Plan for roughly 15–60 minutes for a small update within Sequoia, or 1–2 hours or more to upgrade an older macOS installation to Sequoia. These are practical planning ranges, not Apple guarantees. A slow download, busy Apple servers, limited storage, or an older Mac can extend the wait, and a progress bar that pauses is not automatically a sign of failure.
First, distinguish a Sequoia update from an upgrade
An update moves between releases in the same macOS generation, such as one Sequoia 15.x release to another. An upgrade changes macOS generations, such as moving from Sonoma 14 to Sequoia 15. A smaller security-related or background update can follow a different download and installation process again.
Software Update may offer more than one choice, including a newer major macOS version. As of Apple’s June 2026 support documentation, Tahoe 26 is newer than Sequoia 15, which remains an available upgrade path for compatible Macs. Check the version and details before proceeding rather than assuming the first prominent button installs Sequoia. The total wait is the sum of checking, downloading, preparing, restarting, installing, and returning to the login screen. There is no single Apple-published duration for a Sequoia installation. The estimates below are planning guidance, not measured guarantees.

Checking and downloading
Software Update checks for compatible software before installation. Download time is often the least predictable part: it depends on the update size, the connection, and demand on Apple’s servers. Macworld notes that server congestion can slow downloads or cause timeouts, and that downloading can take considerable time before installation begins. Preparing, restarting, and installing
After downloading, the Mac may spend time preparing the update before restarting. During installation it can show an Apple logo and progress bar, display a blank screen temporarily, or restart more than once. A displayed time estimate or percentage is not a dependable countdown.

Why one Mac takes longer than another
- Update size and starting version: A major-generation upgrade is generally a larger task than a small release within Sequoia. Moving across several macOS generations can add preparation.
- Internet and server load: A slow or unstable connection, or a release-day rush, can extend the download or cause it to time out.
- Hardware and storage: Older Macs may take longer to prepare or install; insufficient free space can prevent an update from completing. There is no universal free-space figure that applies to every release and installation path.
- Power and laptop state: Low battery can prevent an update from starting or finishing. Closing a laptop lid can interrupt or delay installation.
- Managed settings: A school- or employer-managed Mac may have update restrictions, delayed releases, or administrator requirements.
Older Intel Macs may take longer than newer hardware, but no processor type guarantees a particular duration. The update size, storage, and network conditions matter too.
How to check for the Sequoia update
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General in the sidebar, then choose Software Update.
- Wait for the Mac to check for available software.
- Review the version and update details. If multiple choices appear, confirm whether each is an update or a major upgrade.
- Select the appropriate button—such as Update Now, Upgrade Now, or Restart Now—and enter an administrator password if asked.
- Keep the Mac connected to power and wait for the login screen or desktop to return.

Prepare before you start
- Back up important files, preferably with Time Machine or another reliable backup method.
- Connect a MacBook to power and use a stable internet connection.
- Check that you have enough free storage for the particular update; do not rely on a universal minimum.
- Save work and close applications. Avoid starting just before a meeting, trip, or deadline.
- Check your current macOS version in Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Read the version and release details in Software Update, especially when a newer major macOS upgrade is also offered.
- Keep a laptop open and connected to power during installation. Apple advises not putting the Mac to sleep or closing its lid while the update completes.
Is a paused progress bar normal?
It can be. Apple says the progress bar may move slowly or pause for long periods while macOS updates or upgrades. The screen may go blank, the bar may jump rather than advance steadily, and the Mac may restart several times. A pause by itself does not establish that the update has failed. Apple recommends starting a lengthy installation in the evening so it can finish overnight. Apple’s startup-progress troubleshooting guide describes these behaviors.
Look at the whole situation instead of applying a short countdown. Note whether the screen changes occasionally, the bar advances after a long interval, the Mac appears to restart, or an error appears. A Mac that has shown no visible change for several hours, repeatedly restarts, or remains at the same startup screen warrants troubleshooting; elapsed time alone cannot diagnose the cause.

When and how to troubleshoot
Do not force the Mac off just because the bar has paused. Interrupting an active installation can create further problems. If it appears genuinely unable to progress—for example, it has remained unchanged for several hours or repeatedly fails to start—Apple’s escalation steps are:

- Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to turn the Mac off, then turn it back on.
- If the problem continues, shut it down again and disconnect nonessential accessories, such as external drives, printers, and hubs. Restart.
- If it still cannot start, use macOS Recovery and run Disk Utility to repair the startup disk.
- If needed, reinstall macOS from Recovery. If the Mac still cannot start properly, contact Apple or an authorized service provider.

If Sequoia does not appear in Software Update
Software Update lists software compatible with the Mac. If Sequoia is missing, the Mac may not support it, may already be on the newest compatible version offered, may be managed by an organization, or may be showing a newer major upgrade instead. A temporary Software Update problem is also possible. Check Apple’s current compatibility and upgrade information rather than relying on an older model list; for a managed Mac, ask the organization’s IT administrator. Ways to reduce avoidable delay
- Use a reliable, fast Wi-Fi connection or Ethernet where available; this can improve download reliability, not guarantee a faster installation.
- If Apple’s servers appear overloaded, retry later rather than repeatedly cancelling and restarting.
- Free storage before beginning, keep the Mac on power, and avoid changing Wi-Fi networks during the download.
- Close unnecessary applications and allow ample time. For a long download or installation, Apple’s advice to begin in the evening can avoid a deadline pressure.
These steps reduce common interruptions; they cannot remove the time required for the Mac to prepare and install the update.
