If several unrelated Android apps suddenly close, especially when opening a sign-in page, payment screen, article, or other online content, update Android System WebView and Google Chrome, restart the phone, and test again. This is the safest high-probability fix for a shared WebView problem.
Do not begin by clearing app data, downloading a WebView APK from an unofficial site, or uninstalling WebView updates. Those steps can remove local data or create new compatibility and security problems.
What Android System WebView does
Android System WebView is the embedded browser component that lets apps display web pages without sending you to a separate browser. Apps use it for login screens, checkout pages, help articles, embedded videos, account portals, and other web-based features.

That is why the visible crash may appear to belong to Gmail, a banking app, a shopping app, or an enterprise app even when the shared WebView component is involved.

Depending on the Android version and device, Chrome may provide the WebView implementation, or Android System WebView may appear as a separate updateable component. Chrome and WebView use related technology, but they are not interchangeable on every phone.
The two-minute fix
- Restart the phone. Hold the power button and choose Restart. Menu wording varies by manufacturer.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Manage apps & device.
- Under available updates, install updates for Android System WebView and Google Chrome.
- Restart the phone again and test two or three apps that were crashing.
Google’s current Play Store path is Profile picture → Manage apps & device → Updates available, although labels can differ slightly by Android edition or region. If either component does not appear in the list, search for it directly in Play Store and check whether an Update button is available.
This sequence is not a guaranteed cure for every Android crash. It is the right first move when multiple apps started failing together or the error explicitly mentions WebView, Chrome, or a WebView renderer.

If WebView crashes continue
1. Install Android and Google Play system updates
Open Settings → System → Software update, or use the equivalent menu supplied by your phone maker. Also check for a Google Play system update if your device provides that option. Restart after installing updates.
System labels differ on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other devices. If you cannot find the menu, use Settings search for software update, system update, or Google Play system update.
2. Check available storage
Open Settings → Storage and remove or archive unnecessary downloads, videos, apps, and other files. Google says Android devices may begin having problems when less than 10% of storage remains free. That is general troubleshooting guidance, not proof that low storage caused your WebView crash, but it is worth correcting before repeated app resets or reinstallations.
3. Force-stop the affected app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select the app that is crashing.
- Tap Force stop, confirm, and reopen the app.
Force-stopping terminates the current app process and is less destructive than clearing storage.

4. Clear the affected app’s cache
Use Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Cache files are temporary in normal use, so this is generally a low-risk step. The next launch may take slightly longer while the app rebuilds them.
If only one app is failing, start with that app rather than clearing data from every Google component on the phone.
5. Clear WebView and Chrome cache
If the error specifically names WebView or Chrome, open Settings → Apps → Android System WebView → Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. Repeat for Chrome if Chrome is implicated. Restart the phone and test again.
Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data, at this stage. Clearing Chrome’s storage can remove local browser state, while clearing WebView storage may affect state used by apps that depend on it.

Clearing storage or data is more disruptive than clearing the cache. It can sign you out, erase local settings, remove downloads or drafts, and delete information that has not synced to an account.
Use it only after restarting, updating, force-stopping, and clearing the cache. First confirm that important information is synced or backed up, and check the app developer’s support instructions if the app contains valuable local data.
7. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the crashes stop there, a recently installed or updated third-party app is more likely to be interfering. This does not identify the culprit by itself.

Safe Mode entry differs between Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other phones, so use your manufacturer’s instructions or search Settings/help for Safe mode. After testing:
- Restart normally to leave Safe Mode.
- Remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time.
- Restart and retest after each removal.

When Play Store updates are stuck
If WebView or Chrome shows an update but it will not install:
- Confirm you have a stable internet connection.
- Free storage if space is low.
- Check whether another Play Store download is paused or pending.
- Restart the phone.
- Clear the Google Play Store cache and try again.
Google lists clearing Play Store cache as a common download fix. Clearing Play Store data is more disruptive because it can reset settings such as parental controls and password protection. Use the Play Store’s Uninstall updates option only for the Play Store itself when Google’s troubleshooting path calls for it; that is different from rolling back WebView.
Do not casually clear Google Play services data. Google warns that doing so can remove or require reauthentication for information such as passwords, transit cards, and Google Pay payment cards.

