Stop launching the game and do not accept a Steam Cloud conflict yet. First copy any save files you can find—including files on an old computer—somewhere safe. Then check Steam Cloud, local save folders, and system backups. Steam can restore progress only if a usable copy still exists.
Protect every remaining copy first
Steam Cloud synchronizes files between devices; it is not a guaranteed archive of earlier versions. A new or blank save can therefore create a conflict with the save you want, and the wrong choice may replace a useful copy. Valve describes Cloud synchronization and conflicts in its Steam Cloud FAQ and Steamworks Cloud documentation.
- Exit the game without saving again. Do not choose an upload, download, local-files, or cloud-files option in a conflict prompt yet.
- Copy any candidate save folders to a separate location, such as an external drive. Work from copies, not the only original.
- If the old computer is available, avoid opening the game there until its save folder is copied. Pause synchronization if Steam is repeatedly replacing files.
There is no universal Steam recovery switch that freezes all games’ cloud data. Preserve the files first, then decide which copy to keep.

Check whether the game actually syncs saves
Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for Steam Cloud support. You can also check the game’s Library entry under Properties for its Cloud synchronization setting, and check Steam’s global Cloud setting. The exact labels can vary with the Steam client.

Cloud support does not mean every kind of progress is uploaded. Developers choose which files to synchronize, so a game may sync settings or profile data but leave saves on the computer. A Cloud indicator also does not establish that saves transfer between Windows, macOS, Linux, and SteamOS; cross-platform behavior depends on the game’s configuration.
Try normal Cloud synchronization if the cloud copy should be right
Use this route if your last good session was on another computer, that computer is unavailable, or you have reason to believe Steam already has the correct save.
- Sign in to the same Steam account that played the game.
- In the game’s Properties, confirm Cloud synchronization is enabled for that game; also check Steam’s global Cloud setting.
- Connect to the internet, exit Steam completely, then reopen it.
- Wait for the game’s synchronization to finish before launching it.
- Open the game and inspect all save slots, profiles, characters, campaigns, autosaves, and other in-game save lists.
If the game still starts from the beginning, do not keep playing in the hope that progress will reappear. Check the old device and local folders next. The game may have synced configuration without saves, loaded a different profile, or failed to synchronize the desired files.
Resolve a Cloud conflict without guessing
Do not choose a version solely because Steam calls it “local” or “cloud,” or because one timestamp is later. Steam says the more recently modified version is often the right one, but an offline session can delay synchronization, and a game may rewrite metadata or create a blank save after a crash.

- Record the dates and file sizes shown for both versions.
- Relate those details to your play history: which computer was used for the last successful session, and when?
- If possible, copy the local save folder before resolving the prompt.
- Select the version that matches the progress you want, then let synchronization finish.
- Launch the game and verify the save. Keep the alternative copy until the recovered progress has been tested.
Download available Cloud files manually
Steam’s remote-storage page lets you inspect files available for your account. Sign in at Steam Remote Storage, find the game, and download candidate files before making changes. A game-specific page follows this pattern: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=APPID. Replace APPID with the game’s Steam AppID; the page requires the correct account.
- Save downloaded files outside the Steam folder so they remain untouched.
- Find the game’s actual save directory in the developer’s support material or by inspecting its local files. A download is not necessarily meant for the installation directory, and its name or format may be specific to the game.
- Back up the current save folder, then place a copy of the downloaded file in the correct location while preserving the expected folder structure and filename.
- If Cloud immediately replaces the restored file, temporarily disable Cloud for the game, test the local copy, and re-enable synchronization only after identifying the version that should become authoritative.
Steamworks documents possible save roots such as Documents, AppData, Saved Games, macOS Application Support, Linux home/data directories, and the installation directory. The developer’s setup determines the destination, so downloading a file does not guarantee it can be restored as-is.
Find local saves and Steam’s Cloud files
The Steam userdata folder is a useful place to inspect local Cloud data, but it is not the universal location for a game’s working save. Typical Steam installation paths are:

Under userdata, look for the relevant Steam account folder and then a folder named with the game’s AppID, often containing a remote directory and a remotecache.vdf file. Valve uses AppID 570 for Dota 2 as an example. Preserve the whole candidate folder before examining or moving individual files.

