There is no verified, consumer-ready Ring firmware replacement that makes the cameras fully local-only. The project behind this headline is a Fulu Foundation bounty, reported by Futurism on February 22, 2026, seeking a way to stop compatible Ring cameras from sending footage to Amazon and connect them to a local computer or server. That is a goal under development, not a confirmed release. Futurism’s report does not establish that the bounty has been paid or that a reliable modification is publicly available.
Ring does offer a limited official local-storage option, Ring Edge, but it still requires Ring hardware, an eligible subscription and linked Ring and Amazon accounts. Third-party smart-home integrations are not automatically local recording either. If your priority is footage that never goes to Ring, a camera designed for local recording is currently the clearer route.
What the Fulu Foundation project is trying to do
According to Futurism’s February 22, 2026 report, the Fulu Foundation is seeking a software modification that would keep compatible Ring camera footage from being sent to Amazon and let owners connect the cameras directly to a PC or server over Wi-Fi or a physical connection. The project is associated with the Fulu Foundation, founded by repair creator Louis Rossmann.

“Store footage locally” can mean several different things. A camera might save motion clips to a card while still contacting the cloud for sign-in, notifications or device management. A genuinely cloud-independent setup would need to keep recording and playback working locally, without requiring Ring’s servers or a Ring subscription, and make clear what information—if any—the camera still sends off the home network.

The reporting describes an intended modification, not proof that all of those goals have been met. There is no verified general-purpose public firmware release established by the available reporting. A bounty announcement, a demonstration on one device, a repeatable modification for a specific model and a safe, supported installation for ordinary owners are different milestones.
Why a local-only Ring modification is difficult
Ring cameras are built to work with Ring’s accounts and cloud services; the sources do not document a standard local RTSP or ONVIF interface on typical Ring cloud cameras. A modification may therefore need to contend with device authentication, proprietary video transport, firmware updates, hardware-specific drivers and the camera’s handling of motion events. Secure boot, signed firmware, encryption or anti-rollback measures could also complicate changes, although these should be treated as engineering challenges to investigate—not confirmed properties of every Ring model.
Even a working video stream would not necessarily preserve every feature. Motion detection, timestamps, audio, two-way talk, mobile alerts, remote viewing and continuous recording might rely on different parts of the system. Battery-powered models bring additional limits: Ring says its 24/7 Recording feature does not work on battery or solar-powered cameras. A fix for one model or hardware revision should not be assumed to work across the Ring range.
Ring’s official option: Ring Edge
Ring Edge is Ring’s supported way to store and process some video locally. It uses a compatible Ring Alarm Pro Base Station and microSD card, subject to camera and network compatibility. Ring’s documentation also requires a compatible Ring subscription and linked Ring and Amazon accounts. That makes Ring Edge a local-storage feature inside Ring’s ecosystem—not an independent, Amazon-free camera system.

- It is not a general-purpose NAS: Ring Edge is organized around Ring’s base station and app, rather than an open local recorder for any camera.
- Local does not necessarily mean portable: Ring says footage on the card can be encrypted; encrypted recordings may not be viewable by simply moving the card to another device.
- It does not cover every camera or setup: Eligible devices and network requirements apply, so check Ring’s current compatibility guidance before buying hardware.
- It conflicts with 24/7 Recording: Ring lists Ring Edge microSD storage as incompatible with its 24/7 Recording feature.
Moving video storage or some processing to a local base station does not prove that no other information leaves the home. Account and subscription services remain part of the arrangement, and Ring’s cited documentation does not promise that all metadata, diagnostics, authentication traffic or notifications stay local.
Ring subscriptions, retention and continuous recording
Ring says a subscription is required to review recorded video; without one, users can still view live video and respond to alerts as they happen. See Ring’s subscription overview for the distinction between live access and recorded-video features.
Ring’s cited U.S. storage documentation gives owners retention settings from one to 180 days. It lists default periods of 30 days for 4K devices and 60 days for 1080p and 2K devices, with the available period depending on plan and settings. Ring warns that recordings can be permanently lost when they are deleted, the selected period expires or a subscription lapses. These details are specific to the cited U.S. documentation and may vary by country or change; download important recordings before changing a plan. Ring’s storage-time guidance has the current settings information.
Ring’s optional 24/7 Recording is also not a local alternative. It requires an eligible continuously powered camera and the relevant subscription and add-on; Ring says those recordings are temporarily stored in the cloud for up to 14 days. It is unavailable for battery or solar-powered cameras and cannot be used at the same time as Ring Edge local microSD storage. Why a Scrypted or Home Assistant bridge is not the same thing
Community integrations and smart-home bridges can make Ring devices appear in dashboards or expose some events to other systems. That can be useful, but a local dashboard does not prove the camera itself is recording locally or has stopped contacting Ring. The integration may still depend on Ring’s cloud, account authentication, or subscription features, and community tools can break when a service changes.
Scrypted’s NVR can record supported camera feeds to local storage, but its support policy says official NVR support is for local RTSP cameras and specifically lists Ring among unsupported cloud-camera hardware. Scrypted may still be part of a broader smart-home setup, but it should not be bought on the assumption that it turns a Ring camera into a supported, cloud-free local camera.
In short, distinguish among local viewing in an app, local recording of a feed, and a camera that operates without its cloud service. They are not interchangeable claims.

