Microlink extensions attach added hair to small sections of your natural hair with tiny beads that a stylist closes using professional pliers. The bead—not glue or heat—holds the extension in place. “I-tip” describes one type of extension strand used with this method; it is not another name for the attachment method itself.

What microlink extensions are—and how they attach

A stylist sections your hair, threads a small section of it through a microbead, places an extension, then compresses the bead with purpose-made extension pliers. The bead grips the natural hair and the extension. This avoids glue and heat at the attachment point, but it does not remove the need to protect your hair from tension, excess weight or poor installation.

Beads may be metal or silicone-lined. The right size and placement depend on your hair and the extension being installed. A bead that is too large, a section that is too small, or an overly tight attachment can put excessive load on the hair and scalp.

Microlink versus I-tip

Microlink refers to the bead-based attachment method. An I-tip is an individual extension strand with a tip that can be inserted into the bead. In other words, an I-tip can be attached using microlinks, but the terms describe different parts of the process.

LaaVoo 20 Inch Microlink Hair Extensions Human Hair, Jet Black, 50g
  • No-Heat Design: LaaVoo micro link hair is designed with silicone‑lined beads that attach without heat which helps reduce the risk of damage from hot tools; it keeps your scalp cool and comfortable during long workdays or weekend getaways
  • Hidden Links: The ultra-small, color‑matched rings lie flat against your scalp, staying nearly invisible; ideal for both medium-coarse and fine hair types; they typically don't poke or scratch, so you can enjoy active days or dance floors
  • Custom Volume: LaaVoo micro loop hair is available in 14–24 inch lengths and 50g or 100g per pack to add subtle lift or fullness; for everyday highlights, use 50–100g; for weddings or photoshoots, 150–200g builds natural voluminous hair
  • Reusable Fit: These rings open with standard pliers, so you can unclamp and reposition as your natural hair grows; this adjustability lets you extend wear life and refresh the fit without a full reinstallation every time
  • Easy Install: Each strand comes pre‑threaded on a plastic loop, making threading simple and quick; with just micro‑ring pliers, you can achieve a salon‑quality result at home—suitable for first‑timers or budget‑conscious users

How the installation works

Installation is best handled by a stylist trained in the specific method. Section size, bead placement and tension all affect how much strain each attachment places on your hair.

  1. Consult and assess. The stylist considers your hair’s density, strength, condition and desired result, then chooses the extension type, weight and placement. Discuss any breakage, thinning, chemical processing or scalp sensitivity before proceeding.
  2. Section and prepare. Hair is separated into small, controlled sections so attachments can be placed and distributed deliberately.
  3. Thread the natural hair. The stylist passes a small section through a bead, taking care not to make the section too small or pull it too tightly.
  4. Add the extension. For I-tips, an individual strand is positioned in the bead. With a microlink weft, the stylist secures a track across multiple beaded sections.
  5. Close and check the bead. Professional pliers compress the bead. The stylist checks that the attachment is secure without restricting movement or pulling uncomfortably.
  6. Blend and finish. The stylist checks placement, blends or trims the extension ends as needed, and styles the hair.

Do not try to copy the clamping process at home as a substitute for training. A stylist also needs to judge whether your hair can support the added weight and how the attachments should be placed.

I-tip strands or a microlink weft?

Consideration I-tip, strand by strand Microlink weft
How it is attached Individual strands are installed separately. A weft or track is secured across multiple beaded sections.
Placement Individual placement offers more control and can suit targeted fullness. A track covers more hair across a row.
What to discuss Ask how the number and weight of individual strands will be distributed. Ask how the track’s weight will be supported by the sections holding it.
Time and maintenance Depend on the amount of hair, installation technique and your stylist’s plan. Also depend on the amount of hair, technique and maintenance plan; do not assume a weft is automatically quicker or easier to maintain.

Neither option is universally better. The useful comparison is how each method’s weight and placement fit your natural hair, the fullness or length you want, how visible attachments may be in your usual styles, and what maintenance you can keep up with. Ask the stylist to explain the proposed extension weight and why it suits your hair.

Who may be a suitable candidate?

