To delete a sent email in Gmail, open Sent, select the message, and click or tap Delete. Gmail moves it to Trash (called Bin in some locales). To remove it immediately, open Trash and choose Delete forever.
If you have only just sent the message, choose Undo instead. Deleting it later removes your Gmail copy; it does not recall a message already delivered to someone else.
Delete a sent email in Gmail on a computer
- Open Gmail in your browser.
- In the left sidebar, click Sent. If it is hidden, click More, then Sent.
- Find the email and select its checkbox. You can also open the message and click the trash-can icon in the toolbar.
- Click Delete.
The message now resides in Trash. Gmail may display conversation threads, so selecting a row can affect the whole conversation rather than just one individual message. Open the thread and inspect its messages before deleting if you need to keep other replies.
Deleting removes the message from your mailbox, including the copy visible in Sent and searchable in Gmail. It does not erase a copy that has already arrived in the recipient’s inbox.

Delete sent emails in the Gmail mobile app
Android
- Open the Gmail app and tap the menu icon.
- Tap Sent.
- Touch and hold the message.
- Select any additional messages, then tap Delete at the top.
Android Gmail selects up to 50 messages by default. Scroll and select another batch if you need to remove more. Instructions: Google’s Android Gmail guide.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Gmail and tap the menu icon.
- Choose Sent.
- Touch and hold the email.
- Select more messages if required, then tap Delete.

Permanently delete a sent email
- Open Gmail’s left-side menu and choose Trash or Bin.
- Select the deleted message.
- Choose Delete forever.
To remove every deleted message, choose Empty Trash now. This is intended to be permanent through the normal Gmail interface. Gmail automatically permanently deletes messages left in Trash for up to 30 days. Sources: desktop Gmail deletion guidance and Gmail mobile guidance.

No. Gmail’s Delete command removes your account’s copy, not a copy already delivered to a recipient. If the send notification is still visible, cancel delivery immediately:

- On a computer, click Undo in the Message sent notification at the bottom left.
- On Android, tap Undo in the Sent notification.
On the web, set the cancellation period at Settings → See all settings → Undo Send → Send cancellation period. The available choices are 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds. After that window, send a correction, contact the recipient, or ask them to delete their copy. See Google’s Undo Send guide.
Recover a sent email deleted by mistake
- Open Trash (or Bin).
- Select the message.
- Choose Move to.
- Select Sent, Inbox, or another label.
Messages are normally recoverable from Trash for up to 30 days unless you permanently delete them first. After permanent deletion or expiry of that period, Gmail’s standard controls cannot normally restore them.

Find a particular sent email quickly
Use Gmail’s search box before opening Sent:
in:sentin:sent from:mein:sent to:[email protected]in:sent subject:"invoice"in:sent after:2026/01/01 before:2026/02/01in:sent has:attachmentin:sent larger:10M
Review the results carefully before deleting. Search operators and size-based cleanup are documented by Google and Google’s storage guide.

- Run a narrow search, such as
in:sent older:1y, or limit it by sender, date, attachment, or size. - Click the selection checkbox at the top of the results.
- Check which conversations are selected. Gmail initially selects the conversations on the current page and may offer a link to select all matching conversations.
- Use that all-results option only after verifying the query.
- Click Delete.
Deleting in stages—for example, by year or sender—reduces the chance of removing a message you still need.

If deleting sent emails did not free storage
Deleted mail still counts while it remains in Trash or Spam. Empty both folders, then allow time for Google’s storage calculation to update; after large deletions, Google says this can take up to 48–72 hours. Personal Google storage is shared by Gmail, Drive, and Photos, so inspect those services if space remains low: storage guidance.

- Sent is missing: click More, or search
in:sent. - The message is not in Sent: check search results and then Trash; another synchronized mail app or device may have deleted it. See Google’s missing-message guidance.
- You clicked Archive: archiving removes Inbox visibility but keeps the message in All Mail; it is not deletion.
- You meant to recall it: only Undo during the cancellation window can stop delivery in ordinary Gmail.
- Work or school account: administrator retention, legal hold, or archiving policies can preserve content or change what deletion does.
- Draft confusion: discarded drafts are different from sent messages and are not recovered from Trash under Google’s normal guidance.
