To add rear surround speakers to a Samsung soundbar, use the compatible Samsung Wireless Rear Speaker Kit listed for your exact soundbar model—or the rear speakers supplied with the soundbar. Most Samsung soundbars do not have standard speaker terminals for arbitrary passive speakers, and third-party Bluetooth speakers do not pair through Samsung’s rear-speaker setup.
After confirming compatibility, connect the speakers to their receiver if the kit has one, power the system, and use the soundbar remote’s ID SET procedure if pairing is needed. A solid-blue LINK light confirms the wireless connection; it does not, by itself, confirm that your TV or source is sending multichannel surround audio.
1. Check compatibility before buying or connecting a kit
Find the complete model number on the soundbar’s label or in its settings, then check Samsung’s rear-speaker compatibility information and the soundbar’s user manual. Follow the manual for your exact model if its instructions differ from Samsung’s general setup steps. Check the regional suffix too—for example, /ZA—because availability and compatibility information can vary by market.

Samsung’s SWA-9500S product page also lists selected newer models, including Q900F, Q800F, QS700F, Q800D, QS730D, S800D, and S801D. Compatibility changes across generations: do not choose a kit just because it is Samsung-branded, has a similar model number, or is advertised as supporting Atmos. Confirm your precise soundbar model in Samsung’s information before purchasing.
Samsung soundbars generally use compatible Samsung rear-speaker systems, not ordinary passive surround speakers connected directly to the bar. Some models may also need a wireless dongle; check the soundbar manual. Pairing uses Samsung’s ID SET process, not ordinary Bluetooth pairing with a speaker from another brand.
2. Identify how your rear speakers connect

Before setup, have the exact soundbar model, compatible kit, supplied cables and receiver (if included), a power outlet, and a working soundbar remote ready. Keep the rear system within reasonable wireless range while pairing. If your goal is TV surround sound, also check that the TV-to-soundbar connection and audio settings can pass the format you want.
3. Assemble a receiver-based kit
- Place the rear speakers and wireless receiver, following the kit manual.
- Connect the gray speaker plug to the receiver’s gray jack and the blue plug to its blue jack.
- Connect each cable to the rear speaker bearing the corresponding label or color. Follow the kit’s labels rather than guessing left and right from where you stand.
- Insert the red and black wire ends into their matching speaker terminals. Make sure the terminal clamp grips exposed metal, not the wire’s insulation.
- Connect the receiver’s power cord and plug it into an outlet.
Incorrect color matching can reverse the rear channels; a clamp gripping insulation can leave a speaker weak or silent. For a kit without the usual separate receiver, such as the SWA-9500S, use that model’s assembly instructions instead of applying receiver-based wiring steps.

4. Pair the rear system with ID SET
Speakers supplied with a soundbar are generally factory-coded to it and often connect automatically when powered. If the LINK indicator blinks, the soundbar was reset, or you bought a separate kit, try Samsung’s general manual-pairing procedure:
- Turn the soundbar off using its remote or Power button.
- Press and hold the remote’s VOL or Up button for about 5–6 seconds, until ID SET appears on the soundbar display.
- Turn the soundbar on again and wait for the rear system’s LINK indicator to stop blinking and glow solid blue.
The button and indicator behavior can vary by model. Some soundbars do not have a text display, and the remote control sequence may differ. Use your soundbar’s manual if ID SET does not appear or the indicator pattern does not match these steps. Keep the rear system close to the soundbar while pairing if you suspect distance or interference.
5. Enable and adjust rear-speaker output
On remotes with a Sound Control button, press it repeatedly to cycle through the available audio controls until rear-speaker settings appear. Use the directional buttons to switch rear speakers on or off; press Sound Control again to reach rear-speaker level. Samsung’s general support instructions describe a range from −6 to +6, but controls and labels vary by model. Some newer systems offer controls through SmartThings; app options are not the same on every soundbar.

Start at a moderate level and adjust for your room, seating position, and content. Raising the rear level to its maximum is not automatically the right setting.