Only consider rolling back WebView or Chrome updates as a last-resort recovery step. It may be reasonable when several apps began failing immediately after a strongly suspected update, the Play Store cannot install a corrected release, and the phone remains usable enough to change the component.
On some phones, open the component’s App info screen, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall updates. On others, the option may be exposed on the component’s Play Store page. The wording and availability vary.

This returns a system component toward its factory version; it does not permanently remove WebView. However, it can create a security and compatibility gap until updates are restored. Google has warned that manually uninstalling WebView updates may cause data loss in some apps. Treat rollback as an emergency workaround, not routine maintenance, and update the component again as soon as a stable fix is available.
Diagnose the symptom before blaming WebView
A crash message naming WebView does not prove that WebView is the root cause. Use the pattern of the failure as a guide:

These are probabilities, not definitive diagnoses. Chrome itself can crash independently, an app can misuse WebView APIs, and a website can trigger a renderer or JavaScript failure. VPNs, ad blockers, accessibility services, overlays, password managers, and security products can also interfere.
What not to do
- Do not download random WebView APKs. Third-party packages may be malicious, incompatible, or intended for a different device. Use Play Store, the device maker’s updater, or the manufacturer’s support channel.
- Do not clear data from every Google component. Start with the affected app’s cache and avoid resetting Google Play services casually.
- Do not permanently disable WebView. Dependent apps may fail in other ways when the supported provider is missing or disabled.
- Do not factory-reset immediately. A reset erases device data and installed apps. Back up first and use it only after less destructive options and professional support.
- Do not assume the named component is guilty. A single-app failure often points to the app itself rather than a system-wide WebView problem.
Manufacturer, Android version, and Google-free device differences
Settings names, WebView visibility, Safe Mode gestures, and rollback controls vary by manufacturer and Android version. Use Settings search for WebView, Chrome, Apps, or Safe mode when a published path does not match your phone.
Amazon Fire tablets, some Huawei devices, enterprise-managed phones, custom ROMs, and other Google-free configurations may not have Google’s Android System WebView or Play Store. Do not sideload Google packages as a generic fix. Use the device maker’s system updater and support channel instead.
If updates are unavailable, the component may already be current, the device may be outside the supported Android range, Play Store services may be malfunctioning, storage or network conditions may block installation, or the issue may not be WebView-related.
For developers: handle WebView renderer termination
If you maintain an Android app that embeds WebView, a renderer failure can make the host app appear to crash or become unusable. Android may kill the renderer to reclaim memory, or the renderer may crash internally. The app should handle that event rather than assuming the WebView remains valid.

Implement WebViewClient.onRenderProcessGone(), determine whether the renderer crashed or was killed, remove the affected WebView from its parent, destroy it, clear references to it, show a recoverable error state, and create a fresh WebView. Android’s documentation says a WebView whose renderer has gone away cannot safely be reused.

}The exact lifecycle and state-restoration code depends on whether the WebView belongs to an Activity, Fragment, Compose wrapper, navigation flow, or custom container.
Reproduce first with the stable WebView channel before testing Beta, Dev, or Canary. On Android 16 or later with Developer Mode enabled, WebView DevTools can be opened through Settings → System → Developer options → WebView DevTools. It can expose version information, crash reports, flags, network logs, and provider-switching tools. Provider switching is primarily for diagnosis and compatibility testing, not a general consumer fix.

When filing a bug, record the device model, Android version, WebView package and version, Chrome version, affected URL, reproduction steps, and crash logs. Android notes that loading the same problematic page again in a new WebView may reproduce a rendering crash.
When to escalate
If only one app remains broken after the steps above, contact that app’s developer. If the phone itself repeatedly reboots, freezes, or crashes outside the affected apps, contact the manufacturer or carrier. For a suspected system-wide WebView regression, use the corrected first-party update when available rather than relying on unofficial downloads.
The safest overall order is: restart, update WebView and Chrome, update Android, check storage, force-stop, clear cache, test Safe Mode, and only then consider clearing data or rolling back updates.
