1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf HBO Max is not working on Apple TV, first check that your device is supported: HBO Max’s U.S. device page lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K running tvOS 16.4 or later. Then update the app and tvOS, test the network if playback is poor, sign out and restart Apple TV, and reinstall the app only if simpler fixes fail. The right next step depends on whether the app is missing, crashing, unable to sign in, buffering, or failing on just one title.
Identify what is failing
“HBO Max not working” can describe several different problems. Start with the symptom; it helps avoid changing network settings for an account problem or reinstalling the app when only one episode is affected.
- The app is missing from the App Store: check your Apple TV model, tvOS version, and regional availability.
- The app will not open, freezes, or crashes: update the app and tvOS, then restart Apple TV.
- The app opens but will not sign in: check the account and subscription, then refresh the sign-in session.
- Video spins, buffers, or drops in quality: test the network and compare other streaming apps.
- Video works but audio does not: isolate the television, receiver, soundbar, HomePod, or AirPlay audio path.
- Only one movie or episode fails: test another title and try the same title on another device.
- HBO Max works elsewhere but not on Apple TV: focus on the Apple TV app, its session, and tvOS.
The HBO Max app on an Apple TV device is separate from Apple’s Apple TV app and Apple TV+ service. A problem with one does not, by itself, show that the other is broken.
Check whether your Apple TV supports HBO Max
HBO Max’s U.S. supported-devices page lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K with tvOS 16.4 or later. It does not list Apple TV 2nd- or 3rd-generation models for the current native app. These requirements are specific to the cited U.S. support page; availability and requirements can differ by region. Check HBO Max’s supported devices.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
To check your model and software, open Settings > General > About and note the model and tvOS version. Menu wording can vary slightly between tvOS releases, so look for the About screen if the labels differ.
If the app is absent from the App Store on a supported model, check that the device is up to date and that HBO Max is available in your region before treating it as a damaged installation. On an Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation, reinstalling the current app is not the solution: use a different supported streaming device or another playback method instead.
Update HBO Max and tvOS
Update the app first, then check for a tvOS update. They are separate updates: updating HBO Max does not update Apple TV’s operating system, and updating tvOS does not necessarily install an app update.
- Open the App Store on Apple TV and search for HBO Max.
- Select Update if that option appears, then reopen the app. If the store shows Open, it is not offering an update at that moment; that alone does not prove that every app release is already available to your device.
- For tvOS, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- Install any available update and let Apple TV restart before testing HBO Max again.
HBO Max recommends checking app and Apple TV software updates in its Apple TV troubleshooting guidance. Updating a television, receiver, soundbar, or router is a separate process; do not assume an Apple TV update covers those devices. If you are using beta tvOS, a compatibility issue is possible, but the symptom alone cannot establish that as the cause.
Fix buffering and poor video quality
HBO Max’s guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum download speed for HD streaming and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K. These are service guidance figures, not guarantees: a connection can meet a speed target and still suffer from Wi-Fi interference, congestion, latency, or packet loss. See HBO Max’s troubleshooting guidance for its connection recommendations.
Try these checks in order:
- Run a speed test on a device connected to the same network as Apple TV. A test on a phone may not reflect the connection at the Apple TV’s location.
- If possible, connect Apple TV by Ethernet and test playback again.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return before testing.
- Temporarily move Apple TV closer to the Wi-Fi access point, or pause large downloads, cloud backups, and game updates.
- Play something in another streaming app on Apple TV, then try HBO Max on another device using the same account and network.
- If several streaming apps buffer on Apple TV, look first at the network, router, or internet connection.
- If only HBO Max fails on Apple TV while other apps work, an app issue, account session, service problem, or Apple TV-specific software issue becomes more plausible.
- If HBO Max works on another device on the same network, focus on the Apple TV installation or its software environment.
Refresh the sign-in session and restart Apple TV
Signing out and restarting refreshes the app session without deleting the app. In HBO Max, open the Settings icon, choose Sign Out, and confirm. Then restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart, reopen HBO Max, and sign in again. HBO Max recommends this sequence in its Apple TV troubleshooting instructions.
If Apple TV is unresponsive, Apple documents additional restart options: hold the remote’s TV button and the appropriate clickpad or menu button until the status light blinks rapidly, or unplug Apple TV, wait five seconds, and reconnect it. Use the on-screen restart option when the interface responds. See Apple’s Apple TV restart guide.
Resolve sign-in or activation problems
If the app opens normally but sign-in fails or repeats an activation-code prompt, verify the account before changing device settings. A subscription may be billed through Apple, a cable provider, a wireless carrier, or another third party, so confirm its status with the provider that bills you.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the same HBO Max account works on the service’s website or on a phone.
- Check that the subscription is active and identify which email address holds it.
- On Apple TV, sign out, restart, and sign in with that account.
- If activation uses a code, request a new code and complete activation promptly. Check that the browser or phone used for activation is signed into the account with the subscription.
- If the app remains in a sign-in loop after these checks, reinstall it using the steps below.
A password change can leave an old authorization session behind. Refreshing the session is a more sensible first step than creating another account, which can make it harder to find the subscription you already have.

