If a website screenshot in Brave is missing an ad, has a blank space where an ad used to be, or shows nearby content in a different position, Brave Shields may be affecting what the browser loads or displays. That does not necessarily mean the page or screenshot is broken: the exact result depends on the site’s ad-slot design, its resources, and your Shields settings.
Why a Brave screenshot can look different
A screenshot records the page as Brave rendered it at capture time. Brave says Shields block third-party ads and trackers by default. If a third-party ad resource is blocked, the ad may not appear in the screenshot. What happens to the surrounding layout depends on how the site built the ad slot and how a filter acts on it.
The page may close up the space, leave an empty container, or move nearby content. Brave’s debugging guidance notes that cosmetic filtering can hide an element without removing the space its container occupies. A gap is therefore a plausible result, but it is not inevitable, and the gap alone does not identify which resource or rule caused it. Brave describes Shields and its Shields Debugging Guide explains this kind of layout issue.
Brave does not claim to remove every ad. Its default blocking targets third-party ads and trackers; first-party ads may still appear, and filtering behavior varies with site implementation and settings. The browser is not described as having a separate screenshot mode that intentionally changes the page. The screenshot difference is a consequence of the rendered page state.

What can change in the captured image
| What you see | Possible explanation | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| An ad is absent | A third-party ad or related resource may have been blocked before it rendered. | It does not prove Brave blocks all ads, or that the site has no first-party ads. |
| Blank space where an ad should be | A filter may hide the ad element while the page’s container continues to occupy space. | It does not, by itself, identify the specific filter or blocked resource. |
| Content below an ad appears higher or lower | The site may have collapsed or retained the slot, or changed its layout after a resource was blocked. | It does not show that the screenshot tool altered the page. |
| A control or page feature fails | A blocked request may be connected to the site feature, or the issue may have another cause. | One comparison cannot establish the exact cause; test one setting at a time. |
These are site-dependent outcomes, not a prediction that every page will show the same effect. Brave’s blocking policy also describes filtering as an approximation across varied site implementations. See Brave’s blocking goals and policy for that qualification.
How to tell whether Shields is involved
Use a controlled comparison rather than comparing two unrelated captures. Keep the exact URL, viewport dimensions, zoom, scroll position, page load timing, browser version, and site state steady. Record whether Shields is set to Standard or Aggressive, and note whether the difference is missing ad content, an empty slot, shifted content, or a broken feature. Those controls are practical comparison methods, not a published Brave benchmark.
- Capture a baseline. Open the page in Brave, note the browser version and the site’s Shields mode, then capture it at a known viewport, zoom, scroll position, and load state.
- Inspect the site’s Shields panel. Check the controls for the affected website rather than assuming its site-specific choice matches the global setting. Brave documents both global and per-site settings in its global and site-specific Shields settings guide.
- Change only the site setting and reload. If the page looks broken, temporarily adjust or turn off Shields for that site, reload it, and recapture using the same conditions. If the result changes, that is evidence Shields contributes to the difference; it does not reveal the exact rule or request responsible.
- Restore the intended protection setting. After the comparison, return to your preferred site setting. Lowering or disabling Shields reduces some protections; do not treat it as a universally safe permanent fix.
Brave’s exact control labels and placement can vary by version. Use the Shields panel for the current site and Brave’s settings guide for the corresponding global and site-specific controls rather than relying on an assumed menu path.

Why blank space may remain after an ad disappears
Web pages often reserve room for an ad before its creative loads. If a cosmetic filter hides the ad element but not the surrounding slot, the screenshot can show whitespace where the ad would have been. That is different from a page deliberately reserving empty space for its own layout, and the visual symptom alone cannot distinguish them.
For a deeper diagnosis, inspect the page element and relevant filter lists, as Brave’s debugging guide recommends. A site-specific Shields adjustment can help establish whether filtering is involved, but it does not identify an exact filter rule by itself. Avoid treating every empty rectangle as an ad-blocking failure: lazy loading, responsive layout, and the site’s own design can also affect what appears at a particular moment.
Make screenshot comparisons reproducible
A useful before-and-after test changes one variable at a time. First compare the same URL and page state with the current Shields configuration. Then adjust only the site’s Shields mode or setting and repeat. If you also alter a custom content filter, treat that as a separate test and record the change.

- URL and site state: use the exact same address and page state; personalized or changing content can otherwise differ independently of Shields.
- Viewport and position: hold viewport width and height, zoom, and scroll position steady. Responsive designs may rearrange ad slots when the viewport changes.
- Timing: capture at the same point in page loading. An ad or image that has not loaded yet can look like a blocked resource.
- Browser configuration: note the Brave version, Shields mode, and any relevant site-specific or custom filter settings.
- Observed result: describe what changed precisely: absent ad, blank slot, shifted content, or a feature that stopped working.
Do not infer how often Brave causes screenshot differences from a single example. Brave’s official materials do not establish a population statistic for the frequency or size of such differences.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot in an automated workflow rather than a controlled comparison of Brave itself, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its captures can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. This is a different capture workflow, not a way to reproduce Brave’s exact Shields rendering.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures the target page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. ScreenshotNeo says bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Troubleshooting common screenshot differences
The ad is missing, but the rest of the page looks normal
This is consistent with a blocked third-party ad resource. Compare the same page after changing only its Shields setting if you need to check whether Shields contributes. Do not interpret the missing ad as proof that all ads are blocked.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
There is a blank rectangle where the ad belongs
The page may retain the ad container while the ad element is hidden. Inspect the relevant page element and filter behavior; the blank area by itself does not pinpoint the cause. A site-level Shields test can show whether changing Shields affects the layout.
The page breaks when Shields is on
Brave offers Standard and Aggressive blocking; Aggressive provides more protection and can increase the risk of site breakage. Try a temporary site-specific adjustment, reload, and compare. If it fixes the feature, restore the setting that suits your needs after testing rather than assuming the site needs Shields disabled permanently.

The two screenshots differ even though Shields did not change
Check the URL, viewport, zoom, scroll position, page load timing, browser version, and site state. Then repeat the capture while holding them constant. A difference across inconsistent conditions is not enough to attribute the result to ad or tracker blocking.
Turning off Shields did not remove the blank space
That outcome weakens the case that the current Shields setting caused the gap, but it does not identify another cause. The site may reserve space in its own layout, or the page may not have reached the same load state. Recheck the controlled conditions and inspect the element rather than assuming a different blocker is responsible.
