Choose Hermes Agent if you want a persistent agent that learns procedures and user context, then runs work across different execution backends. Choose OpenClaw if you want a long-running Gateway to coordinate chat channels, devices, sessions, tools, and multiple agents from one host. Both are self-hostable, MIT-licensed projects; the distinction is their center of gravity, not a simple claim that one is universally better. Which fits depends on whether your main problem is building up an adaptable personal agent or operating a multi-channel control plane.

What “agent-first” and “gateway-first” mean

Hermes Agent is organized around the agent loop: it can use experience to curate memory, create or refine skills after complex tasks, search past sessions, model user preferences, schedule automations, and delegate subwork. Its execution can be sent to different terminal backends. In practical terms, the agent’s accumulated context and capabilities are the organizing idea.

OpenClaw is organized around a long-running Gateway. The Gateway owns sessions, tools, events, and channel connections; clients such as its control UI, CLI, TUI, and native apps connect to it. A single Gateway can host multiple agents with different tool profiles and sandbox settings. The central idea is coordinated access and policy, rather than one agent’s learning loop.

These descriptions come from the Hermes project README and a dated comparison by VDF AI. They are useful architectural distinctions, but they do not guarantee a particular model’s reasoning quality, a deployment’s safety, or identical behavior across versions.

How their capabilities compare

Area Hermes Agent OpenClaw
Primary focus Agent workflow, learning, memory, and skills Gateway control plane for sessions, tools, events, channels, and devices
Execution Local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, and Modal backends are documented Gateway-hosted policy, optional tool sandboxing, and paired device nodes
Channels and interfaces Interactive terminal UI and a messaging gateway; documented channels include Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, and email. Home Assistant integration is also documented. More than twenty messaging services and native companion apps are reported in the dated comparison.
Memory and learning Bounded MEMORY.md and USER.md, session search, user modeling, and autonomous skill creation/refinement Workspace memory files, search, plugins, and optional extensions
Skills Autonomous creation and refinement; agentskills.io compatibility ClawHub, Git, or local skill folders, plus Skill Workshop; agentskills.io compatibility
Multiple agents Delegation and parallel subagents within an agent workflow Several agents on one Gateway, with per-agent tool profiles and sandbox settings
Optional hosted services Nous Portal and Hermes Cloud are identified as options The comparison says the OpenClaw Foundation offers no paid hosted tier

The channel comparison is about documented breadth, not a guarantee that every integration is available in every release or region. Hermes lists familiar messaging systems and email; OpenClaw’s reported reach of more than twenty services and native companion apps makes it the stronger fit when channel and device coverage is the top requirement. Verify the current integration and setup instructions in the project version you intend to deploy.

Where Hermes has the edge

A personal agent that develops repeatable procedures

Hermes is the more natural choice when you want an agent to carry useful context from one task to another. Its documented learning loop includes agent-curated memory, user modeling, full-text session search, periodic nudges, and skill creation after complex tasks. This is more than storing a prompt: memory and skills are intended to make later work informed by prior interactions and procedures.

That approach is useful for recurring workflows, but it also makes review important. Persistent memory and generated skills can affect future runs. Decide what the agent is allowed to retain, inspect procedures it creates, and keep sensitive information out of memory unless your handling policies permit it.

Execution can move beyond one machine

Hermes documents six backends: local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, and Modal. That range gives operators options to run work locally, in a container, on a remote host, or in named hosted/serverless environments. Backend availability does not by itself establish the security boundary: the comparison specifically describes container backends as treating the container as the boundary, so configure and assess each backend rather than assuming all execution is isolated the same way.

Provider flexibility

The Hermes README names Nous Portal, OpenRouter, z.ai/GLM, Kimi/Moonshot, MiniMax, OpenAI, and user-supplied endpoints. This is useful if you want to choose or change providers, but a provider being supported does not mean every model is equally suitable. Check tool-calling support, context limits, latency, data terms, and API charges for the exact model and endpoint you select.

Where OpenClaw has the edge

A shared control point for channels and agents

OpenClaw’s Gateway is designed as a long-running service that coordinates channel connections, sessions, tools, and events. Its clients connect to that service, and paired devices may expose capabilities such as command execution. If you need one operational point for several messaging services, companion apps, devices, and agent profiles, that architecture is a direct fit.

The trade-off is operational concentration: the Gateway is a central control point, so access, network exposure, pairing, and tool policy matter. A system with many channels is not automatically easier or safer to operate; more integrations can mean more credentials and routes to govern.

Multiple agents with per-agent policy

The comparison describes multiple OpenClaw agents on one Gateway, with separate tool profiles and sandbox settings. That can make it easier to centralize coordination while giving distinct agents different capabilities. It does not remove the need to define each profile carefully: an agent with command execution or access to private integrations has a different risk profile from one restricted to low-impact tasks.

Skills and workspace memory

OpenClaw skills are described as SKILL.md folders sourced from ClawHub, Git, or local folders. The comparison also cites workspace memory files, search, plugins, and a Skill Workshop that can propose or automatically apply learning changes. This gives OpenClaw learning and extension mechanisms too; the distinction is not “Hermes learns, OpenClaw cannot.” Hermes foregrounds autonomous agent learning, while OpenClaw places skills and learning features inside its broader Gateway ecosystem.