Also search the locations where games commonly keep ordinary saves:
- Windows: Documents, Saved Games, and the game’s folders in
AppDataLocal,AppDataLocalLow, orAppDataRoaming. - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/and the game’s documented save location. - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/, the home directory, and the game’s documented location. - Any system: the game’s installation folder, if the developer stores saves there.
Search by game or developer name and inspect recently modified files, save-like extensions such as .sav, .dat, or .json, and multiple similarly named files. These are clues, not proof that a file is a usable save.
Use the Cloud log as a location clue
Steam’s cloud_log.txt can show which paths Cloud accessed. Its usual locations are:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogscloud_log.txt - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt
A logged path can help narrow the search, but it does not prove the file is intact or that the game will accept it.

Recover from an old computer
An old computer may contain the newest save even if Steam’s cloud copy is stale. Copy the complete save folder to a separate drive before reconnecting that computer or opening the game. Once the copy is safe, reconnect Steam and let it synchronize; if the old save is the desired version, it may upload and then download to the new computer. Verify progress in-game before removing the backup.
If Cloud is unsupported or was disabled, transfer the copied folder to the new computer only after finding the game’s correct save location and checking any account, platform, or version requirements. Valve recommends checking the old device when a save may still be present there, but Steam cannot guarantee recovery if it is gone.

Search the old computer and current computer using the locations above and the game’s own support information. If you find no copy, check backups that were already configured:

- Windows File History or OneDrive version history.
- macOS Time Machine.
- A backup drive or other system backup.
- In-game autosaves, alternate profiles, backup saves, and other save slots.
Steam’s Backup Feature is intended for backing up and restoring game installation files; do not assume it contains the game’s separate user save data. See Valve’s Steam Backup Feature instructions for what that feature covers. If you cannot identify a game’s save format or location, contact the game’s developer, who may be able to explain the game’s behavior.

If a save file exists but the game will not load it
Keep the original untouched and test a duplicate. A file can be present yet unusable because its destination, filename, folder structure, account, profile, platform, game version, or required mods and DLC do not match. Some saves are encrypted or tied to a user ID; others may be damaged.
- Exit the game and temporarily disable Cloud for it if synchronization is replacing your test copy.
- Restore the original folder structure and filename unless the developer specifies otherwise.
- Check that you are using the expected Steam account, game version, platform, mods, and DLC.
- Test the save in-game. If it loads, create a new in-game save and exit normally before re-enabling Cloud.
- If it remains unreadable, try another preserved copy, autosave, or backup, or ask the developer about repair options.
Renaming a downloaded Cloud file is not a general repair method. Whether a manual restore works depends on the game’s format and implementation.
When recovery may not be possible
If the game did not sync saves and no copy remains on an old device, in a local folder, an operating-system backup, an in-game backup, or another backup, there may be nothing to restore. Valve says Steam Support generally cannot recover lost save data or resolve every Cloud conflict. Contact the game developer about game-specific options, but do not assume a deleted save can be reconstructed.

Reduce the risk of losing progress again
- Keep Steam Cloud enabled where the game supports it, while remembering it synchronizes developer-selected files rather than guaranteeing historical versions.
- Make periodic manual backups of the entire save folder and retain dated copies.
- Before a major update, mod change, computer migration, or reinstall, copy the save folder somewhere outside Steam.
- After an offline session or a Cloud conflict, preserve both versions before choosing which to synchronize.
- For a move between Windows, macOS, Linux, or SteamOS, check the developer’s cross-platform save guidance before assuming the same files transfer.