- Exactly which camera models, hardware revisions and firmware versions are supported—and which are not.
- A reproducible installation process, a recovery or factory-reset path, and the risk of bricking the device.
- How the firmware is built and verified, who maintains it, and whether independent researchers have reviewed it.
- Whether recording and playback work without a Ring subscription, Ring account authentication or internet access.
- How the camera’s network traffic was checked, including video, thumbnails, metadata, diagnostics, update checks and live-view signaling.
- Whether recording, motion detection, timestamps, audio, two-way talk and notifications work locally, and which functions are lost.
- How footage is stored, encrypted, exported and backed up, plus what happens after a firmware update or factory reset.
- How secure remote access works if owners need to view footage away from home.
Until those points are documented and independently tested, do not install unofficial firmware on a camera you depend on for security. A locally stored clip is little help if the modification disables recording, cannot be recovered, or introduces a new vulnerability.

For a replacement, look for native RTSP or ONVIF support, local microSD or NAS recording, no mandatory cloud subscription, local motion detection, clear firmware-update controls and documented export options. Scrypted’s camera buyer’s guide discusses local-camera categories and warns against treating cloud cameras as equivalent. Check the exact model: a manufacturer’s product line can include both local-capable and cloud-dependent devices. For sensitive deployments, test that recording still works when internet access is disabled.

Ring has faced past scrutiny over employee access to customer video, law-enforcement requests and camera account takeovers. Historical reporting includes TechCrunch’s 2019 coverage of privacy concerns, CBS News’ 2020 report on employee access, and The Washington Post’s 2019 reporting on law-enforcement access and retention. Those reports are historical context; they do not establish that every current Ring account or camera has the same exposure.

Likewise, reported account takeovers are not the same as a firmware exploit. A stolen or reused password can expose an account without compromising the camera’s firmware. The Fulu project, as described in the reporting, is about changing how a device handles footage and cloud dependence—a different technical problem.

Security and legal cautions
Blocking a Ring camera at the router may stop some internet traffic, but it is not a substitute for verified local firmware. It could also prevent sign-in, live view, alerts, updates or recording from working. If testing network isolation, do it on a noncritical device and confirm what still functions before relying on it.
Unofficial firmware can remove security patches, invalidate support or warranty coverage, fail after an update, or be malicious. Continuous recording and audio can also raise privacy and legal issues. Rules vary by location and situation, including for homes, rentals, workplaces and neighboring properties; check local law before enabling continuous video or audio recording.
The practical verdict
The Fulu Foundation project matters because it challenges the cloud dependence built into Ring cameras, but the reported bounty is not yet a dependable alternative for ordinary owners. Ring Edge is the official, limited local-storage option; third-party bridges can add integrations without proving that footage never reaches Amazon. If avoiding Amazon is the requirement—not simply saving a copy nearby—a camera system built for local recording is the most straightforward choice today.
