Jam.dev captures a screenshot or screen recording and attaches technical context that is available for that capture. A developer can replay the visual sequence and inspect details such as browser, operating system, viewport, URL, network activity, logs, and user events to retrace a reported problem. That is evidence-assisted investigation—not proof that Jam automatically restores the original browser state or guarantees that the bug will happen again.

What Jam captures

Jam’s browser extension lets someone capture a screenshot or record activity on a website. The visual artifact is packaged with technical information available for that report. Depending on the capture and configuration, that context can include the browser and operating system, viewport, URL, console logs, network requests, and user interactions. Clicks, navigation changes, and typed input may help show the path that led to the problem.

The practical benefit is that a bug report can include more than a sentence such as “the page broke.” The image or recording shows what the reporter saw, while the accompanying context can help a developer identify where to investigate. The contents are conditional: a report should not be assumed to contain every listed field or every kind of diagnostic data.

Screenshot or recording?

A screenshot preserves a particular visual state. A recording gives the reviewer a sequence to replay, which can make an interaction, timing issue, or navigation path easier to follow. Neither alone explains every cause: the developer may still need to inspect the relevant requests, logs, application state, or code.

How to capture a screenshot in Jam

  1. Open the page or application where the issue appears and use Jam’s screenshot tool.

  2. For a full-screen screenshot, click once on the page rather than dragging out a selection area, following Jam’s help instructions.

  3. For a hover state, choose the three- or six-second delay described in Jam’s instructions. Move the pointer over the target element while the timer runs, then capture.

  4. Annotate the screenshot if useful, then share the resulting report with the team so the visual evidence and available diagnostics can be reviewed together.

Jam also documents keyboard shortcuts for screenshot capture, tab recording, and instant replay. The displayed key combinations are platform-specific examples, not universal shortcuts; browser extension shortcuts can be customized in browser settings.

How replay helps reproduce a browser issue

Replay lets an engineer watch the captured experience and retrace the user’s apparent path. Alongside the recording, available logs, requests, interactions, and environment information can point toward the part of the flow worth investigating. A failed request or a console error, for example, may help narrow the search, but it does not by itself establish the root cause.

It is important to distinguish replay from restoring a live browser session. The documented workflow establishes a recording or screenshot plus diagnostic context. It does not establish automatic restoration of cookies, local or session storage, server-side state, or the exact original environment. Nor does it promise that replaying a recording will make an intermittent or environment-specific bug occur on demand. Treat the recording as a trace of what happened and the attached information as clues for attempting reproduction.

AI-generated report details

Jam says its AI can suggest a report title, summary, and reproduction steps. Those suggestions can help start a report, but they should be checked against the actual recording and behavior. Generated steps are not evidence that the sequence is complete or that the issue has been solved.

Can someone outside your team submit a recording?

Yes. Jam’s Recording Links workflow lets a team create a link from the extension or dashboard and send it to a reporter. The recipient opens the link in a browser, starts and submits a recording, and the submission appears in the team dashboard. For this specific link flow, Jam documents compatibility with desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari; that list should not be generalized to every Jam feature or to mobile browsers.

Jam’s homepage describes automatic blurring of matched elements during Recording Link sessions. That product statement is not a substitute for checking what information a particular recording may capture or what settings apply. Teams should review current behavior and their own privacy requirements before asking customers to share a recording.

Adding application and service context

Jam describes custom metadata for application-specific details such as user IDs or feature flags. It also describes connecting Sentry to bring backend errors and service logs into an investigation. These are additional context sources that depend on setup and availability; do not assume they are present in every screenshot or recording by default.

Jam also describes sending captured issues into workflows including Linear, Jira, and Slack, and mentions agent-oriented workflows. Treat those as examples of stated integrations, not a permanent or exhaustive compatibility list. Teams should confirm that the integration and fields they need are available in their current setup.

What Jam can—and cannot—tell a developer

Evidence in a report What it can help with What it does not establish by itself
Screenshot Shows the visible page state at capture time. The actions or events that led to that state.
Screen recording Lets a teammate replay the recorded visual sequence and retrace the user’s path. Automatic recreation of the original browser state or guaranteed reproduction.
Available logs and network requests Can help locate errors, failed requests, or points for further debugging. The root cause, or a guarantee that all relevant events were captured.
Environment details and user events Can help compare the reported context with a developer’s attempt to reproduce it. That every report contains the same fields or that the original environment can be restored.
Custom metadata or connected service data Can add application-specific or backend context when configured. That these integrations are active or populated in every report.

When a screenshot API is the better fit

Jam’s documented purpose here is bug reporting: capture a user-facing screenshot or recording with relevant technical context so a team can investigate. If the need is instead to generate website screenshots or PDFs from code—for example, as an automated capture step in a developer workflow—a screenshot API is a different kind of tool. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for that job: its clean captures remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is not a replacement for Jam’s recording-and-diagnostics workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off website image, make a GET request with the target URL and your API key. This cURL command saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie or consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Troubleshooting a Jam capture or report

The screenshot misses the full page

For Jam’s documented full-screen screenshot workflow, choose the screenshot tool and click once on the page instead of dragging an area. If the result still is not what you intended, check that you used the screenshot workflow rather than selecting a region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hover menu disappeared before capture

Use the documented delayed capture: choose a three- or six-second timer, then place the pointer over the element while it runs. A delay gives the hover state time to appear before the screenshot is taken.

A keyboard shortcut does nothing

Check the extension’s shortcut assignment in your browser settings. Jam documents shortcuts for capture and replay, but combinations can vary by platform and may have been customized.

A report lacks a log, request, or application field

Not every context field is guaranteed for every capture. Check what details are available in that report and whether the relevant integration or custom metadata has been configured. For backend service context, Jam describes a Sentry connection; for application-specific context, it describes custom metadata.

The team cannot make the bug happen again

Use the recording to retrace the visible steps and review the available environment details, user events, logs, and requests. Then try to reproduce the issue in a suitable environment and inspect the application or service state as needed. A Jam replay is evidence of the captured experience, not a promise that the underlying conditions have been restored.

Does a person using a Jam Recording Link need to install Jam?

For the documented Recording Links flow, the recipient can open the link in a supported desktop browser and submit a recording without downloading Jam.
