Find the exact GPU model in Windows, then verify that the manufacturer lists hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing (DXR), RT cores, or ray-tracing accelerators. “DirectX 12” or a large VRAM number alone does not prove ray-tracing support. Finally, check the game’s renderer and requirements: technical support and playable performance are separate questions.
The quickest reliable check
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Choose Performance → GPU and copy the complete model name shown for GPU 0, GPU 1, or another adapter.
- Open the GPU maker’s official specifications page for that exact model.
- Look for DirectX Raytracing (DXR), hardware ray-tracing acceleration, RT cores, or ray-tracing accelerators.
- Update the graphics driver, then confirm that your game supports ray tracing and DirectX 12 mode.
For gaming, this native hardware check is more useful than a generic “DirectX 12 compatible” label.
How to identify your GPU in Windows
Task Manager
Task Manager is normally the simplest method on Windows 10 and 11. The full model name matters: “RTX 4060 Laptop GPU” and “RTX 4060” are related but do not have identical power or performance limits.
DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Open the Display or Render tab.
- Record the GPU name, manufacturer, driver version/date, and feature levels.
NVIDIA documents dxdiag for identifying the display device and inspecting DirectX information: NVIDIA’s dxdiag guidance. You can select Save All Information to create a complete report, as described at NVIDIA’s report instructions.

Device Manager
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and copy the exact name. A system can list both integrated and discrete GPUs, so do not assume the first entry is the one a game uses.
NVIDIA Control Panel
On an NVIDIA system, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Help → System Information. NVIDIA says this panel includes installed hardware, driver data, Direct3D API information, and feature levels: NVIDIA System Information help.
GPU families with native hardware ray tracing
These family-level examples identify the usual starting points, not equal performance. Always verify the exact model and the game’s requirements.
| GPU family | Hardware ray tracing | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-series | Yes | RT-core generation, model performance, power and game settings. NVIDIA associates RTX GPUs with dedicated RT cores: NVIDIA DX12 Ultimate. |
| NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-, 16-series and older | Do not assume native hardware RT | DirectX 12 support is not enough; check the exact model and title. |
| AMD Radeon RX 6000 | Yes | AMD identifies hardware ray-tracing acceleration: RX 6000 specifications. |
| AMD Radeon RX 7000 | Yes | AMD identifies second-generation ray-tracing accelerators: RX 7000 specifications. |
| AMD Radeon RX 9000 | Yes | Check the individual model in AMD’s current Radeon listings: AMD Radeon overview. |
| Intel Arc | Yes | Intel documents hardware-accelerated DXR, but game and driver compatibility remains model-specific: Intel real-time ray-tracing guide. |
| Older integrated graphics | Usually unsuitable for hardware RT | Verify the exact chip; “integrated,” “dedicated,” or a VRAM number is not a ray-tracing specification. |
DirectX 12 is not the same as ray tracing
DirectX 12 is a broad graphics API. DirectX 12 Ultimate is a feature set that includes DXR, but a system reporting DirectX 12 support does not automatically provide native ray-tracing hardware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft’s DXR specification uses a device capability called RaytracingTier. D3D12_RAYTRACING_TIER_NOT_SUPPORTED means native DXR is unavailable through that path. The specification is at Microsoft’s DirectX Raytracing specification. Feature levels shown by diagnostic tools are useful context, but they are not a complete ray-tracing verdict.

