A June 10, 2025 report said a purported standard HONOR Magic8 prototype was being tested with a periscope telephoto camera. That claim was later validated in the Chinese retail listing: the standard Magic8 launched with a 64MP periscope telephoto camera, 3x optical zoom and advertised 120x digital zoom. The original report was still a leak at the time, and it did not establish the final sensor or lens specifications.
What the June 2025 leak actually said
GizmoChina reported on June 10, 2025 that a current, purported standard HONOR Magic8 prototype was being tested with a periscope telephoto camera. The wording referred to the regular Magic8, not the Magic8 Pro, Ultra or RSR Porsche Design editions.
The report presented the camera as a sign that longer-range optics might reach HONOR’s standard model. It also stressed that the full hardware specifications were unconfirmed. Other details in the report were expectations or leak claims, not established specifications:
- 6.58-inch flat display
- 1.5K resolution and 2.5D glass
- Ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor
- Wireless charging
- IP68/IP69 protection
- A next-generation Snapdragon flagship chipset
No official HONOR statement, prototype photograph, sensor-size disclosure or optical-zoom figure accompanied the camera claim. A prototype can also change before production, so the report did not prove that its exact lens and sensor would ship unchanged.

What a periscope telephoto camera does
A periscope camera folds the light path inside the phone, allowing a longer effective focal length without requiring a conventional telephoto lens to extend straight through the handset. That makes tighter framing practical for distant subjects, portraits, travel scenes and stage events.
“Periscope” describes the optical layout, not image quality. Results also depend on sensor area, aperture, optical stabilization, autofocus, image processing and how the phone handles zoom levels between the native lens and its maximum advertised setting. A periscope camera therefore does not automatically mean the longest or best zoom in its class.

What the retail Magic8 ultimately delivered
HONOR’s Chinese product page confirms that the standard Magic8 includes:
- 64MP periscope telephoto camera
- 3x optical zoom
- Up to 120x advertised digital zoom
- f/2.5 aperture
- CIPA 5.0 professional-grade stabilization claim
The central leak was therefore accurate: a periscope camera did reach the standard retail model. The 64MP resolution, f/2.5 aperture, 3x figure and CIPA rating were confirmed later by HONOR, not by the June report itself. The available evidence also does not establish whether the specific prototype described in 2025 was identical to the production configuration.

Standard Magic8 versus Magic8 Pro
The two phones should not be treated as having the same telephoto system. HONOR’s Magic8 Pro launch announcement describes a substantially larger and higher-resolution camera.
| Feature | HONOR Magic8 | HONOR Magic8 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Telephoto resolution | 64MP | 200MP Ultra Night Telephoto Camera |
| Optical zoom | 3x | 3.7x |
| Telephoto sensor | Size not stated on the cited product page | 1/1.4-inch |
| Aperture | f/2.5 | f/2.6 |
| Stabilization | HONOR advertises CIPA 5.0 professional-grade stabilization | OIS |
| Best fit | Lower-cost entry to dedicated periscope reach | Users prioritizing larger-sensor telephoto and night-zoom hardware |
The standard model’s 3x optical range is useful, but it is shorter than a 5x telephoto design. The Pro’s 200MP, 1/1.4-inch unit is a different class of hardware on paper; megapixels alone do not determine results, but the larger sensor and OIS give the Pro a stronger specification for demanding telephoto and low-light use.

How to interpret the 120x figure
The Magic8’s 120x number is an advertised digital zoom limit. It is not 120x optical magnification and should not be compared directly with the phone’s 3x optical lens. Beyond the native optical range, the phone relies increasingly on cropping, multi-frame processing and digital enlargement, so fine detail generally becomes less dependable as magnification rises.
Launch dates, prices and regional availability
China launch
HONOR announced the Magic8 series in China on October 15, 2025. The starting prices were RMB 4,499 for the Magic8 and RMB 5,699 for the Magic8 Pro, according to HONOR’s launch announcement. Those are China launch prices, not a universal global MSRP.

UK availability
HONOR announced the Magic8 Pro’s UK launch on January 8, 2026. The current UK buying page has shown the Pro from £849.99 when using its displayed promotional code. The page also displays a HONOR Points campaign dated August 2 through September 7, 2026. Both the price and promotion are UK-specific and time-sensitive.
United States and imported models
The cited official pages do not establish standard Magic8 retail availability or pricing in the United States. Anyone importing a China model should verify cellular bands, software and Google-service support, warranty coverage, taxes and return rights before buying. Regional versions can differ in network support, memory configurations and software.
Buying decision
- Choose the standard Magic8 if you want a dedicated periscope camera at the lower China launch price and 3x optical reach is sufficient.
- Choose the Magic8 Pro if telephoto detail, a larger sensor and the Pro’s night-zoom positioning matter more than the price difference.
- Check your market first if you are outside China or the UK; neither the China launch price nor the UK promotion proves availability in another country.
Verdict
The June 2025 story was a genuine prototype leak, not a confirmed specification sheet. Its key prediction survived the transition to retail: HONOR’s standard Chinese Magic8 received a periscope telephoto camera. The production phone is best understood as a 3x, 64MP alternative to the more ambitious 3.7x, 200MP telephoto system in the Pro, rather than as an equivalent camera in a cheaper shell.