Delete and reinstall HBO Max
Reinstallation is useful if the app crashes at launch, sticks on its splash screen, or keeps failing after updates, a restart, and sign-in refresh. It deletes the app’s data, so expect to sign in again. Apple distinguishes deleting an app from offloading it: deleting removes its data, while offloading preserves app data. See Apple’s app installation and deletion guide.
- On the Home Screen, highlight HBO Max.
- Press and hold the remote’s Touch surface or clickpad for about two seconds.
- Press Play/Pause, then choose Delete. Depending on the tvOS interface, Apple’s wording may appear as Delete App; confirm the deletion.
- Open the App Store, search for HBO Max, and select Install.
- Open the app and sign in again.
HBO Max’s Apple TV troubleshooting steps describe deleting the app and reinstalling it from the App Store. A full Apple TV factory reset is much more disruptive and is not a proportionate first response to an app-specific issue.
Isolate black-screen, audio, AirPlay, and 4K problems
If the picture is black, loading indefinitely, or playing without sound, test the parts of the playback chain separately before reinstalling repeatedly.

- For missing or intermittent sound, temporarily use the television’s built-in speakers instead of a receiver, soundbar, or HomePod.
- If you use AirPlay, test playback directly in the HBO Max app on Apple TV. AirPlay and native app playback are different paths.
- Try stereo output or another available audio format, then reconnect the receiver or soundbar and restart the audio equipment.
- If only 4K playback fails, check the connection speed and the HDMI, receiver, and display compatibility along the video path.
These are isolation tests, not guaranteed HBO Max-specific fixes. If another app has the same sound or picture issue through the same equipment, the audio or video chain is a more likely place to investigate than the HBO Max account.
When only one movie or episode will not play
Try another title in HBO Max, then try the affected title on a phone or computer using the same account. Note whether it fails at the same point, or only with a particular subtitle, audio track, or 4K setting. If other titles play and the same title fails elsewhere too, repeated Apple TV reinstalls are unlikely to be the most useful next step; the issue may be specific to that title or the service.
If your Apple TV is too old for the app
Apple TV 2nd- and 3rd-generation models are not listed for the current native HBO Max app on the cited U.S. device page. HBO Max lists alternatives such as AirPlay or SharePlay where available, Chromecast, HDMI from a computer or compatible device, and a supported streaming player. The practical option depends on your region, other devices, television, network, and desired picture and audio quality. Check HBO Max’s supported-device information before choosing a playback method.
Buying another player is unnecessary if an app update or sign-in refresh solves the problem. Consider replacement hardware only if your Apple TV is unsupported or has broader problems across multiple apps.

When to contact HBO Max or Apple
Contact HBO Max if the app fails on multiple devices, your account or subscription cannot be verified, or a repeatable error appears within HBO Max. Contact Apple if Apple TV itself is unresponsive or the same playback problem affects multiple apps and system functions. The troubleshooting sources here do not verify whether HBO Max is currently experiencing an outage, so check the service’s current support information rather than assuming a service-wide problem.
Before contacting support, record the exact error wording or code, where it occurs (launch, sign-in, or playback), Apple TV model, tvOS version, HBO Max app version if visible, whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whether other apps work, and whether the same title works on another device. HBO Max advises keeping the on-screen error message or code for support; see its troubleshooting guidance.
