The printer worked yesterday, the NAS was reachable last week, and a port-forwarding rule suddenly points nowhere. Often, the device has not vanished: its local IP address changed.

For most home networks, a DHCP reservation is the best compromise. It gives a device a predictable local IP address while leaving the device configured for automatic networking. That is usually safer and easier to manage than entering a static IP manually on every device.

The short answer

Use a DHCP reservation for devices that need to be found reliably on your home network—such as printers, NAS devices, home servers, cameras, and smart-home hubs. Leave ordinary DHCP enabled on phones, laptops, tablets, televisions, and other devices that only initiate connections.

A reservation is configured on the router or other DHCP server. The device still asks for an address automatically, but the server normally assigns the same local address whenever it recognizes that client.

Router makers may call this feature DHCP reservation, address reservation, reserved IP, static DHCP, static lease, or fixed IP assignment. These names generally describe the same basic arrangement.

TP-Link describes reservation as its recommended approach for fixed addresses on supported Deco systems. The important qualification is “normally”: the result depends on the device presenting the expected client identity and using the DHCP server where the reservation was created.

What DHCP does

DHCP—Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol—automatically supplies a device with the settings it needs to communicate. Typically, those settings include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • a local IP address;
  • a subnet mask;
  • the router or default gateway; and
  • one or more DNS servers.

The router leases an address from an available pool. When the lease is renewed, the device may receive the same address again, but ordinary DHCP does not promise that it will always do so.

That is fine for a phone or laptop. Those devices usually connect outward and do not need other clients to locate them by a permanent address. It becomes inconvenient when a printer, NAS, camera, or local server changes address and dependent software still tries to use the old one.

What a DHCP reservation changes

Device requests an address
        ↓
Router recognizes the client
        ↓
Router assigns the reserved local IP
        ↓
Device remains configured for DHCP

The router associates a chosen IP address with a client identifier, usually a MAC address. The device continues receiving its gateway, subnet mask, DNS settings, and lease through DHCP. This provides much of the practical benefit of a static IP without requiring you to enter every network setting manually.

DHCP reservation versus static IP

Method Configured where Predictability Main risk Typical use
Ordinary DHCP Router or DHCP server Usually adequate, but the address can change Low Phones, laptops, tablets, TVs
DHCP reservation Router or DHCP server High when the same client identity is seen Low to moderate Printers, NAS devices, hubs, servers
Device-side static IP The device itself High when correctly configured Incorrect gateway, DNS, subnet, or duplicate-address settings Specialized equipment or networks without reservations
Public static IP ISP or WAN service Stable internet-facing address Security and provider-specific concerns Some business, VPN, or server deployments

A DHCP reservation is not technically the same as a static IP configured on the device. It is usually the better home-network choice because the client remains centrally managed by DHCP. Use a device-side static address only when the network cannot provide reservations, the equipment specifically requires it, or you understand the complete address-allocation plan.

Do not confuse either option with a public static IP from an internet provider. A reserved address such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x is a private LAN address. It is not automatically reachable from the internet. Google’s documentation distinguishes the local reserved address from the public address used outside the home.

Which devices deserve reservations?

Reserve an address when another device, application, or rule needs to find the client consistently. Common examples include:

  • Network printers: computers and mobile printing services are less likely to lose track of the printer.
  • NAS devices and home servers: mapped shares, media servers, administration pages, and local applications have a stable target.
  • Port-forwarding targets: the forwarding rule continues pointing to the intended internal device.
  • Home-automation hubs: controllers and integrations can use a consistent local address.
  • Cameras and NVRs: local viewing and recording software can locate the cameras reliably.
  • Local DNS records and firewall rules: names and policies based on an IP address are less fragile.
  • Devices you administer remotely on the LAN: the management page remains at a known address.

For a phone, tablet, ordinary laptop, streaming device, or television, a reservation is usually unnecessary. It does not make Wi-Fi faster, improve internet performance, or extend range. Reserving every client adds administrative clutter without a meaningful benefit.

  1. Connect to the network containing the target device.
  2. Open the router’s management interface or mobile app.
  3. Find DHCP, LAN, Local Network, Network Settings, Address Reservation, or Reserved IP.
  4. Select the device from the connected-client list if it appears.
  5. Confirm the displayed client identifier or MAC address. Do not rely only on a similar device name.
  6. Choose a valid local IP address.
  7. Give the entry a useful name, such as Office printer or NAS.
  8. Save or apply the change.
  9. Reconnect, reboot, or renew the target device’s DHCP lease.
  10. Check both the router and the device to confirm that the intended address is in use.

NETGEAR example

On applicable NETGEAR routers, the documented path is ADVANCED → Setup → LAN Setup → Address Reservation → Add. Enter the IP address and MAC address, then select Apply. NETGEAR notes that the device may not receive the address until it contacts DHCP again; rebooting or forcing a release and renewal can apply it sooner.

TP-Link example

On the cited TP-Link router interface, the path is DHCP → Address Reservation → Add New. Enter the client MAC address and IP address, leave the entry enabled, and save it. TP-Link warns that features and menus vary by hardware version and firmware.

Google/Nest example

Google Home’s documented route is Google Home app → Favourites → Wi-Fi → Network settings → Advanced Networking. Treat this as a product-specific example rather than a universal path, since app layouts and supported products can change. The current support instructions are available from Google.