6. Check that the system is playing surround sound
A solid-blue LINK light means the rear system is connected wirelessly. It does not mean the soundbar is receiving a discrete multichannel soundtrack, nor does it prove that rear output is enabled. Keep these checks separate:
- Connection: The LINK indicator is solid blue.
- Output setting: Rear speakers are enabled and their level is not set too low or Off.
- Source signal: The TV, streaming device, or player is sending a supported multichannel format.
- Soundtrack activity: The scene actually contains sound intended for the rear channels.
Test with a known Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Atmos movie or program that your soundbar supports. Check the TV’s digital audio settings: if a bitstream or passthrough option is available, make sure the TV is not forcing PCM stereo. HDMI ARC/eARC is generally preferable when available for passing supported audio formats, but the format reaching the soundbar also depends on the TV, source device, connection, and content.
Rear speakers may be quiet during dialogue, menus, stereo music, or scenes with little ambient sound. Stereo content may be duplicated or processed through the rear speakers rather than delivered as discrete left- and right-surround channels. Samsung notes that adding speakers to a 2.0 soundbar does not create separate multichannel surround in the same way as a system with multichannel processing. A brief volume increase can help confirm rear output; return to a comfortable level afterward.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The LINK light keeps blinking
- Recheck compatibility against the exact soundbar model. An unsupported kit cannot be made compatible by repeating pairing.
- Confirm the receiver or speakers are powered and that cables are seated.
- Power-cycle the soundbar and rear system, then repeat ID SET in the correct order: soundbar off, hold the specified remote button, soundbar on.
- Try pairing with the rear system closer to the soundbar. Move it away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless-phone bases, or other possible sources of interference.
- If ID SET does not appear or the light pattern differs, use the model-specific manual; the general button sequence is not universal.
The LINK light is solid blue, but there is no rear audio
Check that rear-speaker output is enabled, then test with a known multichannel soundtrack rather than ordinary dialogue or stereo music. Confirm that the TV or source is not outputting only two-channel PCM, and check the sound mode and connection path. On receiver-based kits, inspect the speaker wiring and color matching as well.

Only one rear speaker works
Check that the gray and blue plugs are in the corresponding receiver jacks and that each cable reaches the correctly labeled speaker. Make sure both red and black conductors are secured, with the clamps gripping exposed metal rather than insulation. Check any balance or channel setting available on your system.
The rear speakers work but sound too quiet
Try a verified multichannel scene, confirm the TV’s digital audio output, and check the rear level and sound mode. Soundtracks differ in how much they use rear channels; the speakers are not expected to play continuously at the same volume as the soundbar. Placement and orientation can also affect what you hear.
ID SET never appears or the kit still will not pair
First rule out incompatibility. Confirm the exact kit and soundbar models in Samsung’s compatibility information and manual. Then check whether your model uses a different button sequence or needs a wireless dongle. If the kit is listed as compatible and the model-specific procedure still fails, consult Samsung support rather than assuming the generic sequence applies.
When an add-on kit may not be worth it
If your soundbar supports a compatible kit and you are happy with its sound, the kit named by Samsung is the straightforward choice. But check availability and total cost before buying: older accessories can be difficult to find, and an add-on kit may approach the cost of a newer complete soundbar package. Marketplace listings may also omit the correct receiver, cables, or power supply, or differ by region.
A complete soundbar package with rear speakers may make more sense if the correct kit is unavailable or the existing bar is limited to stereo or virtual surround. For brand-agnostic speakers, an AV receiver and conventional passive speakers offer more flexibility but require more equipment and cabling. If you mainly want louder or fuller sound, a rear-speaker kit may not address the problem; consider whether the soundbar’s supported subwoofer or a different system better fits your goal.
Quick setup checklist
- Confirmed the exact soundbar model and compatible kit.
- Assembled the kit using its manual; matched cable colors and secured exposed wire.
- Powered the receiver or rear speakers.
- Completed ID SET if needed and confirmed a solid-blue LINK light.
- Enabled rear output and set a suitable level.
- Configured the TV or source to pass a supported multichannel format.
- Tested with appropriate 5.1 or Atmos content—not only stereo or dialogue.
