Halo, a startup founded by former Harvard students AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, says its Halo X smart glasses will listen to conversations, turn them into searchable memories, retrieve information, and display real-time prompts. Ardayfio calls the concept “vibe thinking.”
That phrase is marketing language—not a scientific breakthrough or evidence that the glasses make people smarter. The more precise description is an always-available AI assistant and external memory system, with a serious privacy cost: the device was announced around continuous audio capture from conversations that may include people who have not consented.
What “vibe thinking” means
“Vibe thinking” is Caine Ardayfio’s term for using AI continuously during ordinary thought and conversation. It appears to extend the idea of “vibe coding”—letting AI handle or heavily augment part of a workflow—into memory, search, recall, social interaction, and reasoning.
Halo’s founders describe this as augmentation rather than replacement. In practice, the promise is closer to wearing an AI prompter that can remember what was said, answer questions, and suggest what to say next. It is not a recognized scientific discipline, and there is no established evidence that the product increases biological intelligence.

Ardayfio described Halo X as the “first real step towards vibe thinking,” while Nguyen said the glasses were intended to make users “super intelligent” when they put them on. Those are founder descriptions of the product’s ambition, not independently demonstrated results. Futurism’s coverage and TechCrunch’s report document the claims.
What Halo X was announced to do
According to the August 2025 announcement coverage, Halo X was designed to:
- Listen continuously to nearby speech.
- Record and transcribe conversations.
- Use conversation context to retrieve facts, names, reminders, and earlier statements.
- Display answers or prompts on a built-in lens display.
- Suggest possible responses during a conversation.
- Answer factual questions in real time.
- Provide what the founders called “infinite memory.”
The reported processing chain is microphone to smartphone to cloud AI, with the result sent back to the glasses’ display. The founders told TechCrunch that the system would use Google Gemini and Perplexity. These are reported design intentions and founder claims, not independently audited specifications.
Announced hardware
The initial Halo X model was reported to include a microphone and heads-up display, but no camera. It was also described as depending on a smartphone for connectivity and computing. Halo was reportedly working with an unnamed third-party manufacturer.

The glasses were offered for preorder at a reported $249 price in August 2025. That historical price does not establish the current price, availability, shipping status, subscription requirements, or final specifications. The available reporting also mentioned a possible future camera-equipped model; that should not be confused with the announced initial version.
The biggest difference from Meta’s smart glasses
Halo’s founders contrasted Halo X with Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. Meta’s product includes cameras, microphones, speakers, an assistant, and media features, while Halo X’s initial design was primarily audio-, transcription-, display-, and memory-focused.

A visible indicator does not make Meta’s glasses automatically privacy-safe. The meaningful distinction is visible disclosure versus the discreet, continuous listening behavior Halo presented as its core advantage. Current Meta models and features should be checked on Meta’s official smart-glasses page.

Why bystander privacy is the central problem
The privacy issue is not limited to the wearer’s own data. A microphone that is always listening can capture speech from friends, colleagues, customers, strangers, patients, students, and anyone else within range.

Halo’s Ardayfio reportedly said the original audio would be deleted after transcription. That is a company claim, not proof that the system has no persistent recording risk. It leaves important questions unanswered:
- Are transcripts retained, and for how long?
- Do temporary files, backups, metadata, or third-party processors retain copies?
- Are Gemini or Perplexity requests logged or used for model improvement?
- Can users search their entire conversational history?
- Who can access the account after a phone loss, hack, legal demand, or account takeover?
- Can users pause recording instantly, and is the pause state obvious?
- Can a nearby person see private prompts reflected in the lens?
These are separate stages of the data pipeline:
- Capture: what the microphone hears.
- Transcription: conversion of speech into text.
- Inference: AI-generated conclusions about the conversation or participants.
- Retrieval: later searching and recalling prior exchanges.
- Display: information shown to the wearer.
- Disclosure: whether other people know any of this is happening.
Electronic Frontier Foundation cybersecurity director Eva Galperin warned, in comments reported by TechCrunch, that normalizing discreet always-on recording could erode expectations of privacy and create difficult questions about storage and access.
Legal compliance is not solved by “get consent”
Recording law varies by jurisdiction, location, and circumstance. Some U.S. states require consent from all parties to a recorded conversation, while other situations may involve different rules. Halo’s founders reportedly placed responsibility for obtaining consent on the user.

