Select a message in Gmail and click or tap Delete. Gmail moves it to Trash first; to erase it permanently, delete it forever or empty Trash.
Delete email in Gmail on a computer
Delete one message
- Open Gmail in a web browser and find the message.
- Click the checkbox beside it.
- Click the Delete trash-can icon.
Gmail’s computer instructions are documented in Google’s message deletion guide.
Delete several messages or a whole category
- Open the Inbox, a category, a label, or All Mail.
- Click the checkbox at the top left of the message list. This initially selects messages on the current page.
- If Gmail offers Select all conversations in…, click that link to include the rest of the matching conversations.
- Click Delete.
Check the selected results before deleting: Gmail may display conversations, and deleting a conversation can move its multiple messages to Trash.
Delete one message inside a conversation
Open the conversation, find the individual message, click More beside it, then choose Delete this message. Selecting the conversation in the message list acts on the conversation, not just one message.

Delete mail in the Gmail app
Android
- Open the Gmail app.
- Touch and hold a message to select it.
- Select any other messages you want to remove, then tap Delete.
Android initially selects up to 50 messages; to continue through a larger set, scroll and select another batch. See Google’s Android instructions.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Gmail app.
- Touch and hold a message.
- Select any additional messages, then tap Delete.
Google documents the steps for iPhone and iPad.
Set a swipe action to delete
- Android: Menu → Settings → General settings → Swipe actions → Change → Delete.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → Mail swipe actions, then assign Trash to a left or right swipe.
Labels can vary with device language and locale; some interfaces call Trash “Bin.”
What happens when you delete a Gmail message?
Gmail uses labels rather than traditional folders. Deleting a message removes it from its current view and moves it to Trash. In standard Gmail, messages can generally be recovered there for up to 30 days; after that, or after you manually delete them forever, they are normally unavailable for recovery. Google explains the Trash and recovery behavior.

Archiving is different: it removes the Inbox label but keeps the message in Gmail’s All Mail. Muting removes a conversation from the Inbox and suppresses future notifications without deleting it. Moving a message to Spam reports it as unwanted. For more on these options, see Google’s archive and organization guidance.
Permanently delete mail from Trash
Warning: Emptying Trash or choosing Delete forever is irreversible through Gmail’s ordinary recovery options.
- On a computer: Click More in the left sidebar if needed, then open Trash. Select messages and click Delete forever, or choose Empty Trash now to clear it all.
- In the app: Open the Gmail menu, tap Trash, then tap Empty trash now to remove all messages there.
Some locales use Bin instead of Trash. Google’s permanent deletion instructions describe the computer controls.

Recover a deleted Gmail message
- Open Trash (or Bin).
- Select the message.
- Choose Move to, then select Inbox or another label.
This works while the message remains in Trash within the standard recovery period. A deleted draft is an exception: Google says drafts cannot be recovered from Trash. For a managed work or school account, an administrator’s retention policies may also affect what happens to deleted mail.

Delete many emails safely with Gmail search
Search first, review the results, and then select and delete the messages you no longer need. Gmail supports operators such as these; combine them when useful:
from:[email protected]— messages from a sender.after:2025/01/01 before:2025/04/01— messages in a date range.has:attachment— messages with attachments.larger:10M— messages larger than 10 MB.category:promotions— promotional mail.older_than:1y— messages older than a year.in:anywhere— includes locations normally left out of standard search, including Spam and Trash.
For example, has:attachment larger:10M narrows a search to messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. With a broad query, inspect the result set before bulk deletion. The top checkbox may select only the current page; click Select all conversations in… if Gmail offers it and you intend to include every match. Delete mail to free Google storage
Deleting messages alone may not release storage while they remain in Trash. Spam and Trash continue to count toward the storage limit until cleared. Personal Google storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos, so email may not be the only source of a full account.
- Search Gmail for large mail, for example
has:attachment larger:10M. - Review and delete messages you do not need.
- Empty Gmail Trash and Spam.
- Check Drive and Photos and clear their unwanted items and Trash as well.
- Allow time for the storage figure to update: Google says bulk-deletion updates can take up to 48–72 hours in some cases.
A full account can prevent sending or receiving Gmail messages and affect Drive and Photos; mail sent to a full account may be returned to its sender. See Google’s storage guidance.

A message is still visible after you deleted it
- Check Trash: deletion moves mail there rather than erasing it immediately.
- Confirm that you chose Delete, not Archive; archived mail remains in All Mail.
- Check whether the visible item is a conversation containing other messages, or a search result from outside the Inbox.
- Refresh Gmail if the view may not have updated yet.
You cannot find an expected message
- Search Gmail, then broaden the search to Mail & Spam & Trash or use
in:anywhere. - Check Spam and Trash.
- Review filters for actions such as Delete it or Skip Inbox.
- If another mail app is connected, review forwarding and POP/IMAP settings. Deleting a synchronized message from another device or mail client can delete the same Gmail message.
- Check whether the account is out of storage.

Trash is not visible
On a computer, click More in the left sidebar to reveal Trash. In the app, open the Gmail menu and scroll to Trash or Bin.
You deleted mail on another device
Gmail synchronizes the same message across connected devices and clients. A deletion made in one can therefore appear in the others; check Trash before trying to restore it.
Storage still looks full
Confirm that Spam and Trash are empty and inspect Drive and Photos, which share personal Google storage. After bulk deletion, Google says the storage display may take up to 48–72 hours to reflect the change.
