text-to-speech often sounded conspicuously synthetic. The new generation of voice tools could produce speech that sounded much more natural, and a short audio clip was easy to share without the video-editing work associated with visual deepfakes. That combination made fabricated statements plausible enough to confuse or distress listeners.

The potential harm went beyond shock value:
- Harassment and reputational damage: A target can be made to appear to say hateful, sexual or threatening things.
- Defamation and misinformation: Listeners may mistake invented speech for an authentic recording.
- Fraud: Voice impersonation can be used in phone scams or social-engineering attempts.
- Political deception: Fake audio can falsely attribute claims to candidates or public officials.
- Consent and compensation: A recognizable vocal identity may be imitated or commercialized without permission or a license.
- Evidence and trust: As synthetic audio becomes easier to make, journalists, investigators and courts face greater difficulty assessing recordings—and real recordings may be wrongly dismissed as fake.
A Recorded Future report later examined deepfake-voice misuse and described risks including fraud, impersonation, harassment and reputational damage. Voice impersonation fraud predates the 4chan episode; the incident did not mark its beginning. It did show how a general-purpose creative tool could be repurposed quickly for harmful uses.
It was misuse, not a reported breach
The available reporting does not indicate that ElevenLabs’ systems were hacked or that company data was breached. The issue was users reportedly abusing an accessible generation tool, alongside questions about whether its early safeguards were adequate. Calling the event a hack or data breach would misstate the evidence.

How ElevenLabs responded—and what its current safeguards claim
After users circulated abusive examples, ElevenLabs acknowledged increased misuse concerns and moved toward additional restrictions and verification. That response unfolded after the January 2023 beta launch; it would be inaccurate to imply that all the controls described today were already in place at launch.

In its current safety materials, ElevenLabs says it uses a layered approach that includes restrictions on celebrity and other high-risk voices, consent and rights checks for voice cloning, identity or other verification for its Professional Voice Cloning feature, monitoring, enforcement against violating accounts and voices, abuse reporting, and tools intended to help identify or trace generated audio. It also offers an AI Speech Classifier and describes provenance-related efforts including C2PA. See the company’s safety overview, use policy, voice-cloning documentation and no-go voices guidance.

Those are descriptions of the provider’s policies and systems, not independent proof that abuse is impossible or that every safeguard works in every case. Restrictions and monitoring can deter or reduce misuse, but cannot eliminate it. ElevenLabs says its classifier can help determine whether audio was generated using its service; a result does not establish whether a person said something, and a clip made with another provider may not be detected by that tool. Audio can also be edited, compressed or re-recorded, which may complicate analysis.
How to assess a suspicious voice clip
- Do not treat realism as proof. Natural-sounding audio can be synthetic; an audio clip alone may not establish who spoke.
- Find the original context. Look for the earliest available upload, its date and surrounding material. A repost without context is weak evidence.
- Seek independent corroboration. Check reputable reporting and whether the supposed speaker or verified representatives have addressed the recording.
- Use detectors cautiously. A classifier can offer a clue about likely provenance, not a definitive verdict about authenticity. A tool designed to identify one provider’s output cannot rule out synthetic audio from elsewhere.
- Verify consequential requests another way. If a voice message demands money, passwords, political action or secrecy, contact the person through a separate, trusted channel before acting.
Comparison with known recordings may help raise questions, but it is not conclusive: people vary how they speak, and edited audio can mislead. Likewise, an audio file may contain a real person’s voice but still be spliced or altered. Synthetic-audio detection should inform verification, not replace it.
The broader lesson
The 2023 controversy was an early, visible warning about the gap between making voice generation widely useful and preventing its misuse. Responsible deployment cannot depend only on users behaving well after release: access controls, consent checks, reporting and enforcement, provenance measures and independent verification all matter. None is a complete solution on its own—and a recognizable voice being available online is not the same as permission to imitate it.
