Apple Sandbox on iPhone is a test environment for developers checking In-App Purchases—not an app or a device-wide mode you can switch on. Create a Sandbox Apple Account in App Store Connect, then use your iPhone’s Developer settings to test a development build or TestFlight app without real purchase charges. If you mean iOS’s automatic app security isolation or an app named Sandbox, those are different things.
What “Sandbox” means on iPhone
In this guide, Sandbox means Apple’s StoreKit environment for simulating In-App Purchases and subscriptions. Developers can test purchases, renewals, failed or interrupted payments, refunds, introductory offers, Family Sharing, and related transaction behavior without charging a real payment method. See Apple’s StoreKit Sandbox guide.

It is easy to confuse this with iOS app sandboxing: iOS automatically isolates apps so they generally cannot read each other’s files or change the operating system. That security feature needs no setup and is not a way to test purchases. If you mean a game or another app called “Sandbox,” its instructions will be specific to that app.
What you need
- An active Apple Developer Program account and an app set up in App Store Connect.
- The Paid Applications Agreement active, and at least one In-App Purchase product configured if you are testing App Store-connected products.
- A Sandbox Apple Account created in App Store Connect.
- An iPhone running either a development-signed build or a TestFlight build. Developer Mode may be required for a development build.
- An internet connection for App Store-connected Sandbox tests.
For early development, StoreKit Testing in Xcode can simulate purchases locally without a Sandbox account or App Store server connection. It is useful for fast, repeatable tests, but does not replace end-to-end checks against Apple’s Sandbox infrastructure, including server notifications, storefront behavior, or TestFlight distribution.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Create a Sandbox Apple Account
- Sign in to App Store Connect.
- Open Users and Access, then select Sandbox.
- Choose Create Test Accounts if prompted, or select the + button.
- Enter the tester’s name, email address, password, and App Store country or region, then select Create.
The email address must not already be registered as an Apple Account or have been used for App Store or iTunes purchases. Email subaddressing with a plus sign (such as [email protected]) may work if your email provider supports it. Sandbox accounts are for testing; they cannot be used to sign in to the regular App Store or make real App Store purchases. Apple allows up to 10,000 Sandbox accounts per App Store Connect account. The account creation guide lists Account Holder, Admin, App Manager, and Developer as roles that can create them. Ask an Account Holder or Admin if you cannot access the Sandbox section.
Use Sandbox with a development build from Xcode
- If the iPhone requires it, enable Developer Mode. Connect the phone to Xcode and run the development-signed app on the device.
- Check that the app’s StoreKit purchase flow works and its product identifiers match the products in App Store Connect.
- Start a purchase in the app. You may be prompted to enter the Sandbox Apple Account credentials.
- After the first purchase attempt, open Settings > Developer > Sandbox Apple Account. Sign in if necessary, then tap the account and choose Manage to open its Sandbox settings.
For this In-App Purchase workflow, you do not need to sign out of the iPhone owner’s main Apple Account. The development build uses the separate Sandbox account for its test transaction. Apple documents the development-build workflow and the Developer settings path in its StoreKit testing instructions.

A successful test runs in Apple’s test environment, not as a real customer purchase. Apple’s documentation describes an environment indicator such as [Environment: Sandbox]. If the transaction appears to be using production, stop before entering payment information and check the build, account, and StoreKit configuration.

- Install the beta from TestFlight while you are signed in with your usual Apple Account.
- Open Settings, tap your Apple Account, and select Media & Purchases.
- Choose Sign Out from the pop-up menu. This signs out of Media & Purchases, not the whole device account.
- Return to Settings and open Developer > Sandbox Apple Account.
- Tap Sign In, enter the Sandbox account credentials, then reopen the TestFlight app and test the purchase.
If the production Apple Account is signed in under Media & Purchases instead, TestFlight purchases may be attributed to that production account rather than the Sandbox account. Signing out of Media & Purchases can also affect access to production-purchased content on the device; a dedicated test iPhone may be preferable for extended QA. Apple’s TestFlight purchase testing guide covers this workflow.
Manage test purchases, renewals, and storefronts
On iPhone, open Settings > Developer > Sandbox Apple Account > Manage. Depending on the setup, you can adjust subscription renewal speed, clear test purchase history, enable interrupted purchases, and configure certain subscription, offer, or Sandbox Test Family scenarios. Not every control is on the iPhone: create or delete Sandbox accounts, change a tester’s country or region, and create or delete Sandbox Test Families in App Store Connect. See Apple’s Sandbox account settings documentation.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

Reset purchase history
To retest an initial purchase or an introductory offer, clear the tester’s Sandbox history:
- On iPhone, go to Settings > Developer > Sandbox Apple Account > Manage and choose Clear Purchase History; or go to App Store Connect > Users and Access > Sandbox, select the tester, and choose Clear Purchase History.
- Sign out of the Sandbox account on the iPhone, then sign back in before testing again.
Clearing history affects test purchases, not real customer purchases, and can make the tester eligible to try introductory offers again. Clearing a large history may take several minutes or longer.

