Hedra released Character-1 on August 1, 2024, describing it as a video-focused foundation model for expressive, audio-driven character animation. The product launch came alongside a $10 million seed-round announcement. Character-1 is now a historical release: Hedra’s current model lineup emphasizes later products such as Character-3 and Omnia.
What Hedra announced in August 2024
Hedra’s announcement combined two milestones: it came out of stealth with Character-1 and disclosed a $10 million seed round. VentureBeat reported that the round included Index Ventures, Abstract, and Andreessen Horowitz’s Speedrun. The company’s founders had backgrounds at Nvidia, Google, and Meta, according to the same report.
Character-1 had been previewed to researchers in June 2024; August 1 was the reported public release. Hedra described the model as a way to make video creation faster and easier for creators and marketers, and called it “the fastest video foundation model on the market.” That superlative was Hedra’s marketing claim, not an independently verified benchmark.
What Character-1 was designed to do
The product addressed a specific creative problem: general-purpose video generation can make visually varied clips but may offer limited control over a speaking character’s identity and performance. Traditional avatar tools, by contrast, can synchronize a presenter with speech but often keep the result within a more constrained talking-head format.

Hedra positioned Character-1 as an audio-conditioned character-video model: the idea was to animate a character from a still image and have its facial performance respond expressively to audio. That emphasis made it most relevant to talking-character videos, animated portraits, social clips, explainers, and promotional content—not necessarily to open-ended cinematic scene generation.
“Foundation model” was Hedra’s description of the system’s role and ambitions. The launch reporting did not publish its architecture, parameter count, training data, evaluation benchmarks, model weights, or a license. The label therefore should not be mistaken for a technically documented specification or evidence of independently measured performance.
What the launch did—and did not—document
The public launch evidence establishes the date, the audio-driven character-video focus, the earlier research preview, and the funding announcement. It does not establish a Character-1 maximum clip duration, resolution, aspect ratios, API access, voice-cloning support, full-body performance, commercial-use terms, or a specific price. Specifications shown for newer Hedra models should not be retroactively assigned to Character-1.

Nor is there an independent Character-1 benchmark in the cited launch coverage. Claims about speed or quality should be read as company positioning. As with character-video systems generally, creators should assess whether a workflow meets their needs for speech alignment, consistent identity, natural expressions, and usable motion; those are category-level considerations, not reported Character-1 test results.
From Character-1 to Hedra’s current models

Omnia illustrates how Hedra’s product direction broadened beyond the original audio-driven character pitch. In its Omnia announcement, Hedra describes controls for character performance, camera movement, and environments. Its model page describes an image-and-audio workflow with text prompting for motion and scene direction, and lists Omnia Avatar options of 540p, 720p, or 1080p, in 1:1, 16:9, or 9:16 formats, for clips up to about eight seconds. These are Omnia details, not Character-1 specifications.
The comparison is about product lineage, not a head-to-head quality test: Character-1 introduced Hedra’s character-animation proposition; Omnia is a later model with broader scene and camera controls. Hedra’s public model catalog lists Character 3 and Avatar among its own models and presents Omnia separately. It does not list Character-1.

Can you still use Character-1?
Hedra’s current public catalog does not document Character-1 as a generally available model. The evidence supports treating it as a historical launch that has been superseded in Hedra’s product line, rather than a model to select today. The exact retirement date, any migration path, and whether prior Character-1 projects or outputs remain accessible are not established by the current public materials.

For present-day use, compare the current model and plan details directly on Hedra’s pricing page and model catalog. The pricing page lists Character-3 at 6 credits per second and Omnia’s model page lists 15 credits per second; those are current listed rates, not original Character-1 pricing. Hedra lists Basic at $15 per month for 1,500 credits, Creator at $30 for 5,400, Professional and Teams at $75 for 14,400, and custom Enterprise pricing. Subscription credits do not roll over, while purchased credit packs do not expire, according to the pricing page.
Hedra’s public pages are inconsistent about free access: one lists 100 credits per month, while another lists 300. Check the current terms before planning a workflow around a free allowance. For developers, Hedra’s API quickstart says a paid subscription account and API key are required; the API exposes multiple video models through a common interface. This is current platform information, not evidence that Character-1 had API access at launch.

Who should consider Hedra now?
Hedra’s current direction is most relevant to creators, marketers, agencies, educators, and developers who want character-led video or a unified workflow for video, image, and audio generation. If the need is a business presenter or training-video workflow, HeyGen (official site) and Synthesia (official site) are relevant alternatives to evaluate. For broader generative-video production, compare Runway (official site). These are different product categories and workflows, not claims of direct technical equivalence.
Character-1’s 2024 launch remains significant as an early statement of Hedra’s focus on expressive character performance. But anyone choosing a tool now should evaluate current models and terms rather than assume the original model, its price, or its capabilities remain available.
