You do not change an “age” setting on a Microsoft account. You correct the date of birth Microsoft uses to calculate age and apply child, adult, Xbox, Store, and privacy rules.
For a normal adult account, sign in to Edit profile information, change the birth date, and select Save. If the field is locked or parental consent is involved, the adult account that granted consent must manage the change through Manage child accounts.
Change the date of birth on an adult account
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account whose information is wrong.
- Open account.microsoft.com/profile/edit-profile-information.
- Find the birth-date fields and enter your truthful date of birth.
- Select Save.
Check the email address before editing. A personal Microsoft account, Xbox-linked account, school account, and work account may be different identities. Microsoft calculates age from the saved birth date and the statutory-age rules applicable to your country or region.

A greyed-out birth-date field or a message that parental consent is required usually means Microsoft’s child-account or consent workflow controls the profile. The route depends on whether consent already exists.

No parental consent is attached
- Go to login.live.com.
- Choose I’m a parent or guardian.
- Sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account, or create one if Microsoft offers that option.
- Accept the consent form with Yes, I agree.
- Open Family Safety, then visit Manage child accounts.
- Select the affected account and choose Edit this child’s personal info.
Microsoft’s instructions generally use 18 as the adult threshold and 19 in Canada for this process. The legal age can differ by country or region. Use accurate information; do not create an account or enter a birth date to evade legitimate safety or legal requirements.
Parental consent already exists
The adult account that originally granted consent must sign in at Manage child accounts, select the account, choose Edit this child’s personal info, correct the birth date, and save it. Being the current Family Safety organizer does not necessarily transfer the original consent-management rights.
When a parent is correcting a child’s birth date
The child cannot independently remove parental consent or edit the date of birth while Microsoft classifies the account as below the applicable statutory age. The consenting parent or guardian must use the adult account that created the consent relationship and follow the child-account steps above.

Why the child account is missing from Family Safety
- You are signed in to a different adult Microsoft account.
- Another adult originally granted consent.
- Consent has not been completed.
- Your account has no permission to manage that child profile.
- The account is no longer classified as a child, so the expected editing option is no longer shown.
Family-group membership and consent authority are not always the same thing. If the original adult account is inaccessible, recover it before trying to manage the child account; Microsoft says losing that account can affect the child account’s access.
Do not confuse a wrong birth date with age verification
Microsoft may ask for age verification when you try to access or purchase adult content. That prompt is separate from correcting the stored birth date. Depending on location and the prompt, Microsoft may offer selfie-based age estimation, government identification, or an approved digital-identity service. Availability is regional; Microsoft currently lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore, and the United Kingdom for proactive verification. See Microsoft’s age-verification instructions.
Microsoft says a completed verification applies to both the Microsoft account and Xbox account, but it does not rewrite the birth date. Follow the verification flow rather than repeatedly changing profile information.

Xbox restrictions may remain after the correction
Xbox uses the Microsoft account identity and age classification, so a corrected birth date or completed verification can affect access. It will not necessarily remove every restriction immediately or automatically. Family membership, consent status, privacy and communication settings, content controls, and regional rules can still apply. Sign out and back in on affected devices after saving, but Microsoft does not promise a specific synchronization time.
If you still cannot change it
- Confirm that you are using the correct account and truthful date of birth.
- Identify the adult account that originally granted consent.
- Recover that adult account using Microsoft’s account-recovery and sign-in tools.
- If the issue persists, use Microsoft Contact Support.
Support can explain the available process and help with access problems, but Microsoft states that support agents cannot simply access and change account details on your behalf. Avoid third-party “age changers,” VPNs, registry edits, account sellers, or unofficial Xbox hacks: age classification is controlled on Microsoft’s servers and these tools cannot legitimately override consent rules.

Can I change my Microsoft-account age from an Xbox console?
Use the Microsoft account profile or Family Safety web pages instead. Xbox reflects the account’s age and restrictions, but the console is not the primary place to edit the stored birth date.

Can a child change their own birth date?
Not while Microsoft classifies the account as a child subject to consent. The adult who originally granted consent must edit the child’s personal information.
Why is the birth-date field locked?
A locked field usually indicates child-account classification or an attached parental-consent relationship. Use the original consent-giving adult account through Manage child accounts.
Why can’t my parent see my account?
The parent may be using the wrong Microsoft account, may not be the original consent giver, or consent may not have been completed. The account may also no longer be treated as a child.

Will changing my birth date remove Xbox restrictions?
Not necessarily. Family settings, consent, privacy controls, communication settings, content rules, and regional requirements can remain active.
I entered the wrong birth year. Should I enter an adult year instead?
No. Enter your truthful date of birth. False information can create further consent, verification, and account-management problems.
Does age verification change my stored birth date?
No. Age verification is a separate proof-of-age process and does not edit the profile’s recorded date of birth.

Is there a safe third-party tool for changing Microsoft-account age?
No legitimate third-party tool can override Microsoft’s server-side age classification or parental-consent controls. Use Microsoft’s account, Family Safety, recovery, and support channels only.
