Homebrew lässt sich auf einem unterstützten Mac über das offizielle Installationsskript einrichten. Entscheidend sind die richtige Mac-Architektur, die Xcode Command Line Tools und die anschließende Shell-Konfiguration. Diese Anleitung führt durch Installation, Prüfung, erste Pakete und die häufigsten Fehler.

Erfahrene Nutzer benötigen normalerweise diese Schritte:

Was ist Homebrew?
Homebrew ist ein Paketmanager für macOS. Damit installieren, aktualisieren und entfernen Sie Kommandozeilenprogramme, Bibliotheken und Entwicklungsumgebungen über das Terminal. Über sogenannte Casks lassen sich außerdem viele grafische macOS-Apps installieren.
brew install wget
brew install --cask firefoxHomebrew ergänzt den Mac App Store, ersetzt ihn aber nicht. Verfügbar sind Pakete aus den offiziellen Homebrew-Quellen und gegebenenfalls aus zusätzlich eingebundenen Taps.

Sie benötigen:
- einen Mac mit Apple-Silicon- oder 64-Bit-Intel-Prozessor,
- eine unterstützte macOS-Version,
- Administratorzugang,
- eine Internetverbindung und
- die Xcode Command Line Tools oder vollständiges Xcode.
Nach der aktuellen Homebrew-Dokumentation ist macOS Sonoma 14 oder höher auf offiziell unterstützter Apple-Hardware die unterstützte Konfiguration. Catalina 10.15 bis Ventura 13 können teilweise funktionieren, gelten aber nicht als offiziell unterstützt. macOS Mojave 10.14 und ältere Versionen laufen mit aktuellen Homebrew-Versionen nicht zuverlässig beziehungsweise werden nicht unterstützt. Prüfen Sie vor der Installation die aktuelle Supportliste, da sich diese Grenzen ändern können.
Apple Silicon oder Intel feststellen
Über macOS
- Öffnen Sie das Apple-Menü.
- Wählen Sie Über diesen Mac.
- Bei Apple Silicon sehen Sie einen Eintrag wie Chip: Apple M….
- Bei Intel-Macs steht dort Prozessor, etwa „Intel Core i7“.
Apple beschreibt die Unterscheidung in seiner Dokumentation zu Mac-Prozessoren.
Über das Terminal
uname -mTypische Ergebnisse sind:
arm64 # Apple Silicon
x86_64 # Intel oder eine Intel-Shell unter RosettaAuf einem Apple-Silicon-Mac kann das Terminal im Intel-Modus laufen. Dann meldet uname -m möglicherweise x86_64, obwohl der Mac physisch einen Apple-Chip besitzt. Das kann zu einer zweiten Homebrew-Installation unter /usr/local führen.
Command Line Tools installieren
Für Homebrew ist das vollständige Xcode in der Regel nicht nötig. Die separaten Xcode Command Line Tools enthalten die benötigte Toolchain, SDKs und Manpages. Vollständiges Xcode benötigen Sie nur für Xcode-spezifische Werkzeuge oder Entwicklungsaufgaben.

xcode-select --installBestätigen Sie im macOS-Dialog Installieren, akzeptieren Sie die Lizenzbedingungen und warten Sie bis zum Abschluss. Prüfen Sie die Installation anschließend:
xcode-select --print-pathEine mögliche Ausgabe lautet:
/Library/Developer/CommandLineToolsWenn vollständiges Xcode aktiv ist, kann stattdessen beispielsweise /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer erscheinen. Apple erklärt die Installation und Konfiguration in der Dokumentation zu den Command Line Tools.
Homebrew mit dem offiziellen Installer installieren
Kopieren Sie ausschließlich den Befehl aus der offiziellen Homebrew-Installerquelle:

Das Skript zeigt vor dem Start unter anderem das Zielverzeichnis, anzulegende Verzeichnisse und geplante Änderungen an. Prüfen Sie diese Angaben und bestätigen Sie mit der Eingabetaste.
macOS kann anschließend nach dem Administratorpasswort fragen. Während der Eingabe erscheinen im Terminal keine Zeichen und oft auch keine Sternchen. Das ist normal. Geben Sie das Passwort ein und drücken Sie die Eingabetaste.
Eine Standardinstallation verwendet diese Präfixe:

Diese Pfade sind nicht zufällig gewählt: Homebrew kann dort bevorzugt vorgefertigte Binärpakete, sogenannte Bottles, verwenden. Benutzerdefinierte Pfade können dagegen häufiger Quellcode-Kompilierungen, zusätzliche Abhängigkeiten und schwerer reproduzierbare Fehler verursachen. Verwenden Sie deshalb nach Möglichkeit den Standardpfad; siehe auch die Homebrew-FAQ.
Homebrew zur Shell hinzufügen
Nach der Installation kann Homebrew bereits vorhanden sein, ohne dass der Befehl brew gefunden wird. Ursache ist meist, dass das Homebrew-Präfix noch nicht in der Shell-Umgebung steht.

Am zuverlässigsten: Übernehmen Sie die beiden Zeilen, die der Installer am Ende ausgibt. Für die standardmäßige zsh-Shell sehen die Beispiele typischerweise so aus.

