Short answer: pageLoadStrategy="none" makes ChromeDriver return from driver.get() without waiting for a page-load milestone. If your screenshot command runs immediately, it captures whatever has rendered at that instant—often before deferred JavaScript, API data, images, styles, or a client-side route has finished. Use none only when you add an explicit, bounded wait for the state that proves the page is ready to capture.

What “none” changes

Selenium exposes three page-load strategies. They control when navigation hands control back to WebDriver; they do not guarantee that an application has finished rendering its user interface.

Strategy Driver return point What a screenshot may contain
normal After the document reaches complete and page resources finish downloading. Most implicit waiting, but JavaScript-driven content can still be added or changed afterward.
eager At the interactive/DOMContentLoaded milestone; other resources may still load. DOM is available sooner, while images, stylesheets and other resources can remain incomplete.
none No WebDriver page-load wait; navigation is non-blocking. Fastest return and the greatest risk of an early, partial capture unless you synchronize explicitly.

ChromeDriver implements the W3C WebDriver protocol and receives this setting through Chrome options. Selenium’s Python API accepts only normal, eager and none. With none, the browser continues fetching and executing while your test code proceeds.

Why an immediate screenshot is blank or incomplete

Consider this sequence:

  1. driver.get(url) starts navigation.
  2. ChromeDriver returns control immediately because the strategy is none.
  3. Your code calls get_screenshot_as_file().
  4. The page’s scripts, API requests, images or route components finish later.

The screenshot records step 3, not the eventual state at step 4. A response can therefore show the initial HTML shell, a spinner, unstyled text, missing images, or an empty application root. This is especially common with single-page applications: document readyState describes assets declared in the HTML, but JavaScript can continue changing the page long after that milestone.

Choose a synchronization point, not an arbitrary sleep

A reliable capture waits for evidence tied to the page’s rendering logic. Prefer a condition that is both specific and bounded:

  • Target element visible: the card, chart, heading or other object that must appear in the image.
  • Loading marker gone: wait until a known spinner or skeleton is invisible or removed.
  • Application state attribute: wait for an attribute such as data-status="ready" that your application sets after rendering.
  • Known text or count: wait for a heading, table row, or result count that proves data arrived.
  • Network-idle surrogate: if your application exposes no DOM signal, use a short, documented delay after the last required request—but keep a timeout and validate the result.

A fixed sleep can be useful as a fallback, but it is not proof of readiness: on a slow run it may be too short, and on a fast run it wastes time. Always make a timeout failure visible so an incomplete page is distinguishable from a genuinely empty page.

Python example: non-blocking navigation with an explicit wait

This complete example sets none, waits for a target element, checks that it is displayed, and captures immediately. Adjust the selector and URL to your page.

from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.common.exceptions import TimeoutException
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

URL = "https://example.com/dashboard"
TARGET = (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main .report-card")
OUTPUT = Path("dashboard.png")

options = Options()
options.page_load_strategy = "none"
# options.add_argument("--headless=new") # enable in CI if needed

driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
    driver.get(URL)
    wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 30, poll_frequency=0.2)
    element = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located(TARGET))
    if not element.is_displayed():
        raise RuntimeError("Target exists but is not displayed")
    if not driver.save_screenshot(str(OUTPUT)):
        raise RuntimeError("ChromeDriver did not save the screenshot")
except TimeoutException as exc:
    driver.save_screenshot("timeout-debug.png")
    raise RuntimeError(f"Page did not reach the capture condition: {TARGET}") from exc
finally:
    driver.quit()

The timeout is part of the diagnostic contract. When it expires, preserve a debug image, browser logs if enabled, and the current URL. Do not silently save a partial “success” file.

Useful wait patterns

Wait for a loader to disappear

wait.until(EC.invisibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".loading")))
driver.save_screenshot("ready.png")

Wait for an application state attribute

wait.until(lambda d: d.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "body").get_attribute("data-app-state") == "ready")

Wait for a minimum result count

def has_results(d):
    return len(d.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result-row")) >= 10

wait.until(has_results)

Wait for one element, then verify its contents

chart = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "sales-chart")))
wait.until(lambda d: chart.get_attribute("data-rendered") == "true")

Keep the condition close to the application’s definition of “ready.” Waiting merely for document.readyState == "complete" does not account for later JavaScript updates.