Understand accelerated subscription renewals
Sandbox subscriptions renew much faster than real subscriptions so you can test lifecycle behavior quickly. By default, a one-month subscription period lasts five minutes in Sandbox. The available hourly schedule includes these examples:
| Real subscription duration | Sandbox renewal interval on hourly schedule |
|---|---|
| 1 week | 15 minutes |
| 1 month | 1 hour |
| 2 months | 2 hours |
| 3 months | 3 hours |
| 6 months | 6 hours |
| 1 year | 12 hours |
These are test timings, not customer billing schedules. Sandbox auto-renewal continues for up to 12 renewals, then turns off on the thirteenth renewal attempt. You can use the accelerated renewals, interrupted-purchase settings, and other available test scenarios to check how the app handles renewals, billing issues, and entitlement changes.
Test a different storefront
A Sandbox tester can be associated with an App Store storefront; Apple says Sandbox supports 175 storefronts. In App Store Connect, open Users and Access > Sandbox, select the tester, change Country or Region, and save. Then sign out of the Sandbox account on the iPhone and sign back in to activate the changed storefront.

|---|---|---|
| Development-signed app | Quick debugging, logs, and transaction-flow iteration | Requires Xcode and signing; the Sandbox option may not appear until you attempt a purchase. |
| TestFlight | Release-like beta testing and QA without Xcode | Requires uploading a build; sign out of production Media & Purchases to use Sandbox controls. |

Why Sandbox may be missing or not working
- You cannot find “Sandbox Apple Account.” For a development build, first try a purchase; Apple may not expose the setting until then. Check Settings > Developer, not an older guide’s Settings > App Store path, and enable Developer Mode if required. For TestFlight, sign out specifically under Media & Purchases.
- The account will not sign in. Confirm it was created under the right App Store Connect team, recheck the credentials, and make sure you are entering them under Sandbox Apple Account, not the iPhone’s main Apple Account. The email cannot already be a regular Apple Account or have been used for App Store purchases. Apple warns that deleting a Sandbox tester permanently prevents its associated account and email from being reused for App Store testing or normal App Store purchases.
- The product is unavailable. Check the product ID spelling and capitalization, app bundle ID and developer team, product configuration and status, Paid Applications Agreement, storefront, and whether the build is using the intended StoreKit configuration. Product metadata changes can take up to an hour to reach Sandbox.
- The wrong account appears in the purchase flow. Confirm the Sandbox account is signed in under Developer settings. For TestFlight, also confirm you signed out under Media & Purchases. Do not proceed with a purchase if you cannot verify it is a test transaction.
- A changed storefront does not appear. Sign out of the Sandbox account on the iPhone and sign back in after changing its country or region in App Store Connect.
- An introductory offer cannot be tested again. Clear the Sandbox tester’s purchase history and sign back in. Sandbox history is separate from real purchase history.
- A subscription renews sooner than expected. That is normal in Sandbox. Check the configured renewal rate; accelerated test intervals do not describe production renewals.
- You believe a real payment is being requested. Stop. A correctly configured Sandbox transaction does not charge a real payment method. Verify that the app is a development-signed or TestFlight build and that the transaction is using Sandbox. Do not enter real payment details into a flow you believe is a Sandbox test.
Apple Pay Sandbox is a separate workflow
Apple Pay testing is not the same as StoreKit In-App Purchase testing. Apple’s Apple Pay Sandbox setup has separate requirements and test-card instructions; its account sign-in workflow can require signing out of the personal Apple Account at the device level and signing in with the Sandbox account as the device’s Apple Account. Do not apply those device-level steps to ordinary In-App Purchase testing. Follow Apple’s separate Apple Pay testing documentation.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Use a development-signed or TestFlight build—not an App Store production app.
- Create a Sandbox Apple Account in App Store Connect using an eligible email address.
- For a development build, attempt a purchase before looking for the Sandbox setting.
- Sign in at Settings > Developer > Sandbox Apple Account; for TestFlight, also sign out of production under Media & Purchases.
- Verify product IDs, agreement status, storefront, and test environment; never enter real payment details into an uncertain flow.
- Clear Sandbox purchase history when you need to repeat a first-purchase or introductory-offer test.
