How Do I Accept a Gift from the Microsoft Store?

To accept most Microsoft Store gifts, go to redeem.microsoft.com, sign in to the Microsoft account that should own the gift, enter its code, and select Next. Check the signed-in account before confirming: a redeemed code or balance generally cannot be transferred to another account. If the gift is a game or app, install it after redemption from the Microsoft Store, Xbox, or your account library.

First, identify what kind of gift you received

“Microsoft Store gift” can mean a gift card, a code for a specific digital item, or even a physical purchase. The right claiming process depends on what the sender gave you.

A gift email may contain a code, a link, or delivery details. Microsoft does not use one universal “accept gift” screen for every product, so follow the message for the specific item—but verify that any link leads to Microsoft before entering account details.

Redeem the gift online

1. Open https://redeem.microsoft.com/.
2. Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the gift. If you use more than one account, check the email address and, for Xbox, the gamertag.
3. Enter or paste the gift card, download code, or token. Xbox codes are generally 25 characters.
4. Select Next, review the item or value and the account shown, then follow the prompts to confirm.

Microsoft’s redemption guide covers gift cards, download codes, and tokens. If the gift is a game or app, redemption associates it with the account you used; it does not necessarily install it automatically.

Redeem on Windows or Xbox

Microsoft’s current Xbox instructions also list these device-specific routes. Labels can vary with app version, Windows release, or language; use the web page above if you cannot find the control.

Microsoft Store on Windows

1. Open Microsoft Store from Start.
2. Select the account icon at the top right, then Redeem code or gift cards.
3. Enter the code, select Next, and follow the prompts.

Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
2. Open Store, then press the View button to open the side menu.
3. Select Redeem, enter the 25-character code, select Next, and follow the prompts.

Xbox app for Windows

1. Open the Xbox app and select your gamerpic in the top-left.
2. Choose Settings.
3. Under Redeem a code, select Redeem, enter the code, then select Next and follow the prompts.

Codes cannot currently be redeemed in the Xbox mobile app, according to the Xbox redemption instructions. Use the web page, Microsoft Store on Windows, an Xbox console, or the Xbox app for Windows instead.

What happens after you redeem it?

• Gift card: its value is added to your Microsoft account balance. The balance can generally be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases, including games, apps, movies, in-app purchases, and some physical goods. Microsoft’s account-balance guidance says it cannot be used for a Microsoft 365 subscription. Eligibility and availability can depend on the product and region.
• Specific game or app: the digital item is associated with the account that redeemed it. Check its product page for platform compatibility; not every title works on both Windows and Xbox.

To find a purchased or redeemed download, check your Microsoft account’s order history and library, or search for the title in Microsoft Store or Xbox. Microsoft explains how to find and install Microsoft downloads. Balance and digital licenses are tied to the claiming account; Xbox says redeemed codes cannot be transferred, and Microsoft’s gift-card terms say account balance is non-transferable.

If the gift will not redeem or does not appear

1. Check the account before trying again. Confirm the Microsoft email and Xbox gamertag. If it was redeemed to a different account, do not assume the balance or license can be moved.
2. Check the code. Re-enter it carefully and make sure you are using the code itself, not an order number or product key for a different service.
3. Confirm the product type. Gift cards and Xbox download codes use the Microsoft redemption flow; Office keys use office.com/setup, and Windows keys use Activation settings.
4. Check region compatibility. Gift cards and digital goods can be region-restricted. Compare the purchase country or region with the one associated with your account. Do not change your region just to force a redemption: Microsoft warns that changing region can affect apps, games, subscriptions, and balance, and money does not move between regions. 5. If it says the code was already redeemed, ask the purchaser whether it was claimed earlier and preserve the receipt or order details. If the purchaser bought it from a retailer, contact that retailer about issuance or activation; otherwise contact Microsoft or Xbox Support. Replacement is not guaranteed.
6. If the item is missing after redemption, make sure you are viewing the same account, then check the library or order history. An item may be unavailable because of region, family settings, removal from the Store, or account mismatch; see Microsoft’s app visibility and installation troubleshooting.
7. If the Windows Store app is failing, update Microsoft Store and retry online at redeem.microsoft.com. For a malfunctioning Store app, Microsoft also recommends resetting its cache: press Windows key + R, type wsreset.exe, and select OK. The Store should reopen; then try again. Before redeeming for a child or someone else

Choose the recipient’s account before entering the code. If the gift is for a child, confirm with the parent or purchaser which Microsoft account should receive it; redeeming it to a parent’s account does not create a transferable balance for the child. This matters especially for gift-card value, because Microsoft says balances are non-transferable.

Keep the code private until you are ready to redeem it. Do not give it to someone claiming to be Microsoft Support, pay an extra fee to “unlock” it, or enter your password through a suspicious email link. Navigate directly to Microsoft’s redemption page instead.

If the gift email never arrived

Check spam or junk folders and confirm the recipient address and delivery status with the purchaser. Ask them to review the purchase or order history and resend or correct the delivery if possible. Do not guess at a code or use a link from an unexpected message; the purchaser or retailer is the best first contact for a missing delivery.