Microlinks leave your own hair exposed between the attachments, so they are not a protective style. A consultation matters particularly if your hair is fragile, damaged, visibly thinning or heavily processed: it may not support the extra weight safely. A stylist should be willing to advise against extensions, change the plan or postpone installation if your hair is not a good candidate.

  • Discuss existing breakage, thinning, scalp discomfort and chemical processing honestly.
  • Ask how the stylist will distribute weight and leave enough room for natural hair movement.
  • Consider whether you can attend maintenance appointments and follow the home-care plan.
  • Speak up if an attachment feels painful or pulls. Do not treat ongoing pain as a normal part of wearing extensions.

Damage risks and how to reduce them

Microlinks are not automatically damage-free just because they use no glue or heat at the attachment point. Excess tension, heavy or poorly distributed extensions, incorrect sectioning, missed maintenance, matting and forceful removal can contribute to breakage or traction-related injury. Hair.com’s L’Oréal Professional guide quotes Mizani hairstylist Ashley Lee saying microlinks are safe when the technician allows hair mobility and the client cares for the hair between salon visits; that qualification is important.

Reduce avoidable strain by choosing a trained stylist for consultation, installation, move-ups and removal. Ask what signs mean an attachment is too tight or slipping, and follow the stylist’s advice about brushing, washing, sleeping and exercise. If your hair becomes painful, matted or unusually broken, contact the stylist rather than pulling at the beads or waiting for a scheduled appointment.

How long microlinks last and when they need a move-up

As your natural hair grows, the beads move farther from the scalp. Over time, that can make attachments loose or increase the chance of tangling and matting near the roots. A stylist should check the attachments and reposition them before growth creates those problems.

There is no single interval that applies to every installation. Published guidance varies: Ugeat gives a 6–10 week use cycle for its microlink extensions (2025); Runature describes repositioning after 6–8 weeks (2025); and salon Clutch and Curl reports an approximately 12-week cycle when its recommended maintenance schedule is followed (2026). These are method- and client-dependent examples, not a guarantee that your own set can safely remain in for that long. Follow the schedule set by the stylist who sees your hair and attachments.

What installation time should you expect?

Time depends on the number of pieces, the desired result, your starting hair and the method. Allure reported in 2022 that volume-only work using roughly 75–100 pieces takes about two to three hours. It also reported that a full head, or adding length to short hair, can take up to eight hours. Those are published estimates, not a promise for every salon appointment; ask your stylist for an estimate based on the plan for your hair.

Care between salon visits

Gentle handling helps limit unnecessary stress on both your natural hair and the attachments. Your installing stylist’s instructions should take precedence because hair texture, density and daily activity can change the care plan.

  • Detangle gently from the ends upward, supporting the roots while you brush.
  • Keep heavy conditioner away from the beads, where buildup or slippage may become an issue.
  • Use heat protectant when heat styling, and follow the stylist’s directions for washing, sleeping and exercise.
  • Arrange stylist checks and move-ups on the recommended schedule; do not wait for loose attachments or root matting to become severe.
  • Have a stylist open the beads and remove the extensions. Do not pull extensions out yourself.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Which attachment method are you proposing: I-tip strands, a microlink weft or another bead-based variation?
  • How will you decide whether my hair can support the proposed weight and placement?
  • What maintenance interval do you recommend for my hair, and what would make you move me up sooner?
  • Who will handle move-ups and removal, and what should I do if an attachment hurts, loosens or mats?
  • What does the quoted service include, and how do installation, maintenance and removal affect the total cost?

There is no reliable universal price in the published guidance here. The cost depends on the amount and type of extension hair, the installation method and the salon’s charges; request an itemized quote that accounts for follow-up visits and removal rather than comparing an installation price alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are microlinks and beads the same thing?

“Microlink” usually refers to the bead-based attachment method; the bead is the small component that grips the natural hair and extension.

Can microlinks be used to add fullness without much length?

Yes. Individual I-tip placement can be useful for targeted fullness, but the stylist should match the added weight and placement to your hair.

Can I remove microlink extensions myself?

Have a stylist open the beads and remove the extensions. Pulling them out can damage your natural hair.