A wearer would also need to consider workplace confidentiality, trade secrets, attorney-client discussions, medical and therapeutic appointments, financial conversations, school and campus rules, private businesses, restricted venues, and applicable federal or state privacy laws. Transcripts may also contain sensitive personal information and create breach or deletion obligations.

The I-XRAY background
Before Halo X, Nguyen and Ardayfio attracted attention with I-XRAY, a project that combined Meta Ray-Ban glasses with facial recognition and information retrieval. Demonstrations reportedly identified strangers and surfaced potentially sensitive personal information. The pair did not release the code, but the project drew criticism because people shown in demonstrations apparently lacked meaningful consent. TechCrunch covered the project and the privacy reaction.
I-XRAY was not Halo X. The initial Halo X design was reported to have no camera, and there is no basis here for saying it performs facial recognition. The earlier project is nevertheless relevant context when evaluating how the founders approach powerful, discreet wearable data collection.

- Memory assistance: retrieving a name, date, preference, or commitment could help someone remember information.
- Performance assistance: a real-time answer could help a person respond faster or appear more informed.
- Cognitive improvement: the much stronger claim that continuous assistance improves learning, reasoning, or intelligence.
The first two are plausible functions of an external memory and prompt system. They do not establish the third. A user who receives an answer has not necessarily learned the underlying material or developed the ability to evaluate it independently.
Futurism’s discussion placed the idea in the broader debate about cognitive offloading and research associating heavy AI reliance with reduced critical-thinking effort. That should not be turned into a claim that all AI use damages cognition. The practical risks are more specific: dependence, weaker recall practice, accepting confident hallucinations, and treating every conversation as data to be indexed.
Ordinary-use failure modes
- Wrong answers: the AI may display a false answer at exactly the moment the wearer trusts it.
- Transcription errors: names, accents, overlapping speech, noise, and technical terms can be misheard.
- Context failures: sarcasm, ambiguity, emotion, and interpersonal nuance are difficult for automated systems.
- Latency: a prompt may arrive after the useful moment has passed.
- Privacy leakage: a private reminder or answer may be visible through the lens to someone nearby.
- Connectivity dependence: phone, network, cloud-service, or battery failures can disable core functions.
- Security risk: a searchable transcript archive is an attractive target.
- Social distrust: people may avoid conversations with someone wearing apparently recording-capable glasses.
- Venue restrictions: employers, schools, medical offices, and businesses may ban them.
- Distraction: reading prompts while walking, driving, speaking, or operating machinery could be unsafe.
- Vendor risk: an early-stage startup could change its policies, discontinue service, or fail to support hardware.
What is known—and what is not

In particular, a preorder announcement is not evidence that Halo X reached ordinary customers. Nor does a promise to delete audio prove that transcripts, backups, metadata, or third-party logs are deleted.

- Look for a physical pause control and an unmistakable recording state.
- Read the retention, deletion, backup, AI-training, and third-party processor policies.
- Verify encryption claims and whether any certification is completed rather than planned.
- Check performance with noise, multiple speakers, accents, names, and non-English speech.
- Confirm battery life, phone dependence, offline behavior, prescription-lens support, and display readability.
- Review workplace, school, venue, and local recording rules.
- Calculate the complete cost, including subscriptions, cloud-AI usage, repairs, shipping, and refunds.
- Ask whether the device encourages learning and review—or simply supplies answers on demand.
Less seamless alternatives include a smartphone assistant, a transcription app, a conventional note-taking system, or display-first eyewear such as Even Realities. Developer-oriented users may also examine Brilliant Labs. These alternatives can still raise privacy issues, but they may be easier to see, pause, and keep out of sensitive conversations.
