Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) and Microsoft are applying generative AI to internal beauty-business work—not offering a public AI beauty adviser. The collaboration’s announced uses include helping marketing teams respond to social trends, supporting product-development work, and, in a later description, using a tool called ConsumerIQ to connect company information and generate recommendations.

What is the Estée Lauder–Microsoft AI collaboration?

On April 26, 2024, ELC announced an AI Innovation Lab with Microsoft, describing it as an expansion of a strategic relationship that began in 2017. The announcement named Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service as the technology being used to develop generative AI applications for ELC’s prestige beauty business. ELC said its portfolio includes more than 20 prestige beauty brands. ELC’s 2024 announcement

The announcement set out two areas of intended use: marketing teams’ response to social trends and consumer demand, and support for research and development (R&D). A later ELC feature, published April 29, 2025, described ConsumerIQ, a custom agent built in Microsoft Copilot Studio and underpinned by Azure OpenAI Service. The company said ConsumerIQ connects information, identifies trends, and offers strategic recommendations through a natural-language chat interface. ELC’s 2025 ConsumerIQ feature

What are the AI tools intended to do?

Use Intended users and purpose What ELC has described
Marketing chatbot Internal marketing teams; respond to social trends and consumer demand. The 2024 announcement described a chatbot intended to help teams navigate proprietary product and claims information. It was not described as a public beauty-advice service.
R&D support Scientists and product teams; support product innovation. ELC said AI could help scientists respond more quickly to product and ingredient trends. The announcement described this as an intended use, not a measured result.
ConsumerIQ Company users seeking connected information and insights. In 2025, ELC described a Copilot Studio agent that connects information, identifies trends, and supplies recommendations through chat. The feature does not provide a detailed technical architecture or independent evaluation.

How does ConsumerIQ fit into the collaboration?

ConsumerIQ is the more specific tool described publicly after the 2024 lab announcement. ELC’s 2025 account identifies Microsoft Copilot Studio as the environment in which the custom agent was built and Azure OpenAI Service as the service underpinning it. The company’s description emphasizes finding connections across information and turning them into insights and recommendations.

The available description does not establish that ConsumerIQ is the same system as the earlier marketing chatbot, or that it replaces the announced R&D work. It is more accurate to treat ConsumerIQ as a later, separately named AI application within the broader collaboration than to assume the announcements refer to one unified product.

What is known about outcomes—and what is not?

ELC’s announcements explain planned uses and high-level capabilities, but they do not publish quantified evidence that these systems increased sales, shortened development timelines, improved product quality, or delivered other business gains. Nor do the cited company accounts include an independent assessment of performance. Benefits such as faster trend response should therefore be understood as goals or company descriptions, not verified results.

The 2024 announcement also mentioned ELC’s Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant, an accessibility-focused mobile app using Azure AI that launched in early 2023. At the time of the announcement, ELC said it was available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland, with further rollouts planned. That describes availability as reported in April 2024, not the app’s current status.
