If HBOMax.com will not load, sign in, or play a video, first open it in a private window and then try another supported browser. Those quick tests help show whether an extension, cookie, browser setting, or something beyond your computer is involved. HBO Max is the name used on the official U.S. support pages as of August 2026; the website is HBOMax.com.
First, work out where the problem is
“Not working” can mean a blank page, a sign-in loop, a video that will not start, or buffering. Test in this order before deleting browser data or changing network settings:
- Open another website. If that also fails, check your internet connection first.
- Reload HBOMax.com, then close and reopen the browser.
- Open the site in a private window: Incognito in Chrome, InPrivate in Edge, or a Private Window in Firefox or Safari.
- Try another supported browser: the latest Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, or Safari.
- If possible, try another device on the same network. A phone hotspot or other network can help distinguish a home-network issue from a device or browser issue; consider mobile-data limits.
- Write down the exact error text and code, if shown.
If the site works in a private window, cookies, cached site files, extensions, or browser settings are plausible causes. If another browser works, focus on the original browser. If it fails across browsers, devices, and networks, an account or provider issue, DNS or network filtering, regional access, or a temporary service problem becomes more plausible. These tests can narrow the cause, but they cannot confirm a service outage by themselves; check HBO Max’s official help center for current guidance.
Quick fixes for browser problems
Try these least-disruptive steps first. The official HBO Max troubleshooting guide also recommends checking browser support, private browsing, extensions, cookies, and site data.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Update your browser. Install any available update and relaunch it; some updates do not take effect until you restart the browser.
- Test without extensions. Ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers can interfere with site functions. Temporarily disable extensions, test HBO Max, then turn them back on one at a time to identify a conflict. Do not leave security tools disabled permanently.
- Allow third-party cookies. Cookie restrictions can interfere with sign-in or account connections. If your browser offers site-specific exceptions, use one for HBO Max rather than relaxing privacy settings more broadly than necessary.
- Clear only HBO Max site data. Search your browser’s site-data settings for
hbomax.comand, if present,max.com; remove that service’s cookies and cached files. Close and reopen the browser, then sign in again. This may sign you out and remove site preferences, but it does not cancel your subscription or delete your account. - Sign out and restart. If you can reach your account, sign out, restart the computer, reopen the browser, and sign in again.
- Try another supported browser. This is a useful diagnostic even if you later want to return to your usual browser.
Avoid clearing all browsing history and cookies as a first step: it can sign you out of many sites and is usually unnecessary when the problem appears limited to HBO Max.
Browser-specific checks
Google Chrome
- Open the three-dot menu and choose Update Google Chrome if that option appears; relaunch Chrome.
- Choose New Incognito Window and test HBOMax.com.
- If it works there, temporarily disable extensions and allow the service’s cookies. Clear HBO Max site data if needed.
- If the problem remains, test Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
On a work- or school-managed computer, an administrator may control extensions, cookies, or other browser settings. Contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass those policies.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the three-dot menu and go to Settings > About Microsoft Edge; install an update if offered and relaunch.
- Open an InPrivate window and test the site.
- If that works, check extensions and cookie settings. To clear site data using the official guide’s route, go to Menu > History > Clear browsing data, choose All time, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Clear now. This clears data more broadly than just HBO Max.
Firefox
- Open the menu, choose Settings, search for “update,” and check for browser updates.
- Open a Private Window and test HBO Max.
- If it works, check add-ons and cookie settings, then clear HBO Max site data if necessary.
Safari
- Install available macOS updates; Safari updates with macOS.
- Choose File > New Private Window and test HBOMax.com.
- If it works, temporarily disable Safari extensions and remove the service’s website data, then test again.
The website loads, but sign-in fails
Treat a login loop or rejected sign-in separately from a page that will not load:
- Check that you are using the email address associated with your HBO Max account.
- Try a private window or a second supported browser. If either works, cookies or browser settings are likely involved.
- Clear HBO Max site cookies and cached files, then close and reopen the browser.
- If the password may be wrong, use the password-reset option. Check spam or junk if the reset email does not arrive, and verify that you entered the account’s email correctly.
For more steps, see HBO Max’s sign-in troubleshooting. If your subscription is billed through an internet, mobile, or TV provider, you may need to authenticate on that provider’s site before connecting the account to HBO Max. The provider may control subscription or sign-in details, and HBO Max support says it cannot access provider sign-in information. See provider sign-in guidance.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
If a TV activation code fails, try the QR-code option, another browser, a private window, or a different device, as outlined in the official signup and activation guidance. A provider account working on its own does not necessarily mean the HBO Max account connection has completed.
The site works, but a video will not play
First determine whether the problem affects one title or every title. Try another program and, if available, playback on another supported device. Then check:

