If Microsoft asks you to verify your age, use the link, QR code or Verify now option in the Microsoft sign-in or content flow, then complete one of the methods offered in your region. If Microsoft has classified your account as a child account because of a wrong birth date, ordinary age verification may not fix it; use the birth-date or parental-consent process instead.
There is no universal age-verification button for every account and country. Microsoft’s current support page lists a proactive verification route for Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Elsewhere, you may only be asked when signing in or trying to access age-restricted content. Microsoft’s verification guidance explains the available route for your account.
When Microsoft asks you to verify your age
Microsoft may request age verification to meet local regulations and restrict access to content it considers age-inappropriate. A prompt can appear during sign-in or when you try to view, purchase or download an adult-rated game or app. The exact requirement depends on your region, the service and the content; it is not a universal requirement for every Microsoft account.

If you cannot find a verification button, that may be expected: Microsoft says proactive verification is currently available in Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom. In other locations, follow the prompt if one appears rather than assuming a direct verification page must be available. First make sure you are signed in to the affected account.
How to verify your age
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that received the prompt.
- Use the verification link, QR code or Verify now control shown in Microsoft’s flow.
- Choose an option offered for your country or region.
- Complete the instructions from the verification partner, then return to Microsoft and retry the sign-in, purchase or download if needed.
Depending on your location and the partner handling the check, the options may include email-based verification, a regional digital-identity service, facial age estimation from a selfie, a credit card, or an accepted identity document such as a driving licence, passport, national ID or residence permit. These are possible methods, not a menu every user will see. Read the verification screen for the specific method and any conditions; a credit-card check is not necessarily a purchase.
For safety, start from the Microsoft prompt or Microsoft Support. Do not email identity documents or selfies to an unsolicited address, and do not enter sensitive information on a site found through an advertisement or forum. Check the browser address before submitting details.

Check whether verification succeeded
Sign in at account.microsoft.com, then open Your info → Profile info → Age verification. Microsoft says this section shows the account’s verification status. If the check is successful, its result applies to both the Microsoft and Xbox accounts. Separate Xbox or Family Safety settings can still impose restrictions.
If Microsoft thinks you are a child
If your real age is adult but the account has a child birth date or asks for parent or guardian consent, treat it as an account-information or consent issue. Simply repeating age verification or changing a visible profile field may not remove the child-account status. Microsoft’s instructions differ depending on whether parental consent has already been attached to the account. See Microsoft’s birth-date correction steps.
Adult account with the wrong birth date and no parental consent
- Sign in at login.live.com to begin the consent process.
- Select I’m a parent or guardian.
- Sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account, or create one when prompted.
- Accept the consent form by selecting Yes, I agree, then select Family Safety to complete the operation.
- Review the accounts at account.live.com/mykids.asp, choose Edit this child’s personal info for the affected account, and correct the birth date.
Microsoft’s support guidance generally defines an adult for this process as at least 18, with a stated threshold of 19 in Canada. The applicable rules can vary by region.

Adult account with existing parental consent
Sign in with the adult Microsoft account that originally granted consent. Open Manage child accounts, select Edit this child’s personal info, and follow the instructions to correct the date. The original consenting adult may be the only account permitted to manage the child account.
“Parent or guardian consent is required”
Use the parental-consent route, not repeated attempts at ordinary age verification: sign in at login.live.com, select I’m a parent or guardian, sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account and approve the request. Then select Family Safety. If the date of birth is wrong, use the managed-account steps above to correct it.
If the account genuinely belongs to a child, the child cannot independently remove parental consent or edit the account out of child status when the recorded date places them below the applicable age threshold. The adult with the relevant consent must manage the account.

If a parent cannot see the child account
Check that the parent is signed in with the right Microsoft account and that consent was completed. The child account may be managed by another adult: being a family organizer does not always grant permission to manage consent if that organizer was not the person who originally granted it. Find or recover the original consenting adult’s account and use that account to manage the child. Microsoft explains this in its parental-consent guidance.
If the adult account cannot be accessed, try Microsoft account recovery. This can be a critical dependency: Microsoft says support agents cannot bypass account authentication to access or change account details.

If a check fails, Microsoft says you should have another opportunity to try. Confirm that you are using the right Microsoft account and region, and follow the current prompt to choose another offered method if available. Do not assume that every failure will have the same cause or remedy.

For accounts subject to the relevant restrictions, an unverified account may be unable to make new purchases or downloads of games and apps rated 18+. Microsoft says mature content already owned remains accessible and playable. A failed or declined check does not, by itself, mean that the entire account will be deleted or every Microsoft service blocked; restrictions depend on the service, content, region and reason for the check.
Microsoft says most checks finish within seconds, though some methods can take a few minutes. Verification is usually needed only once per account, but a repeat check can occur in uncommon cases, such as after personal account details change or after moving to another country or region. If asked again, make sure you are signed into the same account and use the new prompt rather than an old link.
Privacy: what happens to a selfie or ID?
Microsoft says its age-assurance partners process a selfie or uploaded identity document and return the completed verification status to Microsoft, rather than the verification material itself. Microsoft’s FAQ also says verification data is encrypted during processing, used for age-verification purposes, deleted by the partner after processing and not used for marketing. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of its process, not independent verification of a particular partner’s handling.
The provider and information collected can vary. Microsoft’s Privacy Statement advises users to consult the notice accompanying their specific verification request. Read that notice before submitting personal information.
When age verification is not the fix
- Wrong birth date or locked date field: use the relevant adult or consent-management route above; do not enter a false birth date to force a different classification.
- Xbox remains restricted after verification: check the age-verification status, then review Xbox privacy, content-rating, spending and Family Safety settings. These controls are separate.
- Store purchase is blocked for another reason: verify that the correct account and region are in use and check for other account or payment restrictions.
- Cannot access the account: use Microsoft’s sign-in and verification guidance to find the sign-in helper or support route.
Microsoft Support can direct you to the right process, but Microsoft says support agents cannot directly access and change account details or send password-reset links. Do not create a new account as a first fix: that can separate you from Outlook mail, OneDrive files, Xbox purchases, game progress, subscriptions and other account-linked data.
