Install the official Minecraft Launcher on the other computer and sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns your Minecraft PC purchase. You normally do not need to buy Minecraft Java Edition again. Your account entitlement follows you, but local worlds, mods, screenshots, and settings usually remain on the old computer and must be transferred separately.
What you need
- The Microsoft account email address, phone number, or sign-in identifier that owns Minecraft for PC.
- Access to your password and any two-factor authentication or security verification.
- A compatible Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.
- The official Minecraft Launcher.
The Microsoft account used to sign in to Windows is not necessarily the account that owns Minecraft. Your Xbox gamertag, Microsoft Store account, Xbox app account, and Minecraft entitlement can be confusing when multiple Microsoft accounts are involved. Use the account associated with the original PC purchase.
Log into Minecraft Java on another computer
- Open the official Minecraft download page on the new computer.
- Download and install the Minecraft Launcher for your operating system. On Windows, the Launcher may also be available through the Microsoft Store.
- Open the Launcher and choose Microsoft Login, or the current equivalent Microsoft-account sign-in option.
- Enter the credentials for the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft for PC.
- Complete any password, security, or two-factor authentication prompt.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the Launcher.
- Choose Install or Play, then select the desired installation or game version if prompted.
Launcher layouts and button labels can change, but the important step is always the same: authenticate with the Microsoft account that owns the PC license. The official installation instructions are available in Minecraft Help.

Normally, no. A Minecraft Java Edition purchase for PC is associated with the Microsoft account that owns it. Sign into the Launcher on another compatible Windows, Mac, or Linux computer with that account and the game should appear in your library or as an available installation. This does not mean that every Minecraft purchase grants PC Java Edition. A purchase made through PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, or a mobile app store is platform-specific and does not automatically become a PC Java license. Java and Bedrock are also separate editions with different multiplayer compatibility, even though the current PC product bundles them together.
If Minecraft says “Buy Now” or “Play Demo”
A missing license usually means the Launcher is using the wrong account or cannot validate the entitlement. Check these items in order:

- Sign out and verify the Microsoft account. Use the account that made the original PC purchase, not merely the account currently shown in Windows or your browser.
- Check the Xbox app on Windows. Sign in with the same licensed Microsoft account.
- Check the Microsoft Store. Sign in there with the same account, then restart the Launcher.
- Check purchase history. If you have several Microsoft accounts, confirm which one contains the Minecraft PC entitlement instead of guessing.
- Reinstall the Launcher. Uninstall and reinstall it from the official Minecraft site or Microsoft Store if its files or dependencies are corrupted.
Minecraft’s Launcher support guidance specifically addresses account mismatches among the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. Do not create a new Microsoft account as a workaround: a new account will not inherit the original license, player identity, username history, or cosmetics.
If you have lost access to the old email address or verification method, use Microsoft’s account-recovery process and be prepared to verify ownership. Do not pay an unofficial service to recover or “transfer” the license.

Your Java worlds do not transfer automatically
Signing in transfers the account entitlement, not every file on the old computer. A local Java single-player world normally remains in the old computer’s Minecraft data folder.
Free method: copy the world folder
- Close Minecraft and the Launcher on the old computer.
- Make a backup of the world before copying it.
- Find the
savesfolder in the Minecraft installation used by that world. - Copy the entire folder for the world to removable storage or another secure transfer location.
- Install and launch the same or compatible Minecraft version on the new computer once, then close it.
- Paste the world folder into the new installation’s
savesfolder. - Start Java Edition and check the single-player world list.
Common default locations are:
- Windows:
%AppData%.minecraftsaves - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves - Linux:
~/.minecraft/saves
These locations can differ when using a third-party launcher, a custom game directory, separate Launcher installations, or modded profiles. Check the profile’s configured game directory rather than assuming the default path.

Open the copied world with the matching Minecraft version first. If it was created with mods or an older version, make another backup before upgrading. Opening a world in a newer version can change it, and a modded world may show missing blocks, items, or errors if the required mod loader, mods, libraries, or resource packs are not installed.

- World backups and single-player worlds
- Screenshots and recordings
- Resource packs and shader packs
- Mods, mod loaders, and dependency libraries
- Keybindings, video settings, and other configuration files
- Server-list entries and multiplayer server addresses
- Custom Java installations, JVM arguments, Launcher profiles, and installation settings
For modded Java, install compatible versions of Minecraft, the mod loader, every required mod, and its dependencies before opening the copied world. A server-hosted world is different: the server owner retains the world, so you generally only need to install the required client software and reconnect. Client-side mods, screenshots, and settings still need separate setup.
Using Realms instead
Minecraft Realms is an optional paid cloud-hosted service. For Java players, it can make a world available across computers associated with the same account through a Realm’s world management and backups. It is useful if you regularly switch computers or want a cloud route instead of manually copying files.
Realms is not required to log into Java, and it does not copy every local file. Mods, shaders, screenshots, keybindings, and Launcher configurations still require separate installation or transfer. If you bought Java with a Mojang account, use the Microsoft account connected during migration. Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration ended on December 18, 2023, and ordinary migration support is no longer available. If an eligible account was never migrated before the deadline, creating a new Microsoft account will not recover its license. See the official Mojang account migration information.