- Whether your browser is current and supported.
- Whether an extension or ad blocker is interfering; test with extensions temporarily disabled.
- Whether third-party cookies are blocked.
- Whether a VPN or proxy is active. If you see an “Are you using a VPN?” message, disconnect the VPN or proxy, close and reopen the browser, and test on a normal home or mobile connection. A workplace or public network may route traffic through a proxy even if you did not enable one yourself. Do not use a VPN to bypass geographic restrictions. See HBO Max VPN troubleshooting.
- Whether the account or title is available where you are and on the device you are using.
A website playback problem is not necessarily an app or TV problem. If only a title is affected, confirm its availability rather than repeatedly resetting your browser. HBO Max’s troubleshooting categories cover separate issues such as general errors, buffering, VPN messages, and unavailable videos.

For the website setup described in HBO Max’s support guidance, playback at HBOMax.com is limited to 720p; the guide notes that displays above 720p may cause full-screen or clipping problems in some circumstances. This is a website-specific limitation, not a statement about every HBO Max app or TV device, and it may explain a display symptom that is not a broken monitor or graphics card.

Buffering, freezing, or poor quality
HBO Max lists 5 Mbps download speed as the minimum for HD streaming. Its cited guidance recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K on supported TV devices; that 4K figure is not a requirement for simply opening the website, and the website guidance cited above lists a 720p ceiling at HBOMax.com. A speed test can help, but stability and competing traffic matter too.
- Pause downloads, video calls, or other heavy network use and test again.
- Update the browser and computer, then test another browser or device.
- Restart the computer and network equipment if other devices or services also show connection trouble.
For a modem/router restart, turn off the computer, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect the modem, and wait about one minute for internet service. Reconnect the router, turn the computer back on, and test again. Exact equipment behavior can vary. The official buffering guidance recommends checking speed and reducing competing network activity. If speed remains below the HD minimum or other services are also unstable, contact your internet provider.
Common error symptoms and what to try
| Symptom | First checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Something went wrong” or a general error | Reload; restart the browser; test a private window and another supported browser. | Copy the exact message and code and contact support if it continues. |
| Repeated login loop | Check the account email, allow cookies, and clear HBO Max site data. | Try another browser or device; reset the password if needed. |
| “Are you using a VPN?” | Disconnect a VPN/proxy and test another network. | If no VPN is active, check for corporate or network routing and contact support. |
| Video unavailable | Try another title and device; check account and regional availability. | Use the official help center if the title should be available but still fails. |
| Buffering or freezing | Check speed and stability; reduce other network activity; restart the network equipment. | Ask your ISP about persistent low speed or instability. |
| Device setup problem | Update the browser or device and use an official app store for apps. | Test another supported device or consult the device setup guidance. |
| TV activation code fails | Try the QR code, another browser/device, or a private window. | Check the provider/account connection with the relevant support team. |
HBO Max’s error-message guidance asks users to provide the on-screen wording or code. Do not rely on a paraphrase when you contact support.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Escalate when the same failure persists in multiple supported browsers and on another device or network, or when the error points to account, provider, payment, or location access. Before contacting HBO Max support, note:
- The exact error text and code.
- Your browser and version, operating system, and computer/device.
- Whether private browsing or another browser worked.
- Whether another device or network worked.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, ad blocker, or privacy extension was active.
- Whether the problem affects one title, sign-in, or the whole site.
If the subscription is provider-billed, also contact that provider for billing or authentication issues. Repeatedly clearing cache is unlikely to resolve an account-side or provider-side problem.
Quick Recap
Fixes to avoid
- Do not assume every failure means HBO Max is down; test another browser, device, and network first.
- Do not repeatedly erase all browser data when clearing the service’s own site data is enough.
- Do not permanently disable security software or privacy protections just to stream.
- Do not download unofficial “HBO Max repair” utilities or apps. Use the official website, official app stores, and HBO Max support.
- Do not change subscription plans expecting it to repair a browser, cookie, VPN, or network problem.