Choose the address safely

  1. Identify the router’s LAN subnet, such as 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.50.0/24.
  2. Use an address valid for that subnet.
  3. Follow the router’s own rule about whether reservations must be inside the DHCP pool.
  4. Never use the network address, broadcast address, router’s LAN address, an address already used by a manually configured device, or an address reserved for another client.
  5. Record the device, MAC or client identity, reserved address, and network segment in a small inventory.

There is no universal rule that reservations must always be inside or always outside the DHCP pool. Some routers permit both approaches; others impose a specific requirement. For example, a D-Link manual requires the reserved address to be within its DHCP range. Use the range permitted by your model, and ensure that no other DHCP server or manually configured device can assign the same address.

Make the device use the new lease

Saving the reservation changes the router’s configuration, but it may not immediately replace a lease the client already holds. Reconnect the device to Wi-Fi, restart its network interface, reboot it, or wait for lease renewal.

Verify that it worked

Check all of the following:

  • The router’s client list shows the expected address next to the expected device identity.
  • The device’s own network information shows the same address.
  • The device can reach the router and the internet.
  • Another client can reach the device at that address.
  • Dependent services—such as a printer connection, NAS share, local web interface, or port-forward target—still work after disconnecting and reconnecting.
  • The address remains consistent after the device reboots.

A router showing that a reservation exists is not proof that the client is currently using it. The client must renew its lease, and the router must be the DHCP server that actually served the lease.

When a reservation does not work

  1. Check the network first. Is the device connected to the main LAN, a guest network, an IoT network, or a different VLAN?
  2. Find the DHCP server. Identify which device is the gateway and which device is assigning addresses. A reservation on an access point or secondary router may have no effect if an upstream gateway provides DHCP.
  3. Check the client identity. Compare the MAC or private Wi-Fi address currently shown in the router’s client list with the identity saved in the reservation.
  4. Look for another DHCP server. A second router, incorrectly configured mesh node, ISP gateway, or virtual networking service can issue a different lease, gateway, or DNS configuration.
  5. Check for a manually configured address. A device-side static IP can override the router’s reservation and may collide with another client.
  6. Check the address and scope. Confirm that the chosen address is valid for that subnet and permitted by the router’s DHCP implementation.
  7. Renew or reboot. The existing lease may still be active.
  8. Check for stale entries. A replaced printer, camera, or NAS has a different MAC address; edit or remove the old reservation.

Modern complications: private MAC addresses and mesh modes

Private or randomized Wi-Fi addresses

Modern operating systems may use a private or randomized MAC address, especially on Wi-Fi. If the router’s reservation is tied to one identity but the device presents another, the expected address may not be assigned. This does not always break reservations: behavior depends on the operating system, network profile, and whether the private address remains stable for that SSID.

Check the identity shown by the router after reconnecting. Where the operating system permits it, reserve the address for the stable private identity used on that trusted home network. Disable randomization only when appropriate for that network, and consider Ethernet for fixed infrastructure where practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mesh and access-point mode

Configure the reservation on the network’s actual DHCP server. If a mesh system operates in bridge or access-point mode, the upstream router usually owns DHCP and reservations. If the mesh operates in router mode, its own app or interface may control them.

Before troubleshooting, identify the gateway, DHCP server, client subnet, and whether the device is on the main LAN, guest network, IoT network, or another segment.

Guest networks and VLANs

Each isolated network can have a separate DHCP scope. A reservation created on the main LAN may not apply to a guest or IoT network. Even if the same numerical IP could exist on two isolated networks, it is not necessarily reachable between them.

IPv4 is not IPv6

Most home-router reservation screens concern IPv4. IPv6 may use SLAAC, DHCPv6, privacy addresses, or a combination of methods. An IPv4 reservation does not automatically create a stable IPv6 address or solve IPv6 reachability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an application is using IPv6, investigate the device’s IPv6 address and the router’s IPv6 configuration separately. Do not assume that making an IPv4 address predictable makes every address the device uses predictable.

What a reservation cannot do

A DHCP reservation only makes a local address predictable. It does not:

  • increase internet speed or Wi-Fi performance;
  • open a firewall port;
  • create a port-forwarding rule;
  • provide a public static IP;
  • work around carrier-grade NAT;
  • make remote access secure; or
  • guarantee reachability when the DHCP server, network segment, or client identity changes.

For port forwarding, the reservation supplies a stable internal target; you still need a separate forwarding rule and appropriate firewall configuration. Exposing services directly to the internet carries security risk. Prefer a VPN or the vendor’s supported secure remote-access method where appropriate.

Should you replace a router that lacks reservations?

Only if the feature is important to your setup. Before buying, check the exact model’s documentation—not just the product family—for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DHCP reservations or static leases;
  • router, bridge, and access-point modes;
  • guest, IoT, or VLAN support if needed;
  • IPv6 configuration;
  • configuration backup and restore;
  • clear client identification when private Wi-Fi addresses are used; and
  • local web administration if app-only control would be limiting.

Consumer mesh systems such as TP-Link Deco and Google/Nest generally emphasize app-managed simplicity, while NETGEAR and many ASUS models offer more traditional router interfaces on applicable models. Ubiquiti UniFi is aimed at users who want deeper control over multiple networks and access points. Features, modes, subscriptions, availability, and pricing vary by exact model and region, so do not treat a product family’s feature list as a guarantee.

Final recommendation

Keep ordinary clients on DHCP. Reserve addresses only for devices that need predictable local reachability, and create those reservations on the network’s authoritative DHCP server. That approach avoids most manual-configuration errors while giving printers, NAS devices, servers, cameras, and automation hubs a dependable local address.
