Steam does not provide a reliable supported switch that lets a game keep running while excluding that session from its playtime. You can hide hours from other users, stop idle time by fully exiting the game, or use Offline Mode in limited circumstances. However, Offline Mode is not a guaranteed way to prevent playtime from being recorded or to bypass Steam’s refund timer.
First, identify what you want to prevent
“Do not count hours” can mean several different things:
- Stop the game’s library playtime counter from increasing.
- Prevent friends from seeing your hours.
- Avoid adding idle time while a game is paused or minimized.
- Test a game without risking Steam’s refund limit.
- Remove hours that have already been recorded.
Steam handles these goals differently. Privacy settings control what other people can see; they are not documented as a way to disable Steam’s internal playtime tracking.

Hide total playtime from your profile
Steam’s privacy controls treat game details as including owned and wishlisted games, achievements, and playtime. They also provide a separate option for hiding total playtime.

- Open Steam and go to your profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Adjust Game details to the visibility level you want.
- Look for the option equivalent to Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details.
Steam’s labels can change between client versions, so look specifically for the Game details and total playtime controls. These settings hide information from other users; they do not prove that Steam has stopped recording it internally. Steam’s profile privacy help explains the broader visibility controls.
Hide one game with Private Games
If only one title is the problem, mark it as private:
- Open Library.
- Open the game’s library page.
- Select the game’s gear or three-dot Settings menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark as Private.
Valve says a private game hides its ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity from other people. See the Steam announcement for the feature’s scope. Making a game private is a visibility measure, not a documented playtime-disable switch.

Steam does not reliably distinguish active play from a game that is paused, minimized, sitting at a menu, or waiting in the background. The safest supported procedure is to end the session completely:
- Save your progress.
- Quit through the game’s own menu where possible.
- Wait until Steam’s library page changes from Stop or Running back to Play.
- Close any external launcher the game uses, such as EA App, Ubisoft Connect, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- On Windows, check Task Manager; on macOS, check Activity Monitor; on Linux or SteamOS, use the relevant process monitor. Confirm that the game process has ended.
- If Steam still shows the game as running, restart the Steam client.
Closing the game window may not be enough when a secondary launcher or game process remains active. Minimizing the window is also not a reliable way to stop playtime.

Steam Deck suspend
Suspending a game is not the same as quitting it. A suspended game can produce unexpected playtime behavior when it resumes, and community reports describe suspended Steam Deck sessions appearing as counted game time. This is anecdotal rather than a universal Valve guarantee, but if accurate hours matter, choose the game’s Exit Game option instead of relying on suspend.
Does Steam Offline Mode stop hours from counting?
Not reliably enough to treat it as a playtime loophole. Offline Mode removes the active Steam Network connection and may prevent immediate synchronization in some circumstances, but Valve does not promise that every offline session will remain permanently absent from every playtime system.
To prepare Offline Mode, Steam’s official instructions require you to:
- Start Steam while connected to the internet.
- Make sure Remember me is enabled at login.
- Update the game completely.
- Launch the game once online to complete setup and confirm that it works.
- Close the game.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Security and ensure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- From the main Steam window, choose Steam > Go Offline.
Offline Mode has important limitations:
- Online-dependent Steam features are unavailable.
- Games requiring an active internet connection may not launch.
- Games that depend on an external launcher may not work offline.
- Updates will not arrive until Steam goes online again.
- Stored login information is required.
- Steam recommends closing the client normally rather than force-quitting it so offline information is preserved.
Therefore, Offline Mode can be useful for playing a compatible game without a live Steam connection, but it should not be described as a guaranteed method of keeping all playtime out of Steam’s records.
Do offline hours count toward Steam refunds?
Yes. Valve’s refund policy generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase when the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve explicitly says the playtime calculation includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime.

That means a hidden profile number is not the same as ignored refund playtime. Do not use Offline Mode on the assumption that it protects the two-hour limit.

Valve also states that an approved refund does not remove existing playtime or achievements from a Steam Community Profile.
Can a launch option disable Steam playtime?
No documented, supported launch option disables playtime tracking. Steam’s launch-options documentation describes options for changing startup behavior or enabling game features, not for excluding a session from Steam’s playtime system.
There is no dependable Steam command that means “run this game but do not count the hours.”

Steam does not provide a documented self-service playtime reset. You can hide the total or mark an individual game private, but those actions do not establish that the underlying hours have been deleted.

Do not assume Steam Support will manually reset the counter. Privacy controls are the practical supported option when the goal is to keep the number away from other users.
What about non-Steam games?
Manually added non-Steam shortcuts can behave differently depending on the Steam client version, platform, and type of entry. Community reports have described changing playtime behavior for some non-Steam games, but the reports are inconsistent and do not establish a universal rule.
Do not assume that every non-Steam shortcut is tracked—or that none of them are. If the hours matter, check the specific entry after closing it and avoid relying on a shortcut as a guaranteed tracking workaround.
Should you use a playtime spoofer or idling tool?
No. Third-party tools that simulate gameplay or manipulate playtime are not a normal solution to a privacy problem. Valve’s Subscriber Agreement prohibits faking gameplay statistics, including playtime, and prohibits unauthorized software, scripts, bots, and automation interacting with Steam.
Such tools can also create account-security risks or conflict with individual games. They should not be treated as a safe or supported way to freeze the counter.
Choose the approach that matches your goal

Bottom line
Steam cannot reliably separate “active play” from “the game is open,” and it has no supported per-game switch that permanently excludes a running session from playtime. Hide the hours if privacy is the goal, fully exit the game and its launchers to prevent idle accumulation, and use Offline Mode only with its connection and refund limitations in mind.
