Hotspot Shield is the better fit for conventional VPN use; Psiphon Pro is the better fit when your main problem is blocked websites or services. They are not equivalent “free VPNs”: Hotspot Shield is a consumer VPN, while Psiphon is a censorship-circumvention system. Neither should be treated as an anonymity tool, and neither free option is a dependable choice for demanding streaming or high-risk privacy work.

Hotspot Shield’s current plan page lists Premium features including unlimited data, more locations, and up to 10 simultaneous devices. Exact features and protocols depend on platform and plan. Psiphon’s technical description explains that its centrally managed proxy network is built to help users get around censorship, rather than to provide a conventional privacy-first VPN.
Choose based on what you need
For censorship circumvention: Psiphon Pro
Psiphon is the more relevant first choice if a school, workplace, ISP, or government network blocks the sites you need. Its SSH-based tunnel adds an obfuscation layer intended to resist protocol fingerprinting, and its client can look for replacement Psiphon servers when one becomes unavailable. The system also distributes subsets of servers to users rather than exposing the entire network to each client. These are design features, not a promise that Psiphon will work on a particular network.
Hotspot Shield also says its Hydra protocol can make VPN traffic harder to block, but that is a vendor claim, not evidence that it will outperform Psiphon against a specific firewall. Blocking changes over time and by network; no circumvention app can promise access everywhere. If the consequences of using a tool could be serious, consider the local legal and personal risks before connecting.

For streaming and mainstream VPN features: Hotspot Shield Premium
Hotspot Shield markets Premium for streaming and lists services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and YouTube on its plan page. That makes it the more plausible choice for video than Psiphon, but a list of services is not a guarantee: streaming platforms block VPN and proxy addresses, and results vary by service, country, and server.
Psiphon is not positioned as a streaming-unblocking VPN. Its purpose is access through censorship, and independent review coverage has described free-service speeds around 2 Mbps as a limitation for HD video. Treat that as review-reported performance, not a permanent specification. Do not assume Psiphon cannot play video at all; it is simply a poor choice when reliable, high-quality streaming is the priority.
For public Wi-Fi: generally Hotspot Shield, with platform checks
A VPN tunnel can help protect traffic contents from people operating the Wi-Fi network or from an ISP, provided the traffic actually goes through the tunnel. Hotspot Shield is the more conventional fit because its consumer app offers VPN controls such as a kill switch and Smart VPN/split tunneling on supported platforms and plans. Check the current app’s feature list for your device rather than assuming those controls are universal. A VPN does not make a compromised device safe or conceal activity from websites where you are signed in.

For anonymity or high-risk privacy: neither
Psiphon explicitly says it is not designed for anti-surveillance or anonymity, and its FAQ points users who require anonymity toward Tor. A VPN, including Hotspot Shield, can change which observer sees your traffic, but it does not erase account identity, cookies, browser history, payment records, or other traces. If anonymity is the goal, choose tools and practices for a defined threat model rather than assuming that a VPN provides it.
For speed, gaming, and torrenting: do not infer a winner from claims
Hotspot Shield highlights its proprietary Hydra protocol and advertises speeds of up to 1 Gbps for Premium. That is a stated maximum, not a comparative test or a speed users should expect on every connection. Its Basic plan page lists an “up to 2 Mbps” speed limit. Psiphon’s speed varies with route, network blocking, and mode; the cited review’s approximate figure should not be treated as a fixed cap. To compare them fairly, test the same device and network, noting download and upload speed, latency, jitter, connection time, and reconnection behavior. Results on nearby servers may differ sharply from long-distance routes or a network actively blocking VPNs.
Neither service should be recommended for torrenting without checking current P2P rules, server behavior, leak protections, and account terms. Psiphon is not marketed as a file-sharing VPN, and its privacy policy describes session-level data such as connection duration and bytes transferred.

Free plans: verify the offer shown to you
Hotspot Shield’s main plan page currently lists Basic as free, with one U.S. virtual location, up to 2 Mbps, 500 MB of daily data, one device, and support-center-only assistance. However, other sections of Hotspot Shield’s official pages describe Basic as having unlimited bandwidth and data. Those statements conflict; do not assume the tier is either capped or unlimited without checking the offer displayed in your app or signup flow. The limit may vary by page, platform, location, or offer.