Security: compare defaults, then secure your deployment

The VDF AI comparison reports different defaults. OpenClaw binds its Gateway to loopback and pairs unknown senders; it also supports group allowlists. However, the comparison says trusted-operator host commands can run without approval prompts and sandboxing is off until configured. Hermes denies messaging users until they are allowlisted or paired and asks approval for dangerous commands on the default local backend. The comparison describes container backends as treating the container as the boundary.

These are reported project defaults, not a substitute for checking the release and configuration you run. In either project, review who can message the agent, what commands or tools it can use, where credentials are stored, and whether the execution environment can reach sensitive files or services.

  • Keep either system off the public internet unless you have deliberately designed and secured the exposure.
  • Restrict access to trusted users; configure allowlists, pairing, and group access rather than assuming a connected chat account is safe.
  • Isolate command execution and choose tool permissions deliberately. A sandbox that exists but is not enabled is not a protection.
  • Update regularly and review release notes and security advisories before upgrades.

Security counts are especially time-sensitive. The comparison states that, as of 27 September 2026, OpenClaw’s repository listed 722 published security advisories; it also reports 10 reviewed GitHub Advisory Database entries for the Hermes Python package, including one high-severity issue fixed in version 0.16.0. Those counts are not a severity-weighted comparison, do not establish that every advisory affects a current installation, and may have changed since that date. Check the relevant repository and package advisories for the version you plan to deploy before making a risk decision.

Cost, licensing, and ongoing work

The dated comparison describes both projects as MIT-licensed and free to self-host. It identifies Nous Portal plans and Hermes Cloud as optional Hermes services, and says the OpenClaw Foundation offers no paid hosted service. That is a statement about the Foundation, not a claim that no independent operator offers OpenClaw hosting or support.

“Free to self-host” refers to the software license, not the total cost of operating an agent. Model/API usage, hardware or compute, hosting, storage, messaging integrations, and operator time can all add cost. For Hermes, a remote or serverless execution backend may change the compute bill; for OpenClaw, a continuously running Gateway and its connected services have operational requirements. The available comparison does not establish a like-for-like monthly cost, so estimate with your own model, workload, and hosting choices rather than treating either as cheaper by default.

Which one should you choose?

Your priority Better starting point Why
Agent that remembers context and develops reusable skills Hermes Agent Its core loop foregrounds memory, session search, user modeling, and skill creation/refinement.
Work that should run across local, container, remote, or named hosted backends Hermes Agent It documents multiple terminal backends, including local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, and Modal.
One Gateway coordinating many messaging channels and devices OpenClaw Its architecture centers on channel connections, sessions, events, tools, clients, and paired devices.
Several agents with distinct tool profiles on one control point OpenClaw The comparison describes multiple agents on one Gateway with per-agent profiles and sandbox settings.
Freedom to pick among named model providers or custom endpoints Hermes is a documented option Its README names several providers and user-supplied endpoints; validate model-specific capabilities before choosing.

If your requirements are split, make a small deployment plan before choosing: list the channels, execution locations, memory behavior, tools, user groups, and model providers you actually need. Then test one representative workflow and its failure modes. The architectural labels help narrow the choice, but they do not replace confirming that your required integration and model work in your target version.

Moving from OpenClaw to Hermes

Hermes documents a migration command for importing selected OpenClaw data. The project’s listed import set includes persona data from SOUL.md, memories, user-created skills, command allowlists, messaging settings, selected API keys, TTS assets, and workspace instructions. Treat migration as a reviewed transfer, not a promise that every Gateway state or integration maps one-for-one.

  1. Review what is present. Identify the OpenClaw persona, memory, skill, allowlist, messaging, key, TTS, and workspace files you intend to transfer. Separate secrets from content that can be reviewed safely.
  2. Preview the import. Run hermes claw migrate --dry-run to use the documented dry-run mode. Review the proposed changes and any conflicts before an actual migration.
  3. Run the migration. Use hermes claw migrate when the preview is acceptable. The command is documented by Hermes; available flags and prompts may vary by release, so follow the help output for the installed version.
  4. Check the resulting setup. Inspect imported memories and skills, verify command permissions and messaging settings, and confirm required credentials without exposing them in logs or chat.
  5. Test safely before relying on it. Try a low-risk workflow first, then confirm the intended backend, model, channel, and approval behavior before enabling consequential actions.

Because the migration can encounter conflicts, do not let an import silently overwrite data you need. Keep a recoverable copy of the source state and review conflicts before accepting changes.

Common decision and setup pitfalls

Choosing by channel count alone

A long integration list matters only if it includes the services you use and works in the version you deploy. Confirm exact channel support and any companion-device requirements; the available comparison reports breadth but does not enumerate every service or its setup constraints.

Assuming “supports a model” means equivalent results

Provider selection does not guarantee that a model supports the tool calls, context size, or latency your workflow needs. Test the specific model and endpoint with the tools and prompts you expect to use, and account for its API cost and data terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating pairing or a sandbox as complete security

Pairing and allowlists help control who can reach an agent, but they do not define what an authorized user can make it do. Likewise, a sandbox has value only when enabled and configured for the real host and workload. Audit user access and tool permissions together.

Expecting migration to reproduce the whole system

The documented import set covers selected persona, memory, skills, settings, and assets; it does not establish a full conversion of all Gateway behavior, external service state, or deployment policy. Preview the import, resolve conflicts, and validate each required workflow afterward.

A separate developer task: website screenshots

Hermes and OpenClaw are agent platforms, not screenshot APIs. If your work also needs website screenshots or PDFs, ScreenshotNeo is a separate tool to try first for that task: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and it can remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Its billing rules distinguish clean shots from bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits.
