For a local audio file, use yt-dlp with FFmpeg on a video you own or are authorized to save. The basic command is yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL". YouTube Premium downloads are for offline playback inside YouTube; they are not MP3 files you can export to another app. Before downloading, check both your rights to the material and YouTube’s Terms of Service.
First, choose the right kind of download
“Extracting audio” can mean a few different things: downloading a video’s media, saving only its audio track, converting that audio into a format such as MP3, or recording playback from your computer. For a local file, yt-dlp can select or download the audio and FFmpeg can extract or convert it. Recording playback is usually less convenient and may reduce quality.

YouTube’s app does not generally provide a “download MP3” feature. Premium offline downloads are app-bound rather than ordinary files for Finder, File Explorer, an SD card or an editor. See YouTube’s offline-download help.
Check permissions before saving or reusing audio
Only download material you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally authorized to save. A personal copy does not by itself grant permission to repost, sell, remix, publicly perform or distribute the audio. Copyright rules vary by country and by the material involved; fair use and similar exceptions are fact-specific, not blanket permission. YouTube’s terms and copyright law are separate considerations, and satisfying one does not necessarily satisfy the other.

If the video is yours, YouTube Studio is a supported starting point: YouTube explains how to download your uploaded videos. Downloads are subject to limitations, including certain strikes, removals and licensed audio, and a limit of five downloads per video in a 24-hour period. Once you have the authorized video file, use FFmpeg or an audio editor to extract its soundtrack.
Use yt-dlp and FFmpeg for a local audio file
yt-dlp is a free, open-source command-line downloader. FFmpeg provides the tools yt-dlp needs for audio extraction and conversion; yt-dlp’s audio-extraction options require both ffmpeg and ffprobe. Install yt-dlp from its official installation guide and FFmpeg from the official FFmpeg project or a reputable build linked there. Make sure the executables are on your system’s PATH, or put them somewhere yt-dlp can find them.
Windows
- Get yt-dlp from its official releases.
- Install FFmpeg and ensure both
ffmpeg.exeandffprobe.exeare available. You can place them in the same folder asyt-dlp.exeor add their folder toPATH. - Open PowerShell or Command Prompt in that folder and run:
.yt-dlp.exe -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL" - Look for the finished file in the current folder. In PowerShell, the
.prefix (written as.in the command above) runs an executable from the current directory.
Use this clean command without any leading space inside the code block if copying: .yt-dlp.exe -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL".

macOS and Linux
One installation route documented by yt-dlp is Python’s package installer:
python3 -m pip install -U yt-dlpThen run:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL"Install FFmpeg and FFprobe using a suitable package or build for your system. A standalone yt-dlp binary is another option; the official installation guide covers the available approaches. Avoid assuming you need sudo: a user-writable installation location may be preferable.

Replace YOUTUBE_URL with the video’s URL, including the quotation marks. The quotes help prevent shell characters in a URL from being interpreted as part of the command.
Choose a format without creating unnecessary quality loss
To save the best audio stream available without converting it to another format, use:

yt-dlp -f bestaudio "YOUTUBE_URL"The result might be M4A, WebM/Opus or another container, depending on what that particular video offers. If your player or editor accepts it, keeping that stream avoids an extra lossy conversion. To request a converted format instead, use one of these:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL"
yt-dlp -x --audio-format m4a "YOUTUBE_URL"
yt-dlp -x --audio-format opus "YOUTUBE_URL"
yt-dlp -x --audio-format wav "YOUTUBE_URL"

“Lossless” describes the resulting FLAC or WAV file, not the YouTube source. If the available stream was already encoded with losses, converting it to a lossless container does not recover discarded information. MP3 is often a compatibility choice, not automatically the highest-quality option.
Inspect formats and select the audio you want
Available streams differ by video and can change. List what yt-dlp currently sees with:

yt-dlp -F "YOUTUBE_URL"Some videos offer separate audio and video streams, particularly at higher quality; processing or merging streams is one reason FFmpeg is needed. To choose a specific listed format, use yt-dlp -f FORMAT_ID "YOUTUBE_URL". Do not copy a format ID from an old guide: IDs vary by video. If there are multiple audio tracks, check the listed language or track details and verify the downloaded result rather than assuming the first one is right.
Set filenames, add metadata or download a section
Use a title-based filename instead of the default naming if you prefer:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3
-o "%(title)s.%(ext)s"

yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3

"YOUTUBE_URL"Section downloading depends on FFmpeg and the current extractor and source format. Stream seeking may start at a nearby keyframe or segment boundary, so the cut may not be frame-perfect. If the boundary matters, download the authorized source first and trim it in an editor.

“FFmpeg not found” or extraction fails
Check that both FFmpeg and FFprobe are installed and discoverable. In a new terminal, run:
ffmpeg -version
ffprobe -versionIf either command is not recognized, install the missing executable or correct PATH. On Windows, placing both executables alongside yt-dlp is another option. Restart the terminal after changing environment variables.
“Video unavailable” or a bot/sign-in prompt
The video may be private, removed, age- or region-restricted, members-only, or otherwise unavailable; alternatively, YouTube may have changed its delivery system or yt-dlp may be outdated. First test that the URL works in your browser, then update yt-dlp:

Only low-quality formats appear
Run yt-dlp -F "YOUTUBE_URL" and choose only from the formats actually listed. The video may have limited encodings, or the extractor may not currently expose every stream. There is no guarantee that every video has a high-quality audio option.
The output is WebM, Opus or another unfamiliar type
The extension identifies the container or encoding; it is not by itself evidence of poor quality. Try a compatible player, or request MP3 conversion if you specifically need MP3. Do not rename an extension to pretend it is another format—convert the file instead.
The audio is silent or the wrong track
Inspect the available formats and track details with -F, then test the original downloaded stream in another player. A video may contain multiple language tracks or a largely silent section; a conversion problem is another possibility.

Special characters, reserved Windows names, very long titles or path-length limits can interfere. Use a short template such as %(id)s - %(title).100s.%(ext)s, and save to a folder with a short path.
An older guide’s command stopped working
YouTube’s delivery behavior and yt-dlp’s extractor requirements can change. Update yt-dlp, use -F to inspect the formats available now, and check the current official documentation rather than relying on old format IDs or copied workarounds. yt-dlp does not guarantee that every video will remain extractable.
Should you use an online converter?
Unknown converter sites are not the safest default. They may rely on intrusive advertising or misleading buttons, and their privacy, file handling, reliability and compliance can vary. Submitting a video URL to a service also shares that information with the service. If you need a GUI, choose a reputable desktop application from its official vendor, and check whether it uses a maintained yt-dlp/FFmpeg backend. For editing an authorized local file, an audio editor such as Audacity can trim or export audio, but it is not a substitute for obtaining the source file lawfully.