When to use normal or eager instead

Use none when you have a dependable synchronization condition and want navigation to overlap with your own setup. If you do not, eager or normal provides a safer initial milestone. They still require content validation for JavaScript-heavy pages, because neither strategy knows whether your framework has finished rendering a component.

  • Choose normal for conventional documents where complete resource loading is more valuable than early control.
  • Choose eager when DOM access should begin after DOMContentLoaded while images and other resources can load in parallel.
  • Choose none for controlled applications, test environments, or workflows with a precise readiness signal.

Capture details that affect the result

Viewport and responsive layout

Set the window size before navigation if the screenshot must represent a particular breakpoint. A wait condition can pass at one viewport and fail at another because responsive markup changes.

Lazy-loaded images

An element being visible does not always mean its image pixels have arrived. For an image capture, wait for the image’s complete property and a nonzero natural width:

image = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main img.hero")))
wait.until(lambda d: d.execute_script(
    "return arguments[0].complete && arguments[0].naturalWidth > 0;", image
))
driver.save_screenshot("hero.png")

Animations and transitions

A screenshot taken during a transition can contain an intermediate position or opacity. Disable motion with a test stylesheet, wait for the animation to end, or capture at a deterministic point in your application state.

Full-page screenshots

ChromeDriver’s viewport screenshot and a full-page workflow are different operations. A page may render additional content only after scrolling, and lazy loaders may not request those assets until they approach the viewport. If you stitch or resize screenshots, first ensure every required section has been rendered and validate the resulting dimensions.

Troubleshooting blank and partial captures

Only the app shell or spinner appears

Cause: the screenshot ran immediately after non-blocking navigation. Fix: wait for the first meaningful component or for the spinner to disappear; increase the bounded timeout only when the page legitimately needs longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The element exists but is outside the viewport or hidden

Cause: presence is weaker than visibility, or a responsive rule hides the element. Fix: use visibility_of_element_located, set a known viewport, and scroll the target into view before capture when appropriate.

Images are missing while text is present

Cause: image requests or lazy loading continue after your condition passes. Fix: wait for each required image’s complete and naturalWidth, or use an application-level “assets ready” signal.

Timeouts occur intermittently

Cause: a race in the page, a changing selector, a slow API, or a state that is never reached on error responses. Fix: make the selector stable, wait for an error state as well as success, record the current URL and a diagnostic screenshot, and fail clearly instead of returning a blank artifact.

The page is still changing after “ready”

Cause: the chosen condition proves only that one component rendered. Fix: wait for the final component or state transition needed by the image, and freeze animations or live data when reproducibility matters.

Navigation appears stuck with none

Cause: non-blocking navigation can overlap with commands that assume a new document is already active. Fix: wait for a URL change, document marker, or target element before interacting; do not treat the immediate return from get() as completion.

Performance and reliability trade-offs

none can reduce idle time because your code can begin its own setup while the browser fetches resources. The saving is workload-dependent, not a guaranteed benchmark. Every capture still pays the time required to reach its explicit condition. A short poll interval improves responsiveness but increases command traffic; a longer interval is lighter but can delay the capture slightly.

For repeatable jobs, define a readiness contract per page, use a realistic timeout, and record whether the condition succeeded, timed out, or encountered an application error. This turns a blank image into an actionable failure. If the page has no reliable signal, the implicit milestones of eager or normal are safer starting points, followed by a content check.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server when you do not want to manage ChromeDriver synchronization. Its capture pipeline accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

For AI workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Practical decision checklist

  • Do you have a selector, state attribute, or other condition that proves the exact pixels are ready?
  • Is the condition bounded by a timeout and does timeout handling save diagnostics?
  • Are lazy images, animations, responsive layout and full-page scrolling accounted for?
  • Would eager or normal be safer if no reliable condition exists?
  • Can an API or MCP workflow remove browser maintenance for this job?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does none wait for DOMContentLoaded?

No. It does not block WebDriver on a page-load milestone; your code must provide its own synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is document.readyState enough for a React or Vue screenshot?

Usually not. Ready state covers assets declared in the document, while framework JavaScript can continue inserting and updating content afterward.

What should a timeout handler save?

Save a diagnostic screenshot and record the current URL and failed condition, then raise an explicit error instead of treating the partial image as successful.
