Yes—many phone, tablet, console and PC games work with an external controller, but “controller support” is not one thing. A game may accept a gamepad natively, accept it only through Xbox Cloud Gaming or another streaming service, or recognize it imperfectly while leaving menus and touch gestures on-screen. Check the individual game, platform and play method before buying hardware.

What counts as an external controller?

An external controller is any physical gamepad used instead of touchscreen controls. Common examples include Xbox Wireless Controllers, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 pads, Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers, and Bluetooth or USB models from 8BitDo, GameSir, SteelSeries and Turtle Beach.

Telescopic controllers such as Backbone One, Razer Kishi, GameSir and Gamevice clamp around a phone or plug directly into its Lightning or USB-C port. They normally appear to the device as a standard gamepad, but the connector, operating system, controller mode and individual game still determine compatibility.

Arcade sticks, racing wheels, flight sticks, keyboards, mice and adaptive devices are a separate case. A game that supports a conventional gamepad may not support those specialty inputs.

Native, cloud and remote-play support are different

Native mobile support

The game is installed and rendered on the phone, tablet, Apple TV or computer. Its developer must implement gamepad input. Minecraft, Call of Duty: Mobile, Genshin Impact, Apple Arcade titles and Netflix Games are examples often associated with controller play, but support can differ by operating system, edition, controller model and game update.

Backbone’s compatibility listings name games such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Minecraft and Genshin Impact, but the manufacturer’s list is not a universal guarantee. Check the game’s current store listing and support documentation. A controller brand cannot add input support that the game does not provide.

Cloud gaming

The game runs on a remote server. Your controller input travels to the service while video and audio stream back to the device. Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna work this way. You need a supported client or browser, a compatible gamepad, a reliable network and any required subscription, ownership or regional access.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Remote play

The game runs on your own console or PC and is streamed to the phone or tablet. Steam Link, PlayStation Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play and Moonlight are examples. The host computer or console must be powered on or configured for remote access, and the host version of the game—not a mobile edition—must support the controller or Steam Input mapping.

The fastest way to check a game

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the game’s App Store product page.
  2. Look for Apple’s controller icon or controller-support indicator.
  3. Read the description, “What’s New” notes and the developer’s support page.
  4. Check whether support is listed separately for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or Apple Arcade.
  5. Confirm that the game and operating system are up to date.

Apple identifies the controller icon as the first-party indication of compatible games: Apple’s App Store controller guide. The icon is useful evidence, not a promise that every controller feature works.

Android

Android has no equally consistent, system-wide badge. Check the Google Play listing, then search the publisher’s support site for “controller,” “gamepad,” “Bluetooth controller” or “physical controls.” Look for phone-versus-tablet, Android-TV and connection-mode restrictions. User reviews can reveal a recent regression, but only the developer’s documentation is authoritative.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.

  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Streaming services

For streamed games, inspect the service’s device, controller and catalog requirements rather than the mobile storefront. Steam documents Steam Link at store.steampowered.com/remoteplay; PlayStation lists Remote Play requirements at playstation.com/remote-play; Xbox lists mobile cloud and remote-play requirements at xbox.com/xbox-on-mobile.

Native games: use a support scale, not a yes-or-no list

Game or category Support type What to verify
Minecraft Native mobile support is available on supported editions Current iPhone/iPad or Android listing, menus and controller model
Call of Duty: Mobile Native support can vary by controller and update Supported gamepads and whether matchmaking or prompts change
Genshin Impact Platform-specific Official mobile documentation; PC/console support does not prove mobile support
Apple Arcade games Title-specific native support Controller icon and the individual game page, including Apple TV or Mac differences
Netflix Games and other mobile titles Title-specific Publisher notes and current operating-system support

Use these labels when evaluating a game:

  • Full: gameplay, menus, analog controls and important functions work.
  • Playable: core gameplay works, but some menus or actions remain touch-dependent.
  • Limited: only particular models, platforms or input modes work.
  • Streaming only: the controller works through a cloud or remote-play client, not the downloaded mobile game.
  • No current support: the developer does not officially support controller input.

“Supports a controller” and “plays well with a controller” are different ratings. Check sticks and triggers, vibration, motion controls, touchpad or special buttons, remapping, button prompts and inventory or map navigation.

