You cannot detach an Xbox profile from its Microsoft account and move it intact to another Microsoft account. Your gamertag, Gamerscore, achievements, game progress, digital purchases, subscriptions and account balance stay with the Microsoft account used to sign in to Xbox.
What you should do depends on what “separate” means: remove the profile from one console, change the email address while keeping the same account, create a new Xbox identity, or close the entire Microsoft account.
First, identify what you want to separate

Xbox account versus Microsoft account
“Xbox account” is usually informal shorthand for the Xbox profile attached to a Microsoft account. The Microsoft account is the underlying sign-in identity used for Xbox and other Microsoft services. Microsoft explains this relationship in its guide to Microsoft accounts.
- Microsoft account: The underlying personal account, password and security information.
- Xbox profile: The Xbox-facing identity associated with that account.
- Gamertag: Your public Xbox name.
- Email address: A sign-in alias or security contact; changing it does not necessarily create a new account.
- Console profile: The account sign-in stored locally on a particular Xbox.
Removing a console profile is therefore not the same as unlinking, transferring or deleting the Microsoft account.

If you only want to remove the account from an Xbox
Use this option when selling, lending or giving away a console, or when you want to stop an account from automatically appearing on that device.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Remove accounts.
- Choose the Microsoft account or Xbox profile.
- Select Remove.
Menu wording can vary after system updates, but the current Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S path follows this general structure.
This removes the account from that console only. It does not delete the Microsoft account, gamertag, purchases, subscriptions or cloud data. You can sign in again later or add the account to another Xbox.

Before selling or giving away the console
Removing the profile alone is not enough if the console is leaving your possession. Use the console’s Reset console process and choose the option that removes personal data. Also remove saved payment methods from the Microsoft account separately, then review your account’s devices, security activity and subscriptions.
If you want to change the email address
If your real goal is to stop using an old, school, work or former partner’s email address, do not create a new Xbox account. Add a new email alias to the same Microsoft account.
Microsoft says aliases share the same account, password, contacts, subscriptions, settings and Xbox access. This preserves your existing Xbox profile and purchases. Start at Microsoft’s How you sign in page:

- Sign in and select Add email.
- Add a new Outlook.com address or an existing address from another provider, if eligible.
- Verify the address if Microsoft asks you to.
- Select Make primary beside the new alias.
- After testing the new sign-in, remove the old alias only if you are certain it is safe to do so.
Before removing the old alias, confirm that the new address works, recovery information is current, and important devices and services recognize the account. Be particularly careful with Microsoft-domain addresses: some removed aliases cannot be restored.
This changes how you sign in; it does not create a separate Xbox identity.
If you need a completely separate Xbox identity
Create or use another Microsoft account. On Xbox, open the profile menu, choose Add or switch, select Add new, and sign in with the other account.
The second account will receive its own Xbox profile. It will not inherit the original account’s:
- Gamertag
- Gamerscore or achievements
- Cloud saves or game progress
- Digital games and downloadable content
- Microsoft account balance
- Xbox subscriptions
- Purchase history or account history
Microsoft’s policy on combining Microsoft accounts says personal accounts cannot be merged or combined, and these Xbox assets cannot be transferred between them. You can use two accounts side by side, but that is not a merger.

Do not rely on console-sharing arrangements as a permanent transfer of ownership. The safe rule is that purchases remain associated with the Microsoft account that bought them.

If you want to delete the Xbox profile
There is no ordinary Xbox-only deletion that removes the Xbox identity while leaving the rest of the Microsoft account intact. The destructive route is to close the entire Microsoft account.
Microsoft’s account-closure process generally works as follows:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account closure page.
- Verify the account if prompted.
- Confirm that the displayed account is the correct one.
- Read and acknowledge the warnings.
- Choose a 30-day or 60-day reopening period.
- Select a reason and choose Mark account for closure.
During the selected reopening period, you can generally reopen the account by signing in and completing verification. After that period expires, Microsoft says the account and its data and content are permanently deleted. That can include the Xbox gamertag, Gamerscore, subscriptions, purchases and other Microsoft services connected to the account. See Microsoft’s account-reopening guidance before taking this step.

A gamertag alone is not enough to identify or recover an account. If preserving purchases and progress matters, find the original account before creating or deleting anything.
- Check Microsoft purchase receipts and subscription emails.
- Try email addresses previously used to create or sign in to Xbox.
- Check a Windows device already signed in under Settings > Accounts.
- Use Microsoft’s account-identification guidance and sign-in recovery tools.
- Confirm which account owns the relevant game or subscription before abandoning the old account.
Other common cases
You only want to change the gamertag
Changing a gamertag is different from moving an Xbox profile. On Xbox One, Microsoft documents the path as Xbox button > System > Settings > Personalization > My profile > Customize profile, then select the gamertag and edit it. Availability, eligibility and any applicable charge should be checked in the current Xbox interface.
You want to remove a parent’s or partner’s account
With the owner’s permission, remove that account from the console and add your own Microsoft account. This solves a local sign-in or privacy issue, but it does not transfer ownership of games or subscriptions. Do not change another person’s recovery details or delete their account.

You are changing country or region
Changing region is not a way to separate accounts. Microsoft warns that regional changes can affect balances, subscriptions, games, apps and media, and account funds do not transfer between regions. Consult Microsoft’s country and region guidance.
You use a work or school account
Work and school identities are administered differently from personal Microsoft accounts. An organization may control access, recovery and account policies; do not assume that such an account can be converted into or merged with a personal Xbox account.

No supported account-combination process moves a personal Xbox profile, gamertag, progress, purchases or balance to another Microsoft account. Support may help with account access or billing issues after ownership is validated, but it cannot simply merge the accounts or manually transfer the profile.
Safe order of operations
- Decide whether you need device removal, an email change, a new identity or full deletion.
- Identify the Microsoft account that owns the gamertag and purchases.
- Back up or review anything important before making changes.
- Use an alias if you want to keep the existing Xbox identity.
- Create a second account only if you accept that it starts separately.
- Use console reset—not just profile removal—when selling the Xbox.
- Reserve account closure for deleting the entire Microsoft identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unlink my Xbox profile from my Microsoft account?
No. The Xbox profile is associated with the Microsoft account used to sign in, and it cannot be detached and transferred intact to another personal Microsoft account.
Can I move my gamertag to another email?
You can add a new email alias to the same Microsoft account and make it primary. You cannot move the gamertag to a different Microsoft account.
Can I merge two Xbox accounts?
No. Microsoft does not support merging personal Microsoft accounts or transferring their Xbox profiles, progress, purchases and balances.

Will removing my account from the Xbox delete it?
No. It removes the account from that console only. The Microsoft account and its Xbox data remain available elsewhere.
Will I lose my games if I change my email?
No, if you add or replace an alias on the same Microsoft account. The purchases remain with that account.
Can Microsoft Support transfer my game progress?
No supported process transfers Xbox progress, Gamerscore, achievements or purchases between personal Microsoft accounts.

Not as a clean separation. Closing the Microsoft account is broader and can permanently delete the Xbox profile and other connected Microsoft data after the reopening period.
