Greek Letter Shortcuts: Type α, β, Δ, π, and Ω in Word, LaTeX, and More

There is no single shortcut that types Greek letters in every app. In Microsoft Word, use Alt+= for equation commands such as alpha, or type a Unicode hex code such as 03B1 and press Alt+X for α. For Greek-language text, switch to a Greek keyboard layout; for LaTeX, use its math commands. The right method depends on whether you are writing a formula, prose, or source code.

Quick choices: In Word equation mode, press Alt+=, type alpha, then press Space if needed. In Word regular text, type 03B1 and press Alt+X. If you are unsure what your app supports, use its symbol picker or paste the character: α.

Greek letters at a glance

The Unicode values below identify ordinary Greek letters. The Word commands are for Word’s equation/Math AutoCorrect system; the LaTeX column is for math mode. These command sets are not interchangeable.

For LaTeX, capitals that look like Latin letters are usually typed as ordinary capitals: A, B, E, Z, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, T, X, and Y. Distinctive capitals such as Γ, Δ, Θ, Λ, Ξ, Π, Σ, Φ, Ψ, and Ω have commands. Word’s uppercase commands are specific to Word’s equation system, not a universal LaTeX convention. Type Greek letters in Microsoft Word

For a formula: use equation mode

1. Press Alt+= to insert an equation.
2. Type a command such as alpha, Delta, or Omega.
3. Press Space if Word has not converted the command.

For example, enter Delta x inside the equation area to create Δx. Word supports UnicodeMath and LaTeX-style equation input; the available syntax depends on the selected equation format and command. This shortcut opens Word’s equation input—it is not a Windows-wide Greek-letter shortcut.

For ordinary text: use Unicode plus Alt+X

Type the four-digit hexadecimal code without the U+ prefix, then press Alt+X. Word converts the code into the character:

If the code touches other hexadecimal characters, select just the code before pressing Alt+X; otherwise Word may treat a longer string as the code. This is Word’s Unicode conversion, not the older decimal Alt-code system. See Microsoft’s character-code instructions.

Use the symbol picker

For a one-off character or a variant you do not know by code, choose Insert → Symbol → More Symbols and locate the letter. Dialog details and character availability vary with Word edition, operating system, and installed fonts.

Greek keyboard or individual symbols?

Switch to a Greek keyboard layout when you are writing Greek words or sentences. It maps physical keys to Greek letters; for example, the standard layout maps the A, S, D, F, G, and H positions to α, σ, δ, φ, γ, and η. A layout changes what those keys produce while active—it does not insert a single isolated symbol. For occasional notation in English, Word equation commands, Unicode conversion, or a symbol picker is usually more convenient. The Unicode CLDR Greek layout chart shows the mapping.

Greek commands in LaTeX

Use Greek commands inside math mode. For example:

$alpha + beta = gamma$

$Delta x$

$sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i$

$varphi, varepsilon, vartheta$

The standard lowercase command sequence is:

alpha beta gamma delta epsilon zeta eta theta
iota kappa lambda mu nu xi omicron pi rho
sigma tau upsilon phi chi psi omega

Distinctive uppercase commands include Gamma, Delta, Theta, Lambda, Xi, Pi, Sigma, Upsilon, Phi, Psi, and Omega. Outside math mode, commands may display as literal text or require an editor’s math delimiters.

Google Docs, Mac, Linux, and mobile

These programs do not share Word’s Alt+X behavior. Use their character picker or input settings instead:

• Google Docs: Choose Insert → Special characters, then search for “Greek” or a letter name. This is useful for occasional characters; exact interface details may change.
• macOS: Open Character Viewer and search for the letter by name. If you write Greek regularly, add a Greek input source in keyboard settings.
• Linux: Available options depend on the desktop environment. Use a Greek keyboard layout, the desktop character picker, or the application’s symbol tool.
• iPhone, iPad, and Android: Add a Greek keyboard for sustained Greek typing; for occasional notation, use the app’s symbol picker or paste the character.
• Chromebook: Use the available language/input settings or character tools for your ChromeOS version.

If you cannot find a picker or layout, paste a character from the reference line below. For web pages, you can also use HTML entities or numeric character references.

Variants: epsilon, theta, sigma, phi, and more

Several Greek letters have distinct mathematical forms. The command names and the rendered shapes can vary by application or font, so compare the characters themselves rather than assuming one shape is universal.

Microsoft lists Greek commands and variants in its Math AutoCorrect guide. Unicode’s Greek and Coptic chart gives character identities and code points. The Greek and Coptic block spans U+0370–U+03FF, but it includes more than today’s standard mathematical letters: it also contains variants, archaic characters, punctuation, numeral signs, and Coptic characters. Other Greek-related characters, including accented forms, can be elsewhere.

Greek letters that look like Latin letters

Some Greek capitals resemble Latin capitals so closely that their appearance is not a reliable way to identify them. For example, Greek Alpha Α (U+0391) is not Latin A A (U+0041); Greek Beta Β differs from Latin B; Greek Rho Ρ differs from Latin P; Greek Omicron Ο differs from Latin O; and Greek Chi Χ differs from Latin X. The lowercase Greek omicron ο and Latin o, or Greek rho ρ and Latin p, can also be confused. If the distinction matters in code, search, or a scientific document, check the Unicode character name or code point rather than its appearance.

Likewise, Greek small letter mu μ is U+03BC, while the micro sign µ is U+00B5. They often look alike but are separate Unicode characters and can behave differently in data, search, and software. Use the character that matches the meaning and convention required by your document; do not rely on visual resemblance.

HTML entities for Greek letters

In HTML source, named entities or numeric references can represent characters. These are web markup—not Word commands or LaTeX commands.

α   → α
β    → β
Γ   → Γ
Δ   → Δ
π      → π
Ω   → Ω
α    → α
α  → α

Troubleshooting

Alt+X does nothing

• Confirm you are in Word; other programs need not implement this conversion.
• Enter the hex digits without U+, select only those digits, and press Alt+X.
• If it still fails, use Insert → Symbol or paste the character. A shortcut or accessibility setting can also intercept keys.

alpha stays visible in Word

Make sure the cursor is inside an equation opened with Alt+=, then enter the command and press Space if needed. In another editor, the command may require math mode or a particular equation format.

The letter looks different from a textbook

A font or math renderer controls the glyph’s appearance, not the Unicode identity. This is especially noticeable with phi, epsilon, theta, kappa, and rho variants. Check the character and command, and try a font with Greek coverage if the symbol appears as a box. Unicode’s chart instructions explain that suitable fonts are needed to display characters correctly. Changing fonts changes rendering, not the underlying character.

I need the exact character, not a look-alike

Check its Unicode name and code point. This helps distinguish Greek characters from Latin look-alikes and the micro sign. For Word’s code conversion steps, see Microsoft’s Unicode instructions; for character names and chart details, consult the Unicode Names List.