For either free option, check the data and speed terms before relying on it for a long video call, large download, or streaming session. Free access is not evidence of anonymity or suitability for sensitive work.

Privacy: what the providers say and what a tunnel does
“Encrypted” and “anonymous” are not synonyms. Encryption can prevent a local Wi-Fi operator or ISP from reading the contents of properly tunneled traffic, but the VPN provider becomes an important point of trust. Websites can still recognize logged-in accounts, cookies, and browser fingerprints, while metadata such as connection timing and traffic volume can remain informative.
Psiphon’s privacy policy says it collects the protocol used, connection duration, bytes transferred, geographic and ISP information derived from the user’s IP address, and byte totals for some domains or server IP addresses. It says the originating IP address is discarded immediately and that user activity data is retained for up to 90 days before aggregation and deletion, subject to the policy’s backup details. Read the policy directly for the full scope and current terms. Psiphon warns that traffic fingerprinting can reveal information about browsing activity and says the service is not designed specifically for anti-surveillance.

That should not be expanded into “collects no data.” Browsing-activity claims are distinct from information that may be collected for accounts, devices, payments, diagnostics, advertising, or other services. Review Hotspot Shield’s current privacy policy and legal terms for the product and plan you use.

Platforms and whether all your traffic is covered
Hotspot Shield lists Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, with Smart TV support and some additional features on Premium. Its protocols and advanced controls vary by app version and operating system: for example, its protocol guidance says WireGuard availability in the referenced documentation is limited to Android and Mac. Confirm the current settings in your own app. See the provider’s protocol guide and feature guide.
Psiphon currently lists apps for Android, iOS, Apple-silicon Macs, and Windows 10 and 11, as well as Psiphon Browser for iOS, on its download page. Psiphon Pro for Android is not available in every country. How much traffic is covered depends on the app and mode:
- Windows: VPN mode routes the whole device. SSH/proxy modes route only applications configured to use Psiphon’s local HTTP/SOCKS proxies.
- iOS app: Psiphon says the app routes traffic from iPhone or iPad apps through its network.
- Psiphon Browser for iOS: Only traffic inside that browser is routed.
Do not assume that an established Psiphon connection means every application is using it. Its FAQ notes that misconfigured browser proxy settings or apps that do not use the local proxy can leave traffic outside the tunnel. It also documents limits with hotspot and USB tethering.

What to try when a connection fails
Hotspot Shield
- Open Settings and select VPN protocol.
- Try Automatic or another protocol offered by your platform instead of Hydra, then reconnect.
- Confirm that your operating system supports the protocol and feature you are trying to use; available choices vary by app.
- If the app cannot create or retain its VPN profile, follow the current support instructions to remove and recreate that profile or reinstall the app.
Hotspot Shield’s protocol troubleshooting guidance recommends trying Automatic or Hydra where available and notes that switching protocols can resolve connection problems.
Psiphon
- If a connection repeatedly fails, try another available Psiphon mode; a network may block one protocol but not another.
- On Windows, use VPN mode if you need full-device routing. If VPN mode is slow or pages fail to load, the router or firewall may block L2TP/IPsec; check whether pass-through is permitted on a network you control.
- In proxy mode, verify that the browser or application is configured to use Psiphon’s local proxy. A working Psiphon window alone does not prove every app is tunneled.
- If an Android upgrade causes problems, consult Psiphon’s current FAQ and reinstall only from an official source if needed.
- If the normal download site is blocked, Psiphon offers direct Android downloads and an email delivery route on its download page. Verify the source before sideloading.
Some issues are network restrictions, not an app defect. Avoid changing proxy, firewall, or VPN settings on a school or workplace device unless you are permitted to do so.
Verdict
Choose Hotspot Shield Premium if you want a mainstream VPN for everyday browsing, streaming, public Wi-Fi, and consumer features—after confirming platform support and the current plan terms. Choose Psiphon Pro if the immediate need is reaching blocked content and you accept variable performance and a tool that is not designed for anonymity. For anonymity, torrenting, or high-risk work, neither should be a default recommendation: assess the threat model, service policies, routing behavior, and local risks first.
