Use Google Earth’s Historical imagery feature: search for a place, switch to the Satellite basemap, open Historical imagery, then choose an older date shown on the timeline. You can do this in Google Earth on the web and, with controls that may vary by app version, on mobile; Google Earth Pro remains a useful desktop option. The timeline shows available images, not every date. Historical Street View and Timelapse are separate features.

Open Google Earth and search for an address, place, or coordinates.

Choose the Satellite basemap if the Map basemap is active. Google says Historical imagery is unavailable with Map.

Click the Historical imagery button—the globe with a circular arrow—or choose View → Historical imagery.

Use the timeline to select a marked year or date. Years appear as dots; smaller dots can indicate additional months. Available dates can differ from one location to another.

To leave the historical view, click the Historical imagery button again.
Google’s current Historical imagery instructions document this web workflow and the Satellite requirement. If you only need a quick browser lookup, you do not need to start with Earth Pro.

Use the timeline in Google Earth Pro

Install Google Earth Pro from Google’s Earth versions page. Google lists the desktop app for PC, Mac, and Linux.

Open Earth Pro and search for the location.

Click the Historical imagery clock icon in the top toolbar.

Move the time slider toward older dates and select a marked image. Move it toward the newest available imagery when you want to return to a more recent view.
The clock-and-slider path is also described in a Google Earth support-community guide. Toolbar placement may change with interface updates. Google’s versions page identifies the downloadable Earth Pro version as 7.3; it does not establish a more specific patch number here.

Google announced historical imagery for Google Earth on web and mobile in September 2024. In the app, search for a location, open the visual or layers controls, and choose Historical imagery if it is available; then use the timeline or date controls. The precise control placement can differ between Android and iPhone app versions, so these steps are not a promise of identical screens on every device. If you cannot find the feature, try Google Earth in a desktop browser or use Earth Pro.

How far back does Google Earth go?
There is no single earliest year for the whole world. Google says some locations have imagery reaching as far back as 80 years, and its 2024 announcement cites 1930s imagery for cities including London, Berlin, Warsaw, Paris, and San Francisco. That is an example of what is available in some places, not a guarantee for your address. A city may have many historical dates while a rural area has only a few.
Google Earth does not let you enter any arbitrary year and retrieve an image. You can select dates represented on that location’s timeline; if a year is not marked, there generally is no selectable image for it.
Why can’t I find the year you want?

The location has no image for that date. Coverage varies, and the timeline only marks imagery Google makes available.

The wrong basemap is active. Switch from Map to Satellite; Historical imagery is unavailable with Map.

You are looking at a different feature. Historical satellite imagery is not the same as Timelapse, 3D buildings, or Street View.

The timeline is showing broader intervals. Look for smaller dots, which can represent additional months.

The displayed date is not a precise capture day. An image can cover a range of collection dates or combine photos taken at different times.

The control is hard to find in your current interface. Search for a location, check the toolbar and View menu, exit Street View or Timelapse, and refresh the browser or app. If needed, try Earth Pro.
When Historical imagery is turned on, Google says 3D buildings are turned off. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a problem with your device or the imagery.
What does the date on the timeline mean?
Do not assume the selected date means every visible pixel was photographed on that exact day. Google explains that some imagery has a single acquisition date, while other imagery consists of mosaics assembled from photos collected over days or months. In Historical imagery, the slider date means imagery was captured on or before that date. The date shown can change as you move across the map because different areas may use different imagery. Time-zone differences can also occasionally make a displayed date appear one day off. Google says 3D imagery generally does not have a single collection date because it is derived from aerial images collected over multiple dates.

Search for or click a location in Google Earth.

Click Pegman at the bottom of the screen and choose a highlighted Street View area.

Select See more dates or the History control if it appears.

Choose a date or thumbnail, then select Back to latest to return to the newest available panorama.
This is a separate, location-dependent street-level history—not the overhead satellite timeline. See Google’s Historical Street View instructions.

If Google Earth does not have the image you need
For a missing year, higher resolution, or a better-documented record, check local government GIS and parcel portals, county or municipal aerial-photo archives, state mapping or natural-resources agencies, national mapping agencies, and university map libraries. Commercial imagery archives may also be relevant for professional needs, but availability, licensing, resolution, and provenance depend on the provider and product.
For property research, journalism, planning, or a potential legal matter, treat Google Earth as a visual reference rather than automatically as a certified survey or proof of condition on an exact date. Preserve a screenshot along with the visible location, selected date, any displayed imagery attribution or date information, access date, and relevant coordinates or parcel identifier. Whether an image is suitable evidence depends on the use, metadata, and jurisdiction; corroborate it with records appropriate to the question.
