If PayPal is asking you to confirm a debit or credit card, the four-digit code is usually in the description of a small PayPal charge on that card’s statement—not in a text or email. Find the digits in an entry such as PayPal*1234 CODE, then enter them on the confirmation screen for that card in PayPal.
First, make sure it is the card-confirmation code
PayPal uses different codes for different tasks. The four-digit code in this article confirms that you own a linked debit or credit card. It is not the code for signing in, and it is not the card’s CVV or CVC.

For a security check, enter the message code only on the active PayPal security-check screen. In the cited US guidance, these identity codes can expire after about five to ten minutes; that timing does not describe the four-digit statement code. PayPal explains its security checks and SMS identity-code troubleshooting.

- Open your card issuer’s website or mobile banking app and select the card you are confirming.
- Look in the transaction list for a small PayPal verification charge. Check pending transactions first.
- Open the transaction details. The description may look like
PayPal*1234 CODEorPP*1234 CODE. The four digits in the description are the code.
Descriptions vary by bank and country. A pending transaction may show the code within minutes if the issuer displays the full description. If it does not, PayPal says an online statement may show it after two to three business days. You can also check a paper statement if online details are unavailable. PayPal’s instructions for finding the card-confirmation code explain where to look.

Enter the code in PayPal
- Sign in by typing PayPal’s address into your browser or by opening the official PayPal app. Don’t use an unexpected message link.
- Open Wallet and select the card with a confirmation prompt.
- Choose Confirm Card or the equivalent confirmation option.
- Enter the four digits from the PayPal transaction description and select Confirm or Submit.
- Check that PayPal now shows the card as confirmed.
Labels can differ by country and interface. Some PayPal help instructions show Wallet and Confirm Card; others use Banks and Cards and Submit. The important point is to select the same card that generated the verification charge. See PayPal’s card-confirmation instructions.
If the code is missing
- Check the full transaction details. Your account’s transaction feed may abbreviate the merchant description; open the PayPal charge itself.
- Allow time for the issuer’s display to update. The code may be unavailable while the charge is pending. Check again after two to three business days, when it may appear on the online statement.
- Check the right card and account. Confirm that the charge is for the card you selected and consider whether it might be tied to another PayPal account.
- Request another code only if PayPal offers that option. PayPal says a new code may be requested up to three times. Use the most recently requested code, not an older one.
PayPal cannot provide the card-confirmation code by email or telephone; it appears in the card transaction description. If your issuer does not show enough detail, contact the card issuer through its official channel or wait for the statement to update.

If PayPal rejects the code
Before trying again, check that you chose the correct card and copied the four digits from its PayPal transaction description—not the CVV, an authorization number, or a bank reference number. If you requested the code more than once, use the newest code and match it to the newest PayPal verification charge. Issuers can shorten or reformat transaction descriptions, so don’t guess when the digits are unclear.
Stop if the code fails repeatedly. PayPal says five incorrect entries can disable the card in its system. You may need to contact PayPal through its official Help or Contact options; its guidance says the card may need to be removed and added again before you request another code. Avoid repeatedly guessing.

After confirmation: what happens to the charge?
PayPal says it initiates a refund of the verification charge immediately after successful confirmation. That does not mean it will appear in your account immediately: your card issuer may take up to 30 days to post the credit, and the original charge may remain pending until the issuer processes it. If the card has been removed or the PayPal account closed before the refund posts, PayPal says the refund may fail and customer service may need to handle it manually. Details can vary by issuer and jurisdiction. PayPal describes card confirmation and its refund timing.
If there is no “Confirm Card” option
The card may already be confirmed automatically, so PayPal may not require you to enter a code. It may also be shown in a different account area or may not be eligible for this confirmation process. Check the card’s status in Wallet or the equivalent area before requesting a new code.

Keep the code private
Enter the code only on PayPal’s official website or app when you started the card-confirmation process. Do not give it to a caller, buyer, seller, or anyone claiming it will release funds, and do not send a screenshot of your statement. If you did not initiate the verification charge, don’t use or share its code. Review your PayPal activity and contact PayPal and your card issuer through their official channels.
