Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) now uses smart security lanes with 3D, 360-degree CT X-ray scanners. At a marked smart lane, passengers can generally leave laptops, mobile phones and other permitted items inside their carry-on while the bag is screened. In Terminal 2, HKIA specifically confirms that bottled liquids in containers under 100ml can also remain inside the bag.
This is a change to the screening process, not an end to aviation liquid restrictions. The published 100ml-per-container rule, dangerous-goods restrictions, transfer screening and airline or destination requirements still apply.
What the security upgrade changes
Traditional checkpoint X-rays create a mostly two-dimensional image, so passengers are often told to remove laptops, phones, liquids and other dense objects and place them in trays. HKIA’s smart lanes use computed-tomography (CT) equipment to create a three-dimensional, 360-degree view of the bag.
At these lanes, the airport says passengers can normally put the carry-on directly on the belt with qualifying electronics and liquids still inside. The system also includes automatic tray recirculation, tray sterilisation and alerts for items left behind, according to HKIA’s June 2024 announcement.

The scanner does not make a prohibited item legal. Security staff can still require a bag to be opened or an item to be removed.
Does this mean Hong Kong has scrapped the 100ml liquid rule?
No. HKIA’s general security guidance still says liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage should normally be in containers of no more than 100ml, packed in one transparent, resealable bag with a capacity of no more than one litre. HKIA’s security guidance and liquids FAQ remain the safest baseline when packing.
The newer wording means that a permitted small bottle can stay inside your carry-on while it is scanned. It does not mean a 500ml bottle, an unrestricted amount of liquid or a dangerous substance can pass simply because a CT scanner is present.

Where are the smart lanes available?
Terminal 2
HKIA opened its new Terminal 2 departure facilities on May 27, 2026. The airport says all 15 smart security channels in T2 allow passengers to keep laptops and bottled liquids under 100ml inside their carry-on during screening. T2 is aimed primarily at leisure and regional short-haul departures, while Terminal 1 remains important for long-haul and transfer operations. Terminal 1
HKIA began a phased smart-screening rollout in July 2024. The first phase started on July 2 in the North and South Departures Immigration Halls. HKIA’s 2024 airport publication described a planned system of 50 smart screening channels and 32 full-body scanners, installed in phases. The airport’s public pages do not identify every current T1 lane, so follow the signs at the checkpoint and do not assume that all lanes have identical equipment.
What may remain in your carry-on?
At a smart lane, ordinary electronics such as laptops, mobile phones and similar devices can generally remain in the bag. Permitted liquids, aerosols and gels may also remain inside when the lane and staff allow it; T2’s current announcement specifically confirms bottled liquid under 100ml.
That permission concerns where the item is during screening, not whether the item is allowed in the first place. Flammable or corrosive liquids, gas cylinders, weapons and other dangerous goods remain restricted. HKIA also warns that spare lithium batteries and portable power banks must not be placed in checked baggage; keep them in cabin baggage in accordance with the applicable rules.

- Each container should hold no more than 100ml.
- Place the containers in one transparent, resealable bag.
- The bag should have a capacity of no more than one litre, with the contents fitting comfortably inside.
A smart lane may let you leave that bag inside the carry-on, but it does not remove the size or packaging requirement. A larger container may be rejected, discarded or require transfer to checked baggage.
Medical, infant and dietary liquids
HKIA provides exceptions for items such as medication, insulin and medically necessary needles, baby milk and food, and special-diet products. Larger medically necessary liquids or drinks may be allowed after inspection. Keep the items accessible and carry supporting medical evidence where possible. Security officers can ask for documentation and decide whether the quantity is reasonable; an exemption is not an automatic pass.
What happens if the scanner flags your bag?
- Place the bag on the belt as directed and leave permitted items inside at a marked smart lane.
- Wait for the screening result rather than collecting the bag immediately.
- If an officer requests a secondary inspection, open the bag or remove the specified item.
- Follow the officer’s instructions even if the item normally stays inside at that lane.
CT screening reduces routine unpacking; it does not guarantee that a bag will not be searched. HKIA security officers retain final authority over unacceptable liquids and other articles.
Transfer passengers face a separate process
Passengers beginning a journey in Hong Kong and passengers connecting through HKIA should not assume they use the same checkpoint. HKIA says transfer passengers carrying liquids in tamper-evident sealed bags may undergo enhanced screening. Staff may ask for the liquids to be removed, inspect them and place them in a new tamper-evident bag.

Duty-free or onboard liquid purchases above 100ml may be accepted only under specified conditions, including approved purchase, intact tamper-evident packaging and proof of purchase. The onward airport or airline can impose additional requirements. See HKIA’s transfer guidance and FAQ on transfer liquids.
U.S.-bound flights and connecting airports
HKIA warns that additional measures required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security may apply to some electronic devices carried by passengers departing for the United States. Check with your airline before travel. A smart lane at Hong Kong does not override U.S. requirements, an airline’s procedure or screening at a later connecting airport.

The 100ml rule concerns liquids in cabin baggage at passenger screening. Ordinary liquids in checked baggage are not subject to that cabin-screening limit, but dangerous-goods and airline restrictions still apply. A practical packing checklist
- Confirm whether your departure is from Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or a transfer checkpoint.
- Keep every cabin-liquid container within 100ml unless a documented exception applies.
- Continue using the one-litre transparent resealable bag.
- Keep medicine, infant food and supporting documents easy to reach.
- Pack power banks and spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage, not checked baggage.
- Use a lane marked for smart screening when available, but follow the instructions displayed there.
- Allow extra time if you are transferring, flying to the United States or carrying items likely to need secondary inspection.

Can I take a 500ml bottle through the new scanner?
Not on the basis of the scanner alone. HKIA’s published cabin rule remains a maximum container size of 100ml, subject to limited exemptions.
Do transfer passengers get the same no-removal procedure?
Not necessarily. Transfer checkpoints can apply enhanced screening, including inspection and repackaging of tamper-evident liquid bags.
The Bottom Line
Hong Kong’s CT security lanes make screening less disruptive: at the appropriate lane, laptops, phones and permitted small liquids can stay in your carry-on. They do not abolish the 100ml liquid limit, dangerous-goods rules or the authority of security staff, airlines and onward airports.
