In Gmail on a computer, click the gear-shaped Settings icon in the upper-right corner, then select See all settings. In the Gmail mobile app, tap Menu, then Settings on iPhone or iPad, or General settings (or a specific account) on Android. Google’s platform instructions are documented in its Gmail Help.
Open Gmail settings on a computer
- Open Gmail in a desktop web browser and confirm that the correct Google account is active.
- Click the gear-shaped Settings icon in the top-right area.
- Gmail opens the Quick settings sidebar.
- Click See all settings at the top of that sidebar for the complete settings page.
- Choose a tab, change the option, and click Save Changes at the bottom when Gmail provides that button.
Quick settings is intended for fast changes such as theme, density, reading pane, and inbox layout. The full page contains tabs such as General, Labels, Inbox, Accounts and Import, Filters and Blocked Addresses, Forwarding and POP/IMAP, Add-ons, Chat, Advanced, Offline, and Themes. The tabs shown can vary by account type, enabled features, and Google Workspace administrator policies. Google explains the Quick settings interface at Gmail Help.

Find settings in the Gmail app on Android
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Menu (the three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
- Tap General settings for app-wide Gmail behavior, or tap a listed account for settings specific to that account.
Android’s mobile controls can include notifications, conversation view, swipe actions, sender images, signatures, vacation responder, Smart Reply, inbox type, synchronization, days of mail to sync, labels, and attachment downloading. Google states that some Gmail settings are available only on a computer, so the app does not expose the entire desktop settings page. See the current Android instructions.
Find settings in the Gmail app on iPhone or iPad
- Open Gmail.
- Tap Menu in the top-left corner.
- Tap Settings.
- If multiple accounts are signed in, select the account you want to change when prompted.
Available controls can include notifications, labels, mobile signature, vacation responder, Smart Reply, search-history controls, inbox customization, swipe actions, and Gmail’s device privacy permissions. Gmail settings or Google Account settings?
Use Gmail settings for mail behavior and presentation: inbox layout, labels, filters, forwarding, POP/IMAP, signatures, vacation responder, conversation view, notifications, and swipe actions.
Use Google Account settings for broader account controls such as your password, recovery phone or email, two-step verification, signed-in devices, connected apps, personal information, and storage. Security guidance is also available for two-step verification and account security changes.

Why can’t you find Settings or See all settings?
The gear icon is missing
- Make sure you are in Gmail itself, not another Google product or an embedded mail view.
- Expand the browser window and reset excessive zoom.
- Reload Gmail, then try a private or incognito window with extensions disabled.
- If you are using the mobile app, use Menu → Settings (iPhone/iPad) or Menu → General settings (Android); mobile apps do not use the desktop gear path.
- On a work or school account, an administrator may restrict particular features or settings.
You opened Quick settings but need a detailed option
Click See all settings. The sidebar is not the complete tabbed settings page.

The option is absent on your phone
Check the relevant account, then try Gmail on a computer. Google explicitly notes that some settings can only be changed on a computer. A mobile browser may also show a simplified layout, so do not assume it exposes every desktop control.
A change appears not to work
Verify that you edited the intended account. Android distinguishes app-wide General settings from settings for a selected account; changes to one account do not automatically apply to every account. On desktop, return to the correct tab and use Save Changes when shown. Mobile controls generally apply through a switch, menu selection, or an immediate confirmation rather than one universal Save button.
What you should see after opening settings
On desktop, the gear opens a Quick settings sidebar and See all settings opens the full Gmail configuration page. On Android and iPhone or iPad, the Menu route opens the smaller mobile settings interface. If the control concerns identity or security rather than email behavior, leave Gmail and use Google Account settings instead.
