GPT-4o did become better at complex, multi-step work—but it was not transformed into a dedicated reasoning model. OpenAI’s March 27, 2025 update highlighted stronger instruction following, STEM problem solving, coding, collaboration, and communication. GPT-4o was later retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, so this is now a retrospective explanation. OpenAI said API access was unchanged by that retirement.
What GPT-4o originally changed
OpenAI introduced GPT-4o on May 13, 2024. The “o” stood for “omni,” reflecting its design for native multimodal interaction across text, audio, images, and video. Unlike a voice system built as a chain of separate speech-recognition, language, and speech-synthesis models, GPT-4o was trained to process multiple modalities more directly.
OpenAI reported audio-response latency as low as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds. Its launch material also said GPT-4o matched GPT-4 Turbo on English text and code while improving non-English text, vision, and audio understanding. Those were launch claims, not guarantees about every task or current model.
At launch, OpenAI described GPT-4o as twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo, 50% cheaper in the API, and available with five times higher rate limits. These figures were historical comparisons with GPT-4 Turbo and should not be treated as current 2026 pricing or limits. See OpenAI’s GPT-4o announcement for the original details.

What the March 2025 update improved
On March 27, 2025, OpenAI described an improved GPT-4o with better:
- Following of complex instructions
- STEM problem solving
- Coding and debugging assistance
- Collaborative and intuitive responses
- Creativity
- Communication clarity
OpenAI identified the API version associated with the update as the newest snapshot of chatgpt-4o-latest, with a dated API model planned later. A snapshot name is a model-version detail, not evidence that ChatGPT gained a separate, selectable “multi-step reasoning mode.”
The official announcement supports describing GPT-4o as better at complex instruction following and multistage problem solving. It does not establish a specific numerical improvement in reasoning, nor does it show that GPT-4o became equivalent to OpenAI’s later dedicated Thinking or Pro model categories.
What “multi-step reasoning” means in practice
For GPT-4o, multi-step reasoning is best understood as handling dependent stages of a task more reliably. Examples include:
Rank #2
- Turning a programming requirement into an implementation, identifying edge cases, writing tests, and revising code after a failure.
- Solving a math or science problem while preserving intermediate calculations.
- Creating a schedule from a fixed budget, deadlines, and conflicting priorities.
- Reading a chart or diagram, extracting values, calculating a result, and explaining uncertainty.
- Following a long list of constraints without silently dropping earlier instructions.
These tasks combine several abilities that are often confused:
- Instruction following: obeying multiple requirements.
- Multistep problem solving: using dependent intermediate steps to reach an answer.
- Reasoning-model behavior: deliberately allocating additional computation or thinking time to difficult problems.
- Tool-assisted work: using code execution, files, retrieval, or other tools to reduce errors.
GPT-4o’s 2025 update supports the first two descriptions. It should not automatically be classified as a dedicated reasoning model under the third.
Where GPT-4o was especially useful
GPT-4o’s distinctive advantage was the combination of speed and multimodality. Historically, it was a strong fit for voice conversations, image questions, multilingual interaction, coding assistance, visual analysis, and workflows combining several kinds of input.
Recommended Free Tools
A coding workflow
A useful evaluation prompt would ask GPT-4o to parse requirements, list edge cases, write an implementation, explain it, produce tests, and revise the code after receiving a failing test. This tests instruction retention and iterative problem solving; it does not prove autonomous reasoning.
A planning workflow
Give the model a fixed budget, several deadlines, conflicting priorities, and a request to state assumptions. A good response should preserve the constraints, identify conflicts, show calculations, distinguish assumptions from facts, and update the plan when a condition changes.
A multimodal workflow
Provide a chart, image, or diagram and ask GPT-4o to describe what is visible, extract relevant values, perform a calculation, explain the conclusion, and identify missing context. This better reflects GPT-4o’s identity than presenting it as merely a text-only reasoning upgrade.
Important limitations
Improved reasoning behavior did not eliminate errors. GPT-4o could still produce confident but incorrect intermediate steps, misread blurry or ambiguous images, generate faulty code, or lose constraints in long tasks.
For important work, ask it to state assumptions and show calculations, then verify the result independently. Run generated code in a controlled environment. Use current sources or tools when the question depends on changing information. Do not rely on model output alone for medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions.
GPT-4o versus dedicated reasoning models
The distinction matters. GPT-4o’s 2025 improvements made it more capable at coding, STEM tasks, instruction following, and collaborative problem solving. That does not mean it offered the same experience as later models designed for deeper, more deliberate reasoning.
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT documentation uses Instant, Thinking, and Pro categories. Thinking and Pro are positioned for more thorough reasoning and include thinking-effort controls where available. The relevant choice for a current ChatGPT user is therefore generally speed versus response depth—not GPT-4o versus another selectable ChatGPT model.

No. OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. Conversations and projects using retired models default to corresponding newer model equivalents, and GPTs using retired models are moved to the closest newer equivalents.

That does not guarantee that API availability, pricing, limits, or capabilities remain identical over time, so developers should check the current API documentation before migrating or purchasing access.
Best Value
Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers had temporary access to GPT-4o through Custom GPTs until April 3, 2026, after which it was fully retired across ChatGPT plans.
What about Voice and Images?
OpenAI said the retirement of the text GPT-4o model did not remove ChatGPT Voice or ChatGPT Images. Voice uses a different model from the retired text model, even though it has a similar underlying foundation according to OpenAI’s retirement documentation.
What should users choose now?
- Instant: best when speed and everyday assistance matter most.
- Thinking: better aligned with difficult, multistage tasks that benefit from deeper reasoning.
- Pro: intended for the most demanding reasoning workflows where available.
- API models: appropriate for developers who need application integration, automation, and programmatic control.
A ChatGPT subscription should not be purchased as a way to restore GPT-4o; it is no longer a normal ChatGPT model selection. Choose a current plan based on speed, reasoning depth, usage limits, collaboration features, or API integration.

GPT-4o’s real contribution was fast, native multimodal interaction. Its March 27, 2025 update also improved complex instruction following, coding, STEM problem solving, and collaborative responses. Calling it a dedicated reasoning model would overstate the evidence. GPT-4o is now principally relevant as a historical ChatGPT milestone and an API model whose current availability must be checked separately.
