On an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Controller Vibration, then select Controller Vibration to turn it on. Select it again to turn it off. The controller you use to enable the setting should give a brief confirmation vibration, and the setting applies to all paired controllers.
Turn on vibration
- Press the HOME button.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Controllers and Sensors.
- Select Controller Vibration to enable it. Select the same option again to disable it.
Nintendo refers to the feature as controller vibration or HD Rumble. Enabling the system toggle does not force vibration in every game: the software must support rumble, and many games have a separate Vibration or Rumble option. See Nintendo’s activation instructions.

If the controller still does not vibrate
- Check the game. Confirm that it supports controller vibration and that its in-game vibration setting is enabled.
- Charge the controller. A low battery can complicate troubleshooting.
- Update the console. Go to System Settings → System → System Update and install any available update.
- Update the controller. In System Settings, use the controller-update option displayed on your console. Menu wording can change with system software; do not substitute Nintendo Switch 2 instructions for an original-Switch menu.
- Reconnect it. Press the controller’s SYNC button once, then press another button to turn it on and reconnect.
- Try another supported game or controller. If several controllers fail only in one game, the game’s support or setting is the likely cause. If one controller fails in multiple supported games, that controller is more suspect.
Nintendo’s HD Rumble troubleshooting guide recommends these checks and says service may be needed when vibration remains absent or a same-type controller has a substantial difference that affects play.

Test whether the controller is connected
To check button and stick input, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Test Input Devices → Test Controller Buttons, then press buttons or move the sticks. This confirms input, not the vibration motor. Nintendo’s test does not provide a dedicated rumble test and excludes the HOME, Capture, POWER, volume, and SYNC buttons. Switch Lite owners
Switch Lite has no detachable built-in Joy-Con. HD rumble works when you use a supported wireless Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Wired and third-party controllers can differ in compatibility and rumble implementation, so check the specific model’s specifications. Nintendo’s support page documents the supported wireless-controller behavior.
Why does vibration feel weak?
Weakness is not automatically a fault. Nintendo says vibration intensity can vary between games, between controller types, and even between two controllers of the same type. Compare another supported game and controller first. If the difference is large and interferes with gameplay, continue the troubleshooting steps and contact Nintendo about service.

Original Switch versus Switch 2
This article covers the original Nintendo Switch family. Switch 2 uses different labels: its setting is under Controllers & Accessories → Controller Vibration and compatible hardware uses the term HD Rumble 2. Switch 2 also has a controller-search feature that can deliberately make a paired controller vibrate; the original Switch does not offer an equivalent system-wide “vibrate now” command. If vibration is enabled, the game supports it, the controller is charged and updated, and reconnecting does not help, contact Nintendo support. A replacement Joy-Con or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be an alternative, but buying hardware will not fix a disabled setting or a game without rumble support. Third-party controllers may not reproduce Nintendo’s HD Rumble behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a Nintendo Switch controller vibrate on demand?
Not on the original Switch through a general system test. Vibration normally occurs in a game that supports it; the brief vibration when enabling Controller Vibration is only confirmation.
Does passing the button test prove rumble works?
No. Test Controller Buttons checks button and stick input, not the vibration motor.