GeForce NOW Supported PC-storefront games Supported apps and browsers Game ownership, service tier and regional availability
Amazon Luna Supported Luna and linked-service catalogs Supported apps, browsers and devices Catalog and availability vary by region

Steam Link sends video and audio from the gaming PC and returns controller input to it. Steam lists support for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android phones, tablets and TV, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, macOS, Linux and selected VR devices at Steam Remote Play.

Pair and connect a controller

Xbox or PlayStation controller with an Apple device

  1. Turn on Bluetooth in Settings.
  2. Put the controller in pairing mode: hold the Xbox pairing button; hold Share + PlayStation on DualShock 4; or Create + PlayStation on DualSense until the light flashes.
  3. Select the controller under Bluetooth devices.
  4. Start a game that advertises controller support.
  5. Open the game’s controller settings, if available, to adjust layout, dead zones, vibration and remapping.

Apple’s pairing and customization guidance is at Apple’s controller setup guide.

Telescopic controller

  1. Match the controller’s Lightning, USB-C or Bluetooth connection to the phone.
  2. Remove a case if the plug cannot seat fully.
  3. Attach the phone evenly and make sure it is not pressing buttons.
  4. Install the maker’s app only when needed for firmware, calibration or remapping.
  5. Connect before launching the game; some titles detect a pad only at startup.

Backbone says its controller works with controller-enabled games and services, and that Backbone+ is not required for basic controller use. See Apple’s Backbone One product page.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Pairs but produces no input The game has no native support or detects pads only at launch Close the game, reconnect, relaunch and test a known-compatible title
Only some buttons work Partial implementation or wrong input mode Change XInput/DirectInput mode where available and remap in-game
Disconnects Low battery, interference or an incompletely seated plug Recharge, remove the case, reconnect and try wired input
Wrong button prompts Xbox and PlayStation layouts are being interpreted differently Change the game’s layout or use the controller mode it expects
Works on PC but not mobile Support is platform-specific Use a supported mobile edition or stream the PC version
Works in menus but not gameplay Incomplete controller implementation Check update notes and use touch for unsupported actions

A controller can provide movement and buttons while lacking rumble, motion, touchpad, adaptive triggers or menu navigation. Sony specifically warns that DualSense features vary across Remote Play devices. HoYoverse likewise documents controller support for PC and consoles while excluding mobile in its cited game guidance: HoYoverse support. Do not infer mobile support from a console or PC listing.

Choosing the right controller

Use case Best fit Trade-off
Portable iPhone or Android play Direct-connect Backbone One, Razer Kishi or GameSir Connector, case, camera-bump and phone-size restrictions
iPad, Apple TV, Android tablet or several devices Full-size Bluetooth controller More flexible, but requires pairing and is less portable
Xbox Cloud Gaming Xbox-layout controller Familiar prompts, but service and network still determine compatibility
PS5 Remote Play DualSense; DualShock 4 for supported setups Haptics and audio features may not carry to every client
Steam Link Broadly compatible XInput controller Mouse-heavy games may need custom Steam Input layouts
Budget or multiplatform use Model-specific GameSir or 8BitDo controller Input modes and compatibility vary by model

Backbone One is a straightforward phone upgrade, while an Xbox Wireless Controller is the safer full-size general-purpose choice. DualSense suits PS5 owners. GameSir and 8BitDo offer more model variety and customization, but verify the exact model’s mode and platform support. None of these products makes an unsupported native game compatible.

Buying and subscription considerations

  • Apple Arcade: Apple highlights many controller-compatible games, but support remains title-specific. Check each product page at Apple Arcade.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming: Useful for a catalog of cloud games, but it depends on service access, region, compatible hardware and a strong connection. See Xbox Game Pass.
  • Steam Link: Normally has no separate subscription; you need a Steam library and an available PC. The game may still require keyboard or mouse.
  • PlayStation Remote Play: Requires a PS4 or PS5 with Remote Play configured; it does not provide console games to someone without the console.

Recheck the store listing or developer documentation immediately before purchase. Game updates, operating-system releases, regional catalogs and controller firmware can change compatibility.
