Short answer: the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and the Language Server Protocol (LSP) connect different sides of a developer workflow. LSP standardizes messages between an editor or IDE and a language server that provides features such as auto complete, go to definition, find all references, and documentation on hover. MCP standardizes how an AI application connects to servers that expose tools, resources, and prompts. An MCP server can optionally act as an adapter to an LSP server, but neither protocol requires that bridge.

The two protocols solve different connection problems

Microsoft describes LSP this way: “The idea behind the Language Server Protocol (LSP) is to standardize the protocol for how such servers and development tools communicate.” An editor sends JSON-RPC messages to a language server, which understands a language and analyzes the workspace. The editor can therefore reuse the same server implementation across products.

MCP places an AI application at the other end of a connection. Its host manages MCP clients, which discover server capabilities and invoke them during an AI workflow. An MCP server may publish callable tools, read-only resources, and reusable prompts. MCP also uses a JSON-RPC data layer, with a separate transport layer for carrying messages.

Where an MCP-to-LSP language server fits

A bridge is an implementation pattern, not a mandatory MCP feature. The adapter can start or connect to a language server as an LSP client, expose selected operations as MCP tools, and translate the results back to the AI host.

AI host / model
      │ MCP client: discovery, tool calls, resources, prompts
      ▼
MCP server or adapter
      │ LSP client: editor-style language requests (optional)
      ▼
Language server
      │
      └── source workspace and language analysis

Editor or IDE ───────────── LSP ─────────────► Language server

The upper path is optional. A normal MCP server might instead query a database, call an API, or read project documentation without using LSP. Conversely, an LSP server does not automatically become an AI tool provider.

What the adapter must decide

  • Which languages and LSP methods are supported.
  • How a workspace root and file access are selected.
  • Whether the AI may only read results or may request edits.
  • How diagnostics, locations, symbols, and markdown documentation are represented as tool output.
  • How server startup, shutdown, crashes, and multiple workspaces are handled.

Those details belong to the bridge’s documentation. The MCP and LSP specifications do not define a universal method mapping such as “one MCP tool for every LSP request.”

What happens during an MCP tool call

  1. Connect: the host launches or connects to an MCP server over a supported transport.
  2. Negotiate: protocol-version and capability information are exchanged.
  3. Discover: the client requests available tools with tools/list. The server returns names, descriptions, and input schemas.
  4. Select: the model or host chooses a tool that fits the user’s request.
  5. Validate: the server checks the JSON-RPC request and its arguments. The official TypeScript SDK validates a registered tool’s input schema before the handler runs.
  6. Execute: the handler performs the operation. In an LSP adapter, it may translate the call into an LSP request such as a completion or definition query.
  7. Return: the server translates the result into MCP content for the host, which decides how to show or use it.

The MCP base protocol describes request/response and notification patterns. Its request-level design carries the information needed to process a message; do not confuse that with the lifetime of a long-running stdio process or HTTP connection, which may still retain implementation state such as an open workspace.

A minimal MCP server that exposes language information

The MCP TypeScript SDK v2 provides one implementation route. This example exposes a read-only tool that reports symbols supplied by an application-specific analysis function. A real LSP adapter would replace the placeholder with an LSP client request and format the returned symbols.

import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js";
import { z } from "zod";

const server = new McpServer({ name: "workspace-language-tools", version: "1.0.0" });

server.registerTool(
  "find_symbols",
  {
    description: "Find symbols in a workspace file",
    inputSchema: {
      file: z.string().min(1),
      query: z.string().min(1)
    }
  },
  async ({ file, query }) => {
    // An LSP adapter would call workspace/symbol or textDocument/documentSymbol here.
    return {
      content: [{
        type: "text",
        text: `Search ${query} in ${file}; connect this handler to your LSP client.`
      }]
    };
  }
);

const transport = new StdioServerTransport();
await server.connect(transport);

Install the SDK and Zod according to the MCP TypeScript SDK v2 documentation. The SDK’s use of stdio is an example, not a protocol requirement; an implementation can use another supported transport. Keep protocol logic, LSP process management, and authorization separate so a malformed tool argument cannot become an arbitrary language-server command.

Mapping common LSP features into useful MCP tools

User intent LSP-side operation Possible MCP presentation
Complete this expression Completion request at a document position complete tool returning labels, kinds, and insertion text
Where is this declared? Definition request go_to_definition returning file URIs and ranges
What uses this symbol? References request find_references returning locations with workspace-relative paths
Explain the symbol Hover request hover returning markdown documentation and a range
What is wrong? Diagnostics published by the language server A resource or tool result containing severity, code, message, and range

A bridge should normalize file URIs, line and character indexing, cancellation, and partial results. It should also make workspace boundaries explicit: an AI tool that can read every path on a machine has a very different risk profile from one restricted to a checked-out project.

