BigBlueButton’s public development guide documents how to run its HTML5 client against a working BigBlueButton server and validate real meeting flows in a browser. It does not identify a canonical Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, or WebDriver suite, nor publish a current CI command for one. So the documented approach is to prepare the server, run the client from source, and check the user-visible meeting journey; the exact browser-test runner used by the project is not established by the cited public pages.

What “end-to-end” means for BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton is not just a web page. Its 3.0 development guide describes a system with a web and API layer, meeting-state services, WebRTC media services, recording and playback services, GraphQL services, and the HTML5 client. A browser test that checks only whether the meeting page loads cannot establish that a meeting works end to end: the client must communicate with the server and its related services.

For a meaningful client-level test, begin with a functioning BigBlueButton server. Then exercise a real meeting journey: authenticate or otherwise enter through the chosen test setup, create or join a meeting, connect audio, use the webcam, share a screen, and record and play back a session. The development guide specifically recommends these user-facing checks. A failing step may reflect a client change, a server or media service problem, or test-environment configuration; the browser alone does not distinguish those causes.

Run the HTML5 client from source

The official BigBlueButton 3.0 development guide describes a local development workflow in which the client is served through Nginx in development configuration and uses a working BigBlueButton server. It recommends Docker-based development for Linux hosts. Greenlight or API Mate can be used to create and join meetings while validating the setup.

  1. Prepare a functioning BigBlueButton server. Follow the BigBlueButton 3.0 development guide’s server and development-environment instructions. The guide treats a working server as a prerequisite; running the client alone is not a substitute for the server and its services.
  2. Clone the BigBlueButton repository. Use the repository setup instructions for the version and development environment you intend to work with.
  3. Change into the HTML5 client directory. From the repository root, run cd bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton-html5/.
  4. Install the client dependencies. Run npm install in that directory and resolve any dependency or environment errors before evaluating browser behavior.
  5. Start the development client. Run npm start. In the documented development configuration, Nginx serves the client, which then exercises the working server and its services.
  6. Create or join a meeting and test the flow. Use Greenlight or API Mate as appropriate to create and enter a meeting, then validate the actual functions your change could affect.

These commands come from the BigBlueButton 3.0 guide’s client-development workflow; they are not evidence of a project-wide automated E2E test command. Check the guide for the matching release and environment details before using the workflow with a different BigBlueButton version.

What to cover in a browser-driven meeting test

Organize checks around outcomes a participant can observe, and identify which system boundary each check touches. A UI assertion that a control was clicked is weaker than confirming that the expected meeting behavior followed.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
  • Entry and meeting state: confirm the intended user can reach the meeting and that the meeting is in the expected state. Include the relevant login or join path in the test setup.
  • Audio bridge: join audio and verify the participant reaches the expected connected state. A browser-side click alone does not prove the audio service path is healthy.
  • Webcam: grant or configure browser camera permission as appropriate for the test environment, enable the webcam, and check the visible meeting result. Permission prompts and device availability can make otherwise identical runs behave differently.
  • Screen sharing: invoke sharing and verify the expected shared content is visible to the meeting. Screen-capture permission and browser support are environment factors that should be controlled or recorded.
  • Recording and playback: record a session, then confirm the resulting recording can be played back. This extends coverage beyond the live client into recording and playback services.
  • Failure diagnostics: preserve enough context to tell whether the client, server, media path, permissions, or test data caused a failure. Repeatable meeting setup is essential if failures are to be compared across code changes.

The guide establishes these as development validation actions, not a prescribed automated test specification. Teams can automate suitable steps with an external browser runner, but media permissions, meeting lifecycle, service readiness, and repeatable test data need deliberate handling.

Does BigBlueButton use Cypress, Playwright, or Selenium?

The public BigBlueButton pages covered here do not name a canonical Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, or WebDriver suite and do not provide a current CI command for such a suite. It would therefore be inaccurate to state that BigBlueButton uses one of those frameworks based on this documentation.

Cypress is one possible external choice for a team building browser tests around a BigBlueButton client. Its official documentation describes E2E tests as visiting an application in a real browser and interacting through the UI, and documents integrations with GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket. That establishes Cypress as an example option, not as BigBlueButton’s selected runner. No equivalent BigBlueButton-specific framework selection is established here.

Choose a runner by testing your actual meeting journey rather than by framework name. Assess browser coverage, synchronization with WebRTC and other media-heavy interactions, CI integration, screenshots or video for failure debugging, meeting and test-data lifecycle control, and whether tests run against a disposable local server or shared environment. The available documentation does not provide comparable BigBlueButton-specific measurements for those dimensions, so validate them in your own deployment.

Test BigBlueButton API calls safely

API checks are related to browser testing but are a separate layer. BigBlueButton’s API reference says that almost all API calls are server-to-server and warns against putting the shared secret in a web page or making API calls from JavaScript running in a browser. A browser test should not expose that secret in client code, browser storage, or a request visible to the user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For local API experimentation, the API reference documents API Mate, which generates checksums in the browser so developers can test calls against a local BigBlueButton server. Use it to explore signed calls without treating a production shared secret as browser-side application configuration. Keep the distinction clear: API Mate helps test API calls; it is not evidence of an end-to-end browser runner for the HTML5 client.

Debug failures by separating client and environment

When a local client change appears to break a meeting, compare the modified client with the packaged client against the same functioning server and equivalent meeting conditions. The development guide recommends swapping a modified client with the packaged client as a way to distinguish a code defect from an environment defect. Keep the meeting flow and setup consistent in that comparison; changing the server, permissions, or test data at the same time makes the result harder to interpret.

  • Client does not start after npm start: check that the shell is in bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton-html5/, dependencies were installed there with npm install, and the development environment matches the guide for the release you are using.
  • Client loads but cannot complete a meeting action: first verify the BigBlueButton server and relevant services are functioning, then compare the changed client with the packaged client. A page that renders is not proof that meeting-state, media, or recording services are healthy.
  • Audio or webcam checks fail intermittently: inspect the browser’s device and permission conditions and confirm the media services are available. Make those conditions consistent between runs before attributing the failure to a client change.
  • Recording exists but playback fails: treat recording and playback as distinct parts of the system and validate both, as the guide’s workflow calls for recording and playing back sessions.
  • An API test requires a checksum: use API Mate for local call testing, and do not move the shared secret into browser JavaScript. Keep API testing separate from UI-driven meeting checks.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is not a BigBlueButton test runner: it captures a page, so it cannot join a meeting, validate WebRTC, or replace the end-to-end flow above. It can be useful when you need a screenshot of a public page or a rendered state for visual review. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://bigbluebutton.org -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots and page information. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo for the service and sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test the HTML5 client without a working BigBlueButton server?

Not as a meaningful end-to-end client test: the documented development workflow depends on a functioning server and its services.

Does API Mate replace a browser test runner?

No. The API reference describes it as a way to generate checksums and test API calls against a local server, rather than automate a participant’s meeting journey.
