To remove Gmail from a computer without deleting your email account, sign out of Google, then remove the address from Google’s sign-in screen if it still appears. If you also connected the account to Chrome Sync, a browser profile, or a desktop mail app, disconnect it there separately. These steps remove local access; they do not delete your Gmail account.
Do not choose “Delete Gmail” unless you mean to permanently remove the Gmail service and its messages.
Choose the kind of removal you need

Remove Gmail from any browser
- Open Gmail or another Google page.
- Select your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Select Sign out. If Google offers only Sign out of all accounts, use that option.
- If the Google account chooser appears, select Remove an account.
- Select Remove beside the account you no longer want listed.
Removing an account from Google’s sign-in page only removes its saved listing in that browser; it does not delete the Google Account or Gmail messages. Google’s instructions are at Remove an account from the sign-in page. If you used the account in multiple browsers, repeat these steps in each one.
If you want to keep other accounts signed in, remove the unwanted account from the chooser, then sign back in to the accounts you still use. Google may require signing out of all accounts before it shows the removal option.

Remove the account from Chrome
A Gmail session and a Chrome profile are different things. Signing out of Gmail ends the website session; a Chrome profile may still be connected to the same Google Account for Sync, bookmarks, passwords, and other browser settings.
- In Chrome, select the Chrome profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Sign out of Chrome. If Sync controls are shown instead, choose Turn off to stop Sync and sign out.
- If Chrome presents Remove account from Chrome, select it when you want to disconnect that Google Account from Chrome.
Labels and available options can vary with Chrome version and account state. See Google’s current Chrome sign-in and Sync guidance.
If you want to erase the entire Chrome profile from the computer, open Chrome’s profile menu, manage profiles, and delete the relevant profile. Be careful: deleting a profile removes locally stored bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings from that computer. Back up anything you need first. This does not delete the Google Account itself. See Google’s instructions for removing a Chrome profile.
Remove Gmail from Edge, Firefox, or another browser
Gmail is a website account, not a special Firefox or Edge account. Sign out of Google first, remove the address from Google’s account chooser if it remains, then clear Google cookies or site data if you need to end saved web sessions on a shared computer.

In Microsoft Edge, the current route for clearing data is Settings and more → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data → Choose what to clear → Clear now. Select cookies and site data; clearing browsing history alone may not sign you out. Edge lets you choose data types, including saved passwords, so check selections carefully. See Microsoft’s Edge privacy and browsing-data help. If Sync is on, understand whether the data you select is also synced before clearing it.
In Firefox, clear Google cookies/site data using Firefox’s privacy controls. Firefox’s Mozilla Account is separate: signing out of it is not the same as signing out of Google. Mozilla explains how to sign out and optionally remove synced Firefox data in its Firefox Sync guidance. For Safari or another browser, use the same principle: sign out of Google, remove the account from the chooser, and clear Google site data if needed. Exact menu names vary by browser version.
Clearing cookies generally ends website sessions but also removes site preferences. It does not necessarily remove saved passwords, browser profiles, files downloaded to the computer, or data held by mail applications.

If you added Gmail to Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or another desktop email app, removing it from the browser will not remove it from that app. Use the app’s account settings to remove the Gmail account. This usually removes the account configuration from the app, but do not assume it erases every downloaded message, attachment, archive, or local data file. The exact steps depend on the app and operating system.

If you no longer have the computer
- Open your Google Account and go to Security.
- Under Your devices, select Manage all devices.
- Select the computer or session you no longer use, then choose Sign out or the removal option shown.
- If the computer may have saved your password, change your Google Account password and review recent security activity.
Google’s device sign-out instructions explain how to remove access from a device you no longer possess. Remote sign-out ends account access; it is not a remote wipe and does not guarantee removal of every local file or cached message. If Chrome access is the concern, Google also describes removing Chrome’s access in its Chrome account guidance; treat that as an additional Chrome-specific option, not a substitute for checking your Google Account devices.
Before selling, returning, or giving away the computer
Signing out is not the same as preparing a computer for a new owner. Before transferring it:
- Sign out of Google in every browser and remove the account from each sign-in chooser.
- Disconnect browser profiles and remove saved Google passwords or passkeys if appropriate.
- Sign out of other accounts and apps, including mail, cloud storage, and password managers.
- Back up files you want to keep.
- Use the computer maker’s or operating system’s reset or erase procedure before handing it over.
You can also clear cookies and site data to end web sessions, but that alone is not a secure device erase. Google notes that clearing cookies and cache can sign you out while also removing website settings; see Google’s guidance for clearing account information from a computer.
If you want to delete Gmail itself
This is a destructive account change, not a way to remove Gmail from one computer. If you want to keep the rest of your Google Account, Google’s desktop instructions are:

- Open Gmail, select your profile picture, then choose Manage your Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy and find the controls for data from apps and services.
- Choose the option to delete a Google service, and sign in again if prompted.
- Select Delete beside Gmail.
- Provide an alternate email address that is not a Gmail address and follow the verification instructions.
Until you verify the alternate address, Gmail is not removed. Google says Gmail messages and settings are deleted after 30 days, and the address can no longer send or receive mail; recovery may be possible for some time, but is not guaranteed indefinitely. Review Google’s current instructions for deleting Gmail from a Google Account before proceeding. If the address is supplied through work, school, or another organization, contact its administrator first.
Deleting Gmail does not necessarily delete the entire Google Account. Deleting the whole account also affects services and data such as Drive, Calendar, Photos, Play purchases, and subscriptions. See Google’s explanation of deleting a Google Account.
If the account still appears
- It appears on Google’s sign-in screen: Sign out first, then use Remove an account; signing out alone may leave the address listed.
- Gmail opens automatically: Check for an active session in another browser or browser profile, restored tabs, or a desktop mail app.
- It signs back in: Check Chrome or another browser’s Sync/profile connection, saved passwords, and passkeys.
- Clearing history did not help: History and cookies are separate. Clear cookies/site data, not just history.
- You deleted a Chrome profile and lost data: Profile deletion can remove local bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings. Restore from a backup or synced copy if available.
Verify the removal
- Open a new browser window and visit Gmail. Confirm it does not open as the account you removed.
- Open Google’s account chooser and confirm the address is no longer listed in that browser.
- Check browser profiles, saved passwords or passkeys, and installed mail apps if you want to remove local sign-in traces.
- If you are handing off the computer, perform a full device reset or erase after backing up your files.
Repeat the check in every browser where you used the account. A missing Google web session does not by itself prove that the address, saved credentials, or local mail data are gone from every part of the computer.
