If you mean Tumblr’s special Boop button, it was a real feature—but a limited-time event, not a permanent control. Tumblr’s official recap documents the event in April 2024. If you do not see a Boop button now, the event may not be active.
How to boop someone during an active Tumblr event
When Tumblr offers a Boop event, use the official app or Tumblr.com. The exact controls may change between events and platforms.
- Update Tumblr. Install the latest version available for your device.
- Open the dashboard. Look at the top of the home page for an event banner or invitation to join.
- Opt in if Tumblr prompts you. During the 2024 event, a user account described opting in from the home page and then seeing Boop controls next to profile pictures of other opted-in users. That account’s description is useful evidence of event behavior, not a permanent interface guide.
- Choose an eligible account. Look for the Boop control beside a participating user’s avatar or profile picture.
- Tap or click Boop. Select an available type if Tumblr presents choices.
- Check the event interface. Tumblr associated participation with badges and tracked different boop types, though the exact confirmation or notification behavior is not established by its recap.
Tumblr’s official recap says people used the feature on both the website and the app. The layout need not be identical on desktop, iOS, or Android.

Tumblr’s official April 8, 2024 event recap confirms a real Boop button and reports event totals. It does not establish that the feature remains available in 2026 or that Tumblr brings it back on a regular schedule. Treat the control as event-dependent: if Tumblr is not currently presenting it, you cannot make the official button appear by changing a setting.

The word “boop” can also be used informally on Tumblr, as a playful message, ask, reblog caption, GIF, or image. Those gestures are not the event button and do not count toward event totals or badges.
How to boop yourself
Self-boops were an official category in the 2024 event. If a future or active event includes the option, opt in and look in the event panel or your own profile for a self-boop control. The available documentation does not establish one universal menu path, so follow the controls shown in the current event rather than relying on an old interface description.

What the different Boop types mean
Tumblr’s recap counted five categories. It confirms that the categories existed, but does not fully document their mechanics; the names alone should not be taken as a precise description of what each action did.

Why the Boop button may be missing
In 2026, not seeing the button does not by itself mean anything is wrong with your account. The official evidence establishes an event in 2024, not a continuously available feature. If Tumblr has announced or surfaced an active event, check these possibilities in order:
- The event is not running. A past event’s control may no longer be available.
- You have not opted in. Look for an event banner or invitation on the dashboard.
- The other account is not participating or eligible. Event-era documentation indicates the control appeared beside users who had opted in; not every account should be assumed eligible.
- You are checking the wrong place. Start at the dashboard rather than an individual blog or ordinary post.
- Your app session or version is stale. Update Tumblr, fully close and reopen it, and check the dashboard again.
- The control differs by platform or rollout. Compare the official app with Tumblr.com; an event may not appear identically for every account.
- You use a third-party client. It may not support Tumblr event controls. Check in the official app or website.
If a confirmed active event still does not appear after those checks, the account may not have access to that event. Avoid old app versions, browser scripts, and third-party Boop tools; they are not reliable ways to restore an inactive feature and may put your account at risk.

What to do if the event is over
You can still send a playful, informal boop by writing “boop,” sharing a GIF, adding a caption to a reblog, or sending an ask if the recipient accepts asks. These are ordinary Tumblr interactions, not the official Boop event; they do not generate its counters or badges. Respect the recipient’s boundaries, and remember that blocking and privacy settings take precedence.
