To sign in to Gmail on another computer, open mail.google.com, select Sign in, enter your Gmail address and password, and complete any verification Google requests. When you finish, select your profile picture and choose Sign out.
Gmail uses your Google Account sign-in, so there is no separate Gmail-only password. The same browser process works on Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, work computers, borrowed devices, and public computers.
What you need before signing in
- Your full Gmail address or Google Account username.
- Your password, unless you use a passkey or another sign-in method.
- Access to your phone, authenticator, security key, or backup method if Google requests additional verification.
- An internet connection and a browser that can run JavaScript and accept cookies normally.
Google chooses the sign-in challenge based on factors such as your account settings, device, location, and perceived risk. You may need only a password, or you may be asked for a Google prompt, code, passkey, or security key.

How to sign in to Gmail on another computer
- Open a web browser.
- Go directly to https://mail.google.com/. Check the address bar before entering credentials.
- Select Sign in if prompted.
- Enter your full Gmail address and select Next.
- Enter your password and select Next.
- Complete any identity check Google displays.
- Wait for your Gmail inbox to load.
You do not need to install the Gmail app to use Gmail on another computer. A supported web browser is enough. Workplace, school, hotel, or library networks may restrict Google services, however.

If 2-Step Verification is enabled
After entering your password, Google may ask you to approve a prompt on your phone or enter another verification method. Depending on your account, available options may include:
- A Google prompt in the Google or Gmail app.
- A text message or phone-based verification code.
- A code from an authenticator app.
- A passkey.
- A hardware security key.
- A backup code or another configured recovery method.
Approve the request or enter the requested code, then return to the browser and wait for Gmail to open. Google does not guarantee that a particular option, such as text messaging, will always appear. Work and school administrators may also restrict available methods. Do not disable 2-Step Verification simply to avoid an additional challenge; Google describes it as protection against someone signing in with a stolen password. Use a phone passkey on the other computer
If you have already set up a passkey, you may be able to sign in without typing your Google password:

- Enter your Gmail address.
- Select Try another way.
- Choose Use your passkey.
- Scan the QR code shown on the computer with the phone that stores your passkey.
- Turn on Bluetooth if Google requests it.
- Approve the sign-in using your phone’s fingerprint, face unlock, or screen PIN.
Google currently lists support for Windows 10 or newer, macOS Ventura or newer, ChromeOS 109 or newer, and browsers including Chrome 109 or newer, Safari 16 or newer, Edge 109 or newer, and Firefox 122 or newer. Requirements can change; see Google’s passkey documentation.

Do not create a passkey on a public, borrowed, hotel, school, or workplace computer. Anyone who can unlock a device containing that passkey may be able to access the account, even after you sign out.
If another Google account is already signed in
You do not always need to sign out of the existing account. On Gmail or another Google page:
- Select the profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Add account.
- Enter the other Gmail address and authenticate.
- Use the profile menu to switch between accounts.
Google supports simultaneous sign-in to multiple accounts, although the first account signed in may be treated as the default in some situations. On a shared computer, use a private window instead of adding your account to the normal browser session. Otherwise, account names, cookies, history, or other local traces may remain.
Use Gmail safely on a public or borrowed computer
On a computer you do not control, open a private or incognito window before visiting Gmail. Private browsing reduces locally stored history and session data, but it does not make a monitored, infected, or untrusted computer safe. A keylogger, malicious extension, or network monitoring system could still capture information.

While signing in:
- Check that the address is
https://mail.google.com/or an official Google sign-in page. - Do not save your password in the browser.
- Do not choose Don’t ask again on this computer, Remember me, or Stay signed in on a public device.
- Do not create a passkey on the computer.
- Do not install software or browser extensions to access Gmail.
When finished, sign out, close every private browser window, and do not leave downloaded files, screenshots, or printed messages behind. If you used a normal browser window, sign out and consider clearing cookies and cache; deleting history alone may not end the active account session. Google explains these precautions in its guidance for using an account on someone else’s device.
Should you use “Don’t ask again on this computer”?
Use that option only on a computer you personally control and trust. It relies on browser cookies to remember the trusted-device choice. Google may ask for verification again if cookies are disabled or automatically deleted, and the choice applies separately to different computers and browsers. Never use it on a library, hotel, school, workplace, or borrowed computer. See Google’s trusted-computer guidance.
How to sign out of Gmail
- Open Gmail or another Google page.
- Select your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Sign out, or choose Sign out of all accounts if that is the displayed option.
If several accounts were active, signing out of all accounts ends the Google sessions in that browser. Remove an account is different: it removes the account from the browser’s sign-in page but does not delete the Google Account. To remove a listed account, sign out, select Remove an account, and then select Remove beside the account. Google’s labels can vary by browser, language, and account type.
Forgot to sign out? Sign out remotely
- Open myaccount.google.com.
- Go to Security & sign-in.
- Under Your devices, select Manage all devices.
- Select the computer or session.
- Choose Sign out.
You can also review devices at google.com/devices. If multiple sessions have the same device name, sign out of every matching session when necessary. Device times can sometimes look unfamiliar because connected apps such as Gmail or Calendar update a session later.

If you see a device you genuinely do not recognize, sign it out, change your Google Account password, review recent security activity, check recovery phone numbers and email addresses, and review your 2-Step Verification methods and passkeys. For a work or school account, contact the administrator as well. See Google’s device-review instructions.

You forgot your password
Use Google’s official recovery page: accounts.google.com/signin/recovery. Do not give your password or verification code to a third-party “Gmail recovery” service or helper.
You do not receive a Google prompt
- Check that the phone is connected to the internet.
- Confirm that the phone is signed in to the same Google Account.
- Check the Google or Gmail app for the prompt.
- Select Try another way.
- Use an authenticator code, backup code, passkey, security key, or another configured method.
Do not repeatedly request codes if delivery is delayed. The available alternatives depend on your account configuration.
The browser keeps asking for verification
This can happen on a new computer, from an unusual location, when cookies are blocked or deleted, in private browsing, or when Google detects a potentially risky sign-in. It can also reflect a work or school administrator’s policy. Complete the requested verification rather than disabling account security.

The passkey is unavailable
Confirm that the phone contains the passkey, is unlocked, and has Bluetooth enabled when using it with another computer. Check operating-system and browser compatibility, then select Try another way to use a password or another configured method.
Gmail does not open
Check the internet connection and address, update the browser, and try a private window as a diagnostic step. A school, workplace, hotel, or library network may block Google services. Private browsing can help identify cookie or extension problems, but it does not make a suspicious computer trustworthy.
You see someone else’s Gmail account
Do not enter your credentials into the existing inbox. Sign out of that account or open a private window and start a fresh sign-in. After signing out, use Remove an account if your account name remains listed on the sign-in page.
It is a work or school account
Google Workspace administrators can control sign-in requirements, passkeys, 2-Step Verification, and recovery options. If a standard option is unavailable, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy.
Password or passkey: which should you use?
A password with 2-Step Verification works on more computers and does not require passkey support, but it requires entering a password and may require your phone or backup method. A phone passkey avoids typing the password on the other computer and is designed to resist phishing, but it requires a previously configured passkey, a compatible phone and browser, Bluetooth in some cases, and access to the unlocked phone.
For a one-time login on a public computer, a private window plus an existing verification method is safer than creating a new passkey or trusting the device. No paid service is required to access a personal @gmail.com account from another computer.