Check the game itself
- Launch the game and open Settings, Options, Graphics, Display, or Video.
- Look for Ray tracing, Hardware ray tracing, RT reflections, RT shadows, RT global illumination, or Path tracing.
- Confirm the game is running in DirectX 12 mode if the title requires it; a DirectX 11 launch option can hide RT settings.
- Read the game’s official system requirements and patch notes for supported GPUs, drivers, APIs, and render modes.
A missing option may simply mean the game has no RT implementation. A greyed-out option can indicate an unsupported GPU, driver, API, feature tier, rendering mode, VRAM condition, or a game bug. A visible switch only proves that the game exposes the feature, not that your target frame rate is achievable.
When a laptop or multi-GPU PC gives the wrong result
Laptops often list an integrated GPU alongside a discrete RTX, Radeon, or Arc adapter. While the game is running, open Task Manager → Performance and see which GPU shows utilization. If necessary:
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game, choose Options, and set High performance.
- Use the laptop maker’s graphics-switching or performance utility.
- On a desktop, connect the monitor to the discrete GPU’s output when your hardware requires it.
An RTX 4060 Laptop GPU can have the same basic RT capability as the desktop family, but power limits, cooling, and memory configuration materially change performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSupport does not guarantee playable performance
Ray tracing can be demanding, especially at 4K, with path tracing, high-quality reflections, global illumination, heavy geometry, or high-refresh-rate targets. Effects also differ in cost:
- Ray-traced shadows
- Ray-traced reflections
- Ray-traced ambient occlusion or global illumination
- Full path tracing
A card may run one effect but struggle with another. Resolution, texture quality, scene complexity, CPU limits, driver version, laptop power limits, and VRAM all matter; VRAM capacity alone is not a compatibility test.

DLSS, FSR, and XeSS upscaling or frame generation can improve a supported game’s performance, but they do not create RT hardware and each technology has its own GPU and game requirements. Enable one RT effect at a time, measure frame rate and frame-time stability, then adjust resolution, RT quality, and upscaling.
Software fallback versus hardware acceleration
A software or compute-shader fallback can implement ray-tracing functions on hardware without dedicated RT units. Microsoft describes such a fallback separately from native DXR support in its specification. It may satisfy a narrow technical test but is generally not equivalent to a modern RT-capable gaming GPU or to playable performance. For games, look for native hardware-accelerated DXR.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Advanced developer check: query the DXR tier
Most gamers do not need this. A Direct3D application can query D3D12_FEATURE_D3D12_OPTIONS5 and inspect RaytracingTier:
D3D12_FEATURE_DATA_D3D12_OPTIONS5 options5 = {};
device->CheckFeatureSupport(
D3D12_FEATURE_D3D12_OPTIONS5,
&options5,
sizeof(options5)
);
if (options5.RaytracingTier < D3D12_RAYTRACING_TIER_1_0) {
// Native DXR is not supported.
}
Microsoft defines tiers including NOT_SUPPORTED = 0, 1_0 = 10, 1_1 = 11, 1_2 = 12, and 2_0 = 20. A higher tier adds API capabilities; it does not automatically mean higher frame rates.
Should you upgrade?
Upgrade only after confirming that your current GPU lacks native hardware RT or cannot meet the game and settings you actually want. Compare current RTX, Radeon RX, and Intel Arc models on official specification pages, then check case clearance, power-supply capacity, cooling, target resolution, and the specific games. Ray-tracing support is one requirement, not a complete buying decision. Official starting points include NVIDIA GeForce RTX, AMD Radeon, and Intel’s Arc ray-tracing documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does DirectX 12 mean my GPU supports ray tracing?
No. DirectX 12 is a broad API. Verify native DXR capability or dedicated RT hardware on the exact GPU model.
Does GTX support ray tracing?
Do not treat GTX 10- or 16-series branding as proof of native hardware ray tracing. Check the model and game; RTX is the relevant mainstream GeForce branding for dedicated RT cores.
Do all RTX cards support ray tracing?
Mainstream GeForce RTX 20-series and newer cards have dedicated RT hardware, but model, laptop power limits, driver, and game requirements determine practical results.
Why is the ray-tracing option greyed out?
The game may require DX12, a newer driver, a particular feature tier, more VRAM, a different rendering mode, or the discrete GPU. Game bugs are also possible.
Does ray tracing require Windows 11?
Not universally. Requirements are title-specific; check the game’s official operating-system, API, driver, and GPU requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a driver update add ray tracing to an old GPU?
A driver can fix or expose software support, but it cannot add dedicated RT hardware that the GPU does not contain.
How can I tell whether my laptop is using the correct GPU?
Watch GPU utilization in Task Manager while the game runs, then set the title to High performance in Settings → System → Display → Graphics if it is using integrated graphics.