Using an MCP server in VS Code

VS Code documents both local command-based servers and remote HTTP servers, with workspace-level and user-profile configuration. Labels and configuration syntax are VS Code-specific; other MCP clients may support different transports or settings.

Local command server

Open the Command Palette and choose MCP: Add Server, then select a command-based server and enter its executable and arguments. Choose whether to save it to the workspace or your user profile. A workspace entry can be shared with a project; a user entry applies across workspaces. You can also edit the generated MCP configuration file directly using the format shown in the VS Code guide.

Remote HTTP server

Choose the HTTP option in the same command, provide the server URL, and complete any authentication the server requires. Do not assume that an HTTP server has the same capabilities as a local stdio server; inspect the client’s discovered tools and resources.

Inspecting and stopping a server

Use the MCP view or Command Palette actions to start, stop, and manage servers, and open server output when a connection fails. The output normally reveals an invalid command, missing dependency, authentication failure, or protocol negotiation error.

Security and trust boundaries

A local MCP server executes with the permissions granted to its process. VS Code warns that local servers can run arbitrary code and recommends reviewing the publisher and configuration. Its documentation (dated September 16, 2026) describes sandboxing for local stdio servers on macOS and Linux, with configured filesystem and network access; that sandboxing is not available on Windows. Treat this as a VS Code implementation detail, not a guarantee made by MCP itself.

  • Review every executable, argument, environment variable, and working directory.
  • Restrict the workspace and network access where the client supports it.
  • Expose read-only language tools unless an explicit edit workflow is required.
  • Validate paths and document identifiers before passing them to an LSP process.
  • Log tool names and outcomes without recording secrets or whole source files.

Versions and compatibility

The MCP base-protocol source cited here is revision 2026-07-28. Microsoft’s LSP overview currently identifies LSP 3.18 as the latest specification. Both are moving targets: verify the revision, SDK version, and client support when you deploy. A client may support tools but not resources or prompts, or may expose those capabilities with different UI and configuration.

Troubleshooting an MCP-LSP integration

The server never appears in the client

Check the executable path, JSON configuration syntax, working directory, and whether the process writes protocol messages to stdout instead of logs. Put diagnostic logging on stderr for stdio transports, then restart the client and inspect server output.

Discovery succeeds but a tool call is rejected

Compare the arguments with the schema returned by tools/list. Required fields, URI formats, and zero-based line/character positions are frequent causes. Make the handler return a structured error rather than silently converting an invalid path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The LSP server starts but returns no definitions or completions

Confirm that the adapter sent an initialized LSP handshake, opened the document with the correct language identifier and text, and used the correct workspace root. Check that the language server’s runtime and project dependencies are installed.

Results are stale or the process crashes

Forward document-change notifications, serialize requests when the language server requires it, and implement cancellation and restart logic. Keep the MCP connection error distinct from an LSP diagnostic: a valid “no results” response is not the same as a transport failure.

The AI can read files it should not see

Enforce workspace roots and allowlists in the MCP handler, not only in the prompt. Review client sandbox settings and run the server under a least-privilege account where practical.

FAQ

Does every MCP server use an LSP server underneath?

No. LSP is only relevant when an implementation chooses to obtain language intelligence through a language server. Many MCP servers provide unrelated tools, resources, or prompts.

Can an editor consume MCP tools as if they were native LSP features?

Only through editor-specific integration or an adapter. LSP defines the editor-language-server relationship; MCP does not define how an editor must render an MCP tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a JSON-RPC message automatically compatible between MCP and LSP?

No. Both use JSON-RPC structures, but methods, parameters, capabilities, lifecycle rules, and result models differ. Translation is still required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which protocol should I implement first for an AI coding feature?

Implement MCP when the feature must be discovered and called by an AI host. Implement LSP when it must integrate with editor language features. Build a bridge only when both clients are required.

Where should protocol-version checks live?

Perform MCP initialization and capability checks at connection time, and perform the LSP initialize/initialized handshake for each language-server process. Keep the two negotiations separate.

Can the bridge safely allow edits?

It can, but write tools need explicit authorization, path restrictions, conflict handling, and an audit trail. Start with read-only operations such as hover, definitions, references, and diagnostics.
