Go to docs.google.com, select Sign in if prompted, and use your Google Account. Google Docs has no separate Docs-only password, and you do not need a Gmail inbox specifically. After signing in, choose a document from the Docs home screen or open the link someone shared with you.
Sign in to Google Docs on a computer
- Open docs.google.com.
- If you are not already signed in, select Sign in. The control is usually at the upper right, though the layout can vary.
- Enter the email address or phone number for your Google Account, then select Next.
- Enter your password, use a passkey, or complete the verification step Google requests. The prompts can vary by device and account settings; Google describes the standard sign-in flow in its sign-in help.
- When the Docs home screen appears, select an existing document or choose a blank document.
If Docs opens without asking you to sign in, a Google Account is already active in that browser. Check which one before opening a private or shared file.
Sign in on Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Install and open the official Google Docs app, or open a shared document link in a mobile browser.
- Choose a Google Account already on the device, or use the app’s option to add another account.
- Follow the sign-in and verification prompts, then open a document from the app’s home screen or the shared link.
On Android, account switching is documented as Docs app → Menu → email address → choose the account. The iPhone and iPad app layout may differ by version, but sign-in still uses a Google Account. See Google’s Android account-switching instructions.

Use the Google Account that you want associated with your documents—or, when opening someone else’s file, the exact account that was granted access. That account could be a personal Gmail account, a Google Account set up with another eligible email address, or a work or school Google Workspace account. Gmail is not a requirement, but a non-Gmail address does not automatically become a Google Account; use Google’s account signup page to check current setup options.

Basic personal use of Docs generally does not require a paid Google Workspace subscription. Workspace is intended for organizations that need managed accounts, administration, security, shared resources, or business features; its availability and capabilities depend on the organization and plan.
Switch accounts when Docs opens the wrong one
On a computer
In Google Docs, select the profile photo or email address at the upper right, then choose the intended account. Docs may open that account in a new window. Google allows multiple accounts to be signed in, but the default account can affect some behavior. For frequent separation of personal, school, and work activity, use distinct Chrome profiles rather than relying on a single mixed session. See Google’s account-switching guidance.

On Android
Open the Docs app, tap Menu, tap the current email address, and select the other account. On iPhone or iPad, use the account control in the app; labels can vary with the app version.

Signing in proves which account you are using; it does not grant access to every file. If you see Request access or an access error, check these possibilities:

- Wrong account: The owner invited a different email address. Switch to that account and reopen the link.
- Restricted sharing: The owner may have limited the file to named people or an organization. Ask the owner to share it with the email address you are using.
- Work or school policy: The organization may block external files or sharing. Contact its IT desk or administrator.
- Unavailable link or file: The link may be incomplete or outdated, or the document may have been moved, deleted, or had access revoked. Ask the owner for a current link and permission.
Recover a forgotten Google Account or password
Use Google Account Help and its official recovery route. Choose Forgot email? if you cannot identify the account, or Forgot password? when you cannot sign in with the password. Follow the identity checks Google presents; these may ask for a recovery phone or email, a previously used password, or a familiar device or location. Recovery is not guaranteed if Google cannot verify ownership. Do not give your password to third-party “Docs recovery” services.
When Google asks for a verification step
Depending on your account and device, Google may ask you to approve a Google prompt, use a passkey, enter an authenticator-app code, receive a text or voice code, use a security key or backup code, or complete another challenge. Passkeys can use a device’s fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock where supported; the available methods and prompts vary. Google explains two-step verification and passkeys.

Never share a Google verification code or backup code with another person. If you are concerned about losing access, set up more than one recovery or verification method while you can still sign in.
Sign out on a shared computer
- Select the Google profile picture or account control.
- Choose Sign out or Sign out of all accounts.
- If the sign-in page offers a saved account, remove it if you do not want it left on that device.
Do not leave your account signed in on a library, school, hotel, or other shared computer. If two-step verification is enabled, make sure your recovery and backup methods are available before signing out; see Google’s guidance for multiple accounts.

Use Docs offline (after setting it up)
Offline access is separate from signing in and must generally be configured while connected to the internet. On a computer, Google’s documented setup uses Chrome or Microsoft Edge, not private or incognito browsing; the Google Docs Offline extension may be required. In Google Drive, open Settings → Settings and turn on Offline. You can also make an individual file available offline from its menu or with File → Make available offline. Follow Google’s offline setup instructions.
- Enable offline access for the account you intend to use. Only one account per browser profile can have Docs offline enabled; separate browser profiles can keep offline accounts apart.
- Turning on offline access does not automatically save every document locally. Choose files to make available offline and allow enough device storage.
- Changes made offline need an internet connection to synchronize later.
- A school or employer administrator may disable offline access for managed accounts.
Troubleshoot a sign-in loop or a Docs app that will not load
Browser sign-in keeps looping or the page will not load
- Confirm that your internet connection works and try opening Docs in a current browser.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that may interfere with Google sign-in, and check that cookies and JavaScript are allowed for Google services.
- Try a private window only as a diagnostic test for a browser-session problem; it is not a fix for offline Docs setup.
- Try the correct account in a separate browser profile. If several Google services are failing, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard to distinguish a service incident from a local browser issue.
Mobile app remains on the sign-in screen
Check the device’s internet connection, confirm the intended account is available on the device, update the Docs app and operating system, then restart the app and device. On Android, clearing the app cache in system settings is a possible later troubleshooting step; avoid clearing storage unless you understand it can remove local app data or offline copies. On iPhone or iPad, reinstalling may reset local app state, while cloud documents remain associated with the account.
A school or work account says access is restricted
The administrator may have turned Docs off or restricted sharing or offline access. Google Workspace administrators can control availability of Docs and other editor apps; see Google Workspace’s administrator guidance. Contact your school’s IT desk or employer administrator rather than repeatedly changing a personal account password.
