Copy the interrobang here: ‽ Paste it into your message or document. Its Unicode code point is U+203D, but most phone keyboards do not offer a universal way to enter characters by code; copying it or setting up a text replacement is usually easiest.

Copy and paste is the most dependable quick option across phones and computers, although display still depends on the app and font.
What does ‽ mean?
The interrobang is one Unicode character named INTERROBANG, code point U+203D. It combines the effect of a question mark and an exclamation point, as in “You did what‽” You can also write “You did what?!” or “You did what!?”; the interrobang is a typographic alternative, not a required replacement.

Type it in Microsoft Word on Windows
Use the Unicode code
- Type 203D in the document.
- Immediately press Alt+X. Word converts the code into ‽.
Do not include the literal “U+” in the sequence. Where supported, pressing Alt+X again with the cursor after the character can switch between the character and its code. Microsoft documents symbol insertion and Unicode character codes in Word’s symbol-insertion guidance.
Use the Symbol menu
- Open the Insert tab.
- Choose Symbol or More Symbols.
- Find and select the interrobang, then choose Insert.
Menu labels vary by Word edition and platform. For Windows apps that do not support Word’s Alt+X conversion, open Character Map, search for “interrobang,” select it, and copy it. Avoid treating Alt+8253 as a universal Windows shortcut: traditional Alt codes can behave inconsistently between applications.

Type it on a Mac
Use Character Viewer for occasional use
- Open macOS Character Viewer.
- Search for interrobang.
- Double-click the result to insert it.
The picker’s shortcut and menu wording can vary with macOS version and keyboard settings.

Use Unicode Hex Input for repeated code entry
- Open System Settings, go to Keyboard, and find Input Sources.
- Add and switch to Unicode Hex Input.
- Hold Option and type 203D, then release Option.
The input source must be enabled and selected; Option plus 203D on a regular keyboard layout will not generally produce the character. See Unicode’s instructions for Unicode input methods.

Use it on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s mobile keyboard does not provide a universal built-in way to enter an arbitrary Unicode code point in hexadecimal. Copy and paste ‽ when you need it once. For regular use, add a text replacement: set the phrase to ‽ and choose a distinctive shortcut such as ;ib or ;interrobang. Find Text Replacement in the keyboard settings; the precise settings path can change between iOS and iPadOS releases.
Third-party keyboards may offer symbol lookup or custom shortcuts, but features differ. Unicode’s input-method guidance describes the lack of an official universal hexadecimal-entry method on iOS.

Use it on Android
Android keyboards and manufacturer interfaces vary, so there is no single shortcut that works on every phone. Copy and paste ‽ for one-off use. For frequent use, look in your keyboard app’s personal dictionary or text-shortcut settings and assign a shortcut such as ;ib to the phrase ‽. Menu names and steps depend on the keyboard, such as Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, or SwiftKey. Some layouts expose extra punctuation on a long press, but that is not universal.

Insert it in Google Docs
Google Docs does not have an established dedicated interrobang key combination. Copy and paste the character, or try Insert → Special characters and search for “interrobang” if the option is available in your current interface. You can also insert it using your operating system’s character picker or a text shortcut before returning to the document. Google’s shortcut references cover general Docs shortcuts, not a specific interrobang combination: Google Docs Editors Help and the Google Workspace Learning Center.
If the interrobang looks wrong
- It appears as an empty box or square: The active font or app may lack a visible glyph for U+203D. Try another font or app; if clarity matters, use ?! instead.
- It turns into two punctuation marks: An app, font, or input method may substitute it with ?! or !?. Those are similar in appearance and meaning, but they are two characters rather than the single interrobang.
- A keyboard sequence does nothing: Make sure the cursor is in an editable field, the correct input source is active, and the app supports that input method. Also check whether your shortcut requires a particular keyboard, such as a numeric keypad.
- Word leaves “203D” as text: Put the cursor immediately after the code and press Alt+X; enter 203D, not U+203D.
- Your phone keyboard has no interrobang key: That is normal; use copy and paste or a text replacement instead of searching for a universal hidden key.
Shortcuts can also vary with keyboard layout, external versus on-screen keyboards, and application handling. Microsoft notes that Word shortcut documentation uses a U.S. keyboard layout and may not map identically to other layouts: Word keyboard shortcuts.
When to use ?! instead
Use ?! when the reader’s device or the publishing font is uncertain, or when plain punctuation is preferable for accessibility and search. Assistive technologies, text-to-speech systems, and older software may handle unusual punctuation differently; behavior depends on the specific software and settings. For publication, check that the font and rendering pipeline display ‽ correctly.
