If other people cannot hear you in the Xbox app on PC, test the microphone in Windows before changing Xbox settings. Select the correct input device, enable microphone access, confirm that Windows records your voice, then restart the Xbox app. If Windows cannot detect or record from the microphone, the Xbox app is not the primary problem.
Quick fix
- Check the headset or microphone’s physical mute switch, boom position, power, pairing, and cable.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the intended device under Input.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Run Windows’ microphone test and confirm that the input meter moves and the recording contains your voice.
- Close and reopen the Xbox app after changing the device or permissions.
Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. The steps below separate hardware, Windows, and Xbox-specific failures so you do not reinstall the app unnecessarily.
First, identify what is failing

Test the microphone in Windows
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the device you actually want to use. It may be named Headset Microphone, Microphone Array, USB Microphone, or a manufacturer-specific name.
Speak normally and watch the input indicator. For a recording check, open the selected microphone’s properties, choose Start test, speak, select Stop test, and play the result. Microsoft documents this workflow in its microphone setup and testing guidance.

- Moving meter and audible recording: Windows can capture audio. Continue with the Xbox-specific checks below.
- No meter movement: Check mute controls, permissions, input selection, volume, connection, and drivers.
- Meter movement but a very quiet recording: Adjust input volume, gain, and microphone position.
If several microphones are listed—such as a laptop array, webcam, monitor, USB microphone, and headset—select each one in turn and speak into only that device. The moving meter identifies which input Windows is receiving.
Enable microphone permissions
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- If the Xbox app appears as an individual entry, enable it there too.
Xbox may not appear as an individual switch. Microsoft explains that desktop applications do not necessarily appear separately in the privacy list, so the global desktop-app setting can be the relevant control. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows desktop apps and privacy.
Windows 10
Use Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access for this device, Allow apps to access your microphone, and the setting that allows desktop apps to access the microphone. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but these microphone controls still apply to systems running it. Microsoft lists the permission details in its microphone permissions guide.

Select and adjust the right input
Do not assume that Windows’ default device is your headset microphone. A laptop may continue using its built-in microphone even after a USB or Bluetooth headset is connected. Select the headset’s named microphone under Settings > System > Sound > Input, then run the test again before opening Xbox.
Increase the microphone’s Input volume if the recording is too quiet. Some devices also expose a traditional Levels tab with Microphone and, where supported, Microphone Boost. These controls vary by hardware and driver.
If the audio clips, crackles, or sounds harsh, lower the input level rather than increasing it. Keep a boom microphone near the corner of your mouth instead of directly in front of it, and check that clothing or a headset frame is not rubbing against the microphone.

Check the headset or microphone itself
USB devices
- Confirm the headset or microphone is powered on and not muted by a physical button.
- Connect it directly to the PC instead of an unreliable hub.
- Try another USB port, then check whether it appears in Windows Sound.
3.5 mm headsets
- Check the inline mute switch and ensure the plug is fully inserted.
- Use the PC’s combined headset jack, if it has one.
- If the computer has separate headphone and microphone jacks, use the appropriate splitter.
Bluetooth headsets
- Make sure the headset is paired and connected to the PC, not only to a phone or Xbox console.
- Confirm that its microphone appears under Windows Input and select it explicitly.
- If playback works but the microphone disappears when voice chat starts, try re-pairing it or testing a wired/USB connection.
Bluetooth devices can expose separate playback and microphone profiles. Simultaneous high-quality stereo playback and microphone use is not guaranteed for every headset, Bluetooth implementation, driver, or Windows configuration.

A webcam microphone or laptop microphone array can remain active as an alternative input. Select it deliberately if you want to use it, or select the headset microphone and test again.

- Close the Xbox app completely.
- Close Discord, Teams, browser voice chats, recording software, and other applications that may be using the microphone.
- Reconnect the headset or microphone, or select it again in Windows Sound.
- Run the Windows test once more.
- Reopen Xbox and test party chat.
Windows recording proves that local capture works, but it does not guarantee that every application will use the same input or behave identically. Also check the physical mute state on the headset and confirm that you are in the intended Xbox party or chat context. If the problem affects only one party or session, it may not be a microphone hardware failure.

If Xbox works only after the device is reconnected, connect the microphone before launching the app. If your installed Windows build provides Xbox app repair, update, or reset options, use those only after the Windows test succeeds. The exact Xbox app labels and party-chat controls can vary by installed version, so do not rely on a menu name that is absent from your build.
When Windows does not detect the microphone
- Reconnect the device and check its power or battery.
- Try another USB port or, for Bluetooth, remove and pair the headset again.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and check whether the device appears under Input.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Update the relevant audio or headset driver.
- If the device remains undetected, uninstall the relevant audio device or driver and restart the PC so Windows can attempt to reinstall it.
- If it does not return automatically, open Device Manager and choose Scan for hardware changes, then update the driver again.
Use drivers from your PC, motherboard, headset, or microphone manufacturer when the generic Windows driver does not solve the issue. Avoid random third-party “driver updater” sites, and do not uninstall unrelated sound devices unless you know exactly which hardware they control. Restart Windows audio services
Use this more advanced step when multiple audio applications are malfunctioning or Windows behaves as though input devices are unavailable. Save work and close audio applications first.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Confirm that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is running. Do not stop it casually because other Windows functions depend on it.
- Test the microphone again in Windows, then reopen Xbox.

When should you replace the microphone?
Replacement should be the last step, not the first. Consider the hardware faulty only after it fails on multiple ports or PCs, remains undetected after connection and driver checks, or shows physical damage. A known-good headset or microphone working on the same PC is useful evidence; if it works, focus on the original device or its connection rather than reinstalling Xbox.