Bei anderen Shells können andere Startdateien relevant sein, etwa ~/.bash_profile oder ~/.bashrc. Die Homebrew-Manpage beschreibt auch brew shellenv für verschiedene Shells.
Installation überprüfen
Öffnen Sie bei Bedarf ein neues Terminalfenster und führen Sie aus:

brew doctor.
brew doctor ist ein Diagnosewerkzeug. Eine Warnung bedeutet nicht automatisch, dass Homebrew unbrauchbar ist. Lesen Sie die vollständige Meldung und beheben Sie nur das konkret genannte Problem.

brew update und brew upgrade sind nicht dasselbe: Der erste Befehl aktualisiert die Paketinformationen, der zweite die bereits installierten Pakete.
Häufige Fehler beheben
„brew: command not found“
Prüfen Sie zunächst, ob Homebrew in einem der Standardpfade liegt:
ls /opt/homebrew/bin/brew
ls /usr/local/bin/brewFühren Sie anschließend den passenden Befehl aus:

eval "$(/usr/local/bin/brew shellenv)"Damit die Änderung dauerhaft bleibt, übernehmen Sie die entsprechende Zeile in die passende Shell-Startdatei, bei zsh normalerweise ~/.zprofile.
Command-Line-Tools- oder Xcode-Fehler
Prüfen Sie das aktive Entwicklerverzeichnis:
xcode-select --print-pathStarten Sie die Installation beziehungsweise Aktualisierung erneut:
xcode-select --installNach einem macOS-Upgrade können die Command Line Tools veraltet oder inkompatibel sein. Suchen Sie dann über die macOS-Softwareaktualisierung beziehungsweise softwareupdate nach einer passenden Version. Einzelne Werkzeuge wie xcodebuild gehören zu vollständigem Xcode und nicht zwingend zum separaten Command-Line-Tools-Paket.

Nutzen Sie alle vier Prüfungen:
arch
uname -m
command -v brew
brew --prefixTypische native Kombinationen sind arm64 mit /opt/homebrew sowie x86_64 mit /usr/local. Andere Kombinationen sind nicht automatisch defekt, deuten aber häufig auf Rosetta, eine gemischte Umgebung oder eine alte Installation hin.
Zwei Homebrew-Installationen
Löschen Sie nicht sofort eine Installation. Sichern Sie bei einer alten Intel-Installation auf Apple Silicon zunächst den Paketbestand:
arch -x86_64 /usr/local/bin/brew bundle dump --file=~/intel-BrewfilePrüfen Sie die erzeugte Datei, installieren Sie die benötigten Pakete in der nativen Installation neu und entfernen Sie die alte Installation erst danach. Netzwerk-, GitHub- oder curl-Fehler
Der Installer lädt von GitHub. DNS-Probleme, Proxyserver, Unternehmensfirewalls oder eingeschränkte Netzwerke können den Download verhindern. Verwenden Sie keine zufälligen Drittanbieter-Skripte und deaktivieren Sie nicht vorschnell Sicherheitsfunktionen.
Für spezielle Netzwerkinfrastrukturen dokumentiert Homebrew Git-Remote-Mirrors über HOMEBREW_BREW_GIT_REMOTE und HOMEBREW_CORE_GIT_REMOTE. Das ist eine fortgeschrittene Vertrauensentscheidung und kein normaler Installationsschritt.

Berechtigungsprobleme
Verwenden Sie für normale Installationen nicht:
sudo brew install paketnameDas Administratorpasswort kann während der Ersteinrichtung erforderlich sein. Die vorgesehenen Standardpräfixe sind jedoch so ausgelegt, dass normale Homebrew-Befehle anschließend ohne sudo funktionieren. Nachträgliche Root-Befehle können Besitz- und Rechteprobleme verursachen.
Warnungen von brew doctor
Beheben Sie die konkrete Ursache und erstellen Sie keine manuellen Symlinks für versionierte Bibliotheken. Solche Verknüpfungen können unvollständige Aktualisierungen verdecken und dazu führen, dass inkompatible Bibliotheken geladen werden. Die vollständige Fehlermeldung und die Hinweise in den Common Issues sind maßgeblich.

Ein einfacher Wartungsablauf lautet:
brew update
brew outdated
brew upgrade
brew cleanupFühren Sie brew cleanup nur aus, wenn Sie alte Versionen und Caches nicht mehr benötigen.
Homebrew entfernen
Für die offizielle Deinstallation verwenden Sie den Uninstaller:
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/uninstall.sh)"Der Uninstaller stammt aus dem offiziellen Homebrew-Installer-Repository. Für eine bestimmte Installation kann der Pfad angegeben werden:
curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/uninstall.sh
/bin/bash uninstall.sh --path /usr/localErsetzen Sie /usr/local nur durch das tatsächlich zu entfernende Präfix. Bei einer Migration sollten Sie vorher den Paketbestand sichern.
Wichtige Sonderfälle
Benötige ich Rosetta?
Nein, nicht für eine native Apple-Silicon-Homebrew-Installation. Rosetta wird nur benötigt, wenn Sie Intel-Software auf Apple Silicon ausführen müssen. Eine unter Rosetta gestartete Shell kann jedoch eine separate Intel-Homebrew-Installation verwenden.

Kann Homebrew auf einem externen Laufwerk installiert werden?
Technisch sind abweichende Installationspfade möglich, Homebrew empfiehlt jedoch den Standardpfad. Ein eigener Pfad kann die Verfügbarkeit von Bottles beeinträchtigen und Kompilierungen aus dem Quellcode erzwingen. Für eine normale Installation ist der Standardpfad die robustere Wahl.
Was passiert mit der Homebrew-API?
Aktuelle Standardinstallationen verwenden Formulae und Casks nicht zwingend über lokale vollständige Checkouts, sondern können die Homebrew-API nutzen. HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1 ist eine fortgeschrittene Einstellung und sollte nicht ohne konkreten Grund global aktiviert werden.
