Here (2024) is listed on Netflix U.S. as a PG-13 drama running 1 hour and 44 minutes. It is an easy film to sample if you already subscribe, but it is not a safe recommendation for everyone: its fixed-camera structure, time-jumping story, digital de-aging and overt sentimentality are exactly what some viewers admire and others dislike.

What is Here about?
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Here follows multiple families connected to one physical location across enormous stretches of time. The film moves from prehistoric life and early human history to a modern American home, showing how the same piece of land changes while generations come and go.
The main emotional thread centers on Richard and Margaret Young, played by Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. Their story is set within a much broader portrait of family, aging, memory, loss and home. The film is adapted from Richard McGuire’s graphic novel Here, whose central idea is observing one place across different moments in time. Sony’s official synopsis and credits confirm the adaptation, the cast and the reunion of Zemeckis, screenwriter Eric Roth, Hanks and Wright.

Why is the movie so unusual?
Much of Here is presented from a single, largely fixed viewpoint. The camera remains focused on the same area while characters, furniture, costumes, historical periods and entire families change within the frame.
That does not mean the movie is literally one uninterrupted shot. The more accurate description is a predominantly fixed-angle presentation that makes the location—not a conventional moving camera—the film’s organizing principle. The Associated Press described the fixed viewpoint as central to essentially the entire 105-minute production.
This approach is deliberate, not a production shortcut. It echoes McGuire’s graphic novel and asks viewers to watch time accumulate in one confined visual space. Instead of moving from room to room or cutting between many locations, the film creates drama through changes inside the frame and transitions between eras.

Why did Here divide viewers?
Calling the film “polarizing” is most accurate as a description of its artistic reception. The available reception evidence points to a mixed-to-negative response among professional critics, but not universal dismissal. The argument is largely about whether the film’s unusual concept produces compelling drama.
What some viewers appreciate
- A genuinely unusual concept: Few mainstream studio dramas attempt to observe one location across such a vast span of history.
- Attention to detail: The restricted viewpoint encourages viewers to notice production design, décor, costumes, historical transitions and small movements within the frame.
- Generational themes: Family, mortality, memory, inheritance and the meaning of home can resonate with viewers who enjoy reflective dramas.
- Emotional familiarity: Hanks and Wright bring nostalgia to the film, especially for audiences familiar with their earlier work together.
- Ambition: Even viewers who find the execution uneven may find the attempt more interesting than a conventional family drama.
Netflix’s own descriptors—“sentimental,” “tearjerker,” “experimental,” “nostalgic,” “family relationship” and “period piece”—give a useful indication of the film’s intended territory.
What critics and detractors dislike
- The static presentation: The locked-off viewpoint can feel monotonous, theatrical or visually restrictive rather than cinematic.
- Fragmented storytelling: The movement between eras and families can make the film feel episodic and dilute attention from individual characters.
- Broad sentimentality: Its direct emotional cues may feel heartfelt to some viewers and obvious or manipulative to others.
- Digital de-aging: The technology allows Hanks and Wright to appear at different ages, but the results can look artificial or uncanny.
- Form over drama: Some reviewers felt the camera concept becomes the main event instead of strengthening the human stories.
The AP review highlights the tension between the film’s ambition, its many historical vignettes, its unmoving camera and its de-aging effects. Metacritic’s review summaries similarly capture the central objection: the movie attempts a sweeping portrait of American life, but its formal idea can leave the drama feeling weightless.

The Forrest Gump reunion is not the whole story
Here reunites director Robert Zemeckis, writer Eric Roth, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, the core creative and leading-performer combination associated with Forrest Gump. That connection is a legitimate reason for fans to be curious, but it should not set the wrong expectation.
Here is not a sequel and does not use the same conventional, forward-moving structure as Forrest Gump. Its fixed viewpoint and multi-family chronology make it a much more constrained and experimental film. The reunion offers familiarity; it does not guarantee a similar viewing experience.
Is Here worth watching on Netflix?
Try it if you enjoy the premise more than you need a conventional plot. Netflix access makes the decision relatively low-risk for existing subscribers, but the film is best approached as an experiment in time and place rather than a standard historical or family drama.

Skip it if you prefer
- Fast pacing and frequent changes of location or perspective.
- A single protagonist and a linear plot.
- Naturalistic visual effects and unobtrusive filmmaking.
- Subtle emotional storytelling rather than overt sentiment.
- Action, suspense or conventional scene-to-scene coverage.
The film is rated PG-13 on Netflix and has a listed runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes. That relatively manageable length makes it a reasonable one-sitting sample for curious viewers, but it does not remove the central stylistic gamble.

Netflix is not “free”; the film is included with an eligible subscription. If you do not already use Netflix, a one-time rental may make more sense than subscribing solely to watch a 104-minute movie.
The verdict
Here is worth sampling on Netflix if its premise appeals to you. Its strongest qualities and biggest weaknesses come from the same decisions: the fixed viewpoint creates a distinctive way to experience time, but it can also feel static; the many generations provide scope, but they can weaken emotional focus; and the sentiment gives the film accessibility while making it feel overly broad to some viewers.
In short, this is an ambitious, emotionally direct experiment—not an overlooked masterpiece by default and not a film every Netflix subscriber should avoid. Fans of unconventional storytelling should give it a chance. Viewers who need momentum, realism and a straightforward plot should probably choose something else.
